  1. Yeah, I'm with you on the rotation. There's enough position players in the pipeline. Pitching, not as much.
  2. The biggest problem or concern I have right now is the rotation. Lopez, stud. No worries there. Ryan, if we're getting the pitcher we saw in the first of 2023, then he too is a stud. But after that... I like Paddack but I'm guessing he's going to be on an innings limit. I like Ober but not sure he's a guy that is going to pitch more than 150 innings. And Descalfini is a gigantic ?. Ideally, they somehow find a pitcher to slot in as a #2 or #3 and they can shift Descalfini into a long relief role, which IIRC, is what Seattle envisioned when they traded for him. With that said, the ideal scenario isn't the realistic one and I won't knock the front office if they go into the season with Lopez, Ryan, Ober, Paddack, and Descalfini. Finding a #2 starter on the trade market, when you have budgetary constraints and when most teams will want a prize prospect (Lee), isn't easy to do.
  3. Pham's one of those guys that seems to have big moments in the post-season. Could be a faulty presumption on my part, but I recall him coming up with some clutch hits and plays. The Twins need more of that next to Correa and Lewis.
  4. Remember that morning very well. Had the breaking news alert on my phone when I woke up. Had to stare at it for a minute or two because I didn't trust my eyes.
  5. I applaud what MAT and Solano brought to the table last season - but...admittedly, if that's what Falvey was talking about when he was commenting on reinvesting the savings from the Polanco trade - meh.
  6. Law of averages are going to kick in for Buxton eventually, right?
  7. What's the deal with Hicks? The production hasn't been there consistently, and that happens to young players that don't always pan out. But he seemed to wear out his welcome with the Yankees for reasons other than his lack of production at the plate. Are there attitude problems there?
  8. This. Not sure what kind of return people were expecting. 2 MLB pitchers and a top-100 prospect. Not too shabby. Ideally, Descalfani can give them similar production to what they got from Maeda last year and it allows them to shift Varland to a high-level bullpen role - I think he'd do very well in that spot. As for Topa, health is the big thing but he was good for Seattle last season and got better down the stretch.
  9. So, Falvey had some comments about reallocating the money that they saved by trading Polanco. I don't necessarily but a lot of stock into what he says because he has been very good at saying a ton of words but at the same time, saying nothing at all. To go along with your post though, yeah, they might be able to pull off a surprise. Wouldn't sleep on a Boras client signing a deal similar to what Correa signed in 2022. We shall see soon enough.
  10. Cardinals contend in the NL Central. Maybe last year was an outlier? Just seems like a weird waste of resources to sign two guys that would be best served eating innings on a bad team - unless that's the kind of club the Cardinals have in 2024...
  11. This. And while I wouldn't use 'dynamic' to describe Farmer and Solano, they too were multi-positional role players and while far from perfect, they were productive and always ready to play.
  12. A few years back, before the front office got more imaginative and aggressive, I was under the impression that either Falvey or Levine had a direct line to guys like Olney and Heyman because we'd always hear, after the fact, that the Twins were the 'mystery team' bidding for a high-priced free agent like Darvish or Harper. This reminds me very much of that. There's zero chance of the Twins pursuing Ohtani and there's even less of a chance of Ohtani's camp entertaining what the Twins could offer.
  13. The idea of Soto is pretty intriguing but I think the Padres can get a better haul of prospects - especially from a big market team that has intentions of keeping him long-term. For the Twins, he'd be a rental and that would definitely limit what they were willing to give up.
  14. I think the headline reads far worse than the actual reality of the situation. The Twins were never going to bring in a high-priced free agent pitcher to replace Gray. Would've been nice, but it was a pipe dream. I think the Twins are more likely to try and leverage top prospects for a starting pitcher making less than Gray and one that is under team control for 2+ seasons. I have no idea what pitchers fall into that category or what the market for those pitchers will be but the Twins have done it before and they'll likely do it again. Loved Farmer's leadership but there isn't a better leader in baseball than Carlos Correa and if the Twins are looking to free up some $$$, Farmer's gone. That was probably the case regardless of the recent payroll news.
  15. Don't like the idea but wouldn't be shocked if the Twins re-signed Mahle similar to the way they did with Paddack and Pineda. Maybe a 2 year deal (2024 and 2025) with a club option for 2026. Let Varland start in the rotation and see if Mahle can come back in July or August.
  16. What's the largest contract the Twins have given to a free agent pitcher? Is it still Ervin Santana at $40MM / 4 years? Market's obviously changed a lot and I don't know how that contract would translate to the current market. But I would be absolutely shocked if the Twins are even in on any one of these pitchers. Would absolutely love #2 or #3 though.
  17. Lopez is the clear-cut #1. I think Paddack, Ryan and Ober all have the ceiling of a #3 starter. I don't see a legit #2. I also don't see the Twins paying that kind of pitcher in free agency so the trade market seems more likely but I have no idea what the market will be set at and the Twins may have to up the ante beyond position players.
  18. What could... Jorge Polanco Trevor Larnach Austin Martin Fetch back in a trade for a starting pitcher....
  19. Is Severino still considered a 'prospect' at this point? He's 24 but only has a handful of AB's at AAA. Wondering if there's still some upside...
  20. Good question, and I don't necessarily know the answer but I would think the starting point is a team being conscious of cost and wanting to keep payroll down.
  21. How much do you follow the NBA? Reason I ask is because tampering is basically an accepted norm now. Free agency opens on July 1st at 6:00 PM EST and deals are being announced at 6:01 PM. You also have players under contract forcing their way to preferred destinations - that's not by accident. I do think it is less frequent in the NFL and Brady was an outlier. But, in the NBA - it's rampant...
  22. This. Would be reluctant to trade him because it all-but guarantees a revolving door at catcher for the foreseeable future. How the organization looks at Jeffers - i.e., the post-season starts over Vazquez - make it pretty certain that he isn't going anywhere.
  23. Great news. Still really high on AK. I think he has the potential to be an all-star caliber 1B - if he can stay healthy.
  24. Would the Twins be tempted to trade Festa for an established MLB starting pitcher with multiple years of control? Would Festa alone be enough to get that kind of trade done, or would the Twins need to add position players? A lot depends on what the trade market looks like - with the free agent class not being great and with the Twins unlikely to dip their toe into that end of the pool, trading for a pitcher always seems like their preferred path. Additionally, a lot will depend on how Ryan, Ober and Varland are viewed internally - are they seen as future core pieces of the rotation or are they seen as guys with limited ceilings, i.e., 4/5 starters.
