  1. A strong playoff team has the good fortune of having players playing at their peak at the same time See the difference between the Cubs last year and this
  2. A starting pitcher that has a floor of being a third starter, a couple of relief pitchers and you would have a contender much like there was a decade ago here. Without obtaining some pitching the Twins could hang as contenders if the team hits efficiently as it has been.
  3. Makes sense as Wilk would be of no use for a few days, wimmers as the 26th player was used for the first game. There will be a few fresher arms for the evening go around, when it resumes. 4 innings in they got what they needed out of Mejia
  4. To sign? How about not yet drafted. Say a David Cabrerra, tanner Burns, Bryce Bonnin, Jake Elder, Chris McMahon. Plenty of names out there if you look. Of course, some things are behind pay walls. Sometimes there is not information for the cheap
  5. I am not a scout. I can't tell you. Teams hire people to know this. When you get bored at work go look through past drafts and you will find high school players that were drafted and not signed who were later drafted and put up solid to great numbers. It exists as a possibility,. It would be as likely to produce a major league player as any other options in the later rounds..
  6. They also have the funds to buy pitching, the Twins do not have that. 61 million this year for Lester, Lackey, Arrietta and Wade. The Twins could never do something similar. Trading to acquire young pitching is also difficult to do
  7. I stand on the side of amass all the talent you can. The counter to your ss question I would ask, isn't starting pitching the most important for the playoffs?
  8. What falls and you use the money on is a high school player to bypass college. It could be a guy like a 5th round pick Nix a few years ago. It could be you find one of the high school players like Springer was drafted by the Twins and make an all out effort to get them to sign
  9. I think if you jump to conclusions based on the three picks it is not that the Twins have a problem. Judgments based of an incomplete picture is destructive. When the draft is over and players are signed, then whine away. Extra cash still can be spent in later rounds than round 2. Any late round draft pick can be enticed to sign There could be several drafted, all it takes is one. As Thyrlos pointed out inadvertently with all of the late selections of Minnesota players, none of them panned out. What harm is there having a couple million in signing money to entice a high school player or two. One has to be patient and see what is drafted.
  10. There was not a pitcher in the draft that was going to help out next two years team in the draft unless they were trade bait.
  11. Yesterday the score was already 10-3 in Seattle's favor in the seventh. On the game the day before Molitor stated something about Belisle with 19 out of 26 games without allowing a run. I have yet to see anything logical posted on why when Belisle is bad, it gets really bad in a hurry. I really do not expect anyone here to have the answer.to the conundrum that is Belisle's pitching this year.
  12. Santana Santiago Hughes Gibson One of May, Mejia, Berrios, or Duffey Not an ideal 9 man group. Take one out to patch a hole in the bullpen May goes down you have Mejia, Hughes goes down, Berrios is more than ready. Santiago goes down and ? starts. The rotation needs to have a backup plan for every starter Management failed
  13. What did you think was going to be available? A pitcher with a bright future, 98 mph fastball, a wicked slider on the waiver wire that made the mistake of farting in the elevator ?
  14. You forgot BJ Garbe, Kyle Skipworth, Matt Hobgood and Kaleb Cowart. Gatorade player of the year means mlb bust as many times as it means star
  15. To draft a top 15 talent with a pick in the mid to late 30 range a talent has to fall there. That player would likely need to be a high school player. That player would also have to believe that in a couple of years they would not be a top 5 talent and be earning a lot more money. The extra money might be useful in the later rounds when drafting a high school player to pay them mid round money. There is no certainty who will be there other than at the first pick.
  16. I think that regardless of who they pick there will be someone out there stating how much better the front office could have done with the pick. There were quite a few people voice an opinion on Carlos Correa being picked over Buxton. The last few years those voices were silenced. 3 years from now, who knows. http://www.baseball-reference.com/draft/?year_ID=2012&draft_round=1&draft_type=junreg&query_type=year_round give it a look. 5 years out. Of the top players drafted. it is the high school position players are having an impact. The 2 college players doing well are Stroman, Gausman and Wacha All college pitchers. No hs pitchers, yet.
  17. Cordy is a power pitcher with control issues. Rarely starts, mostly relieves. As a 40th round pick he is high on potential, as he is making it through 2 seasons of ball and continued promotions. Does he need to be reminded at least he is not dead after a bad outing? I would hope that sports are not that all consuming. Perhaps society in their games are going back to win or literally die.
  18. The belief by management that their coaches and training systems can make Haley a better and more consistent pitcher. The belief they really do not want their power pitching prospects to be long relievers.
  19. I heard from an inside source that he does not have good control of his off speed pitches
  20. A pitcher is an Ace number 2, or number 3 is as pointless of debate as there is. Recent teams with great starters won what? Cody's list of Aces has how many rings between them for all of their seasons? Detroit, Tampa, the Mets, the Nationals have won how many with their Aces and Twos? Felix Hernandez has pitched how many times in the playoffs? Aces give you wonderful regular seasons. When the playoffs hit something happens. Players rising to the occasion. Many here on this site grouse about the Twins not winning but one series when they had their run under Gardenhire. Players that can rise to the occasion. Morris did in 91. Would not have had the chance without Puckett rising to the occasion. A Twin's batter carrying the team during the playoffs during Gardenhire's tenure? Not that I can recall So, it really did not matter that Santana was an Ace, Radke a two. Did it matter Volquez,, Ventura, Guthrie or Duffy in 2015 would not be anyone's idea of an Ace, or a two. Maybe not even a three. Cueto an Ace? A two?. His half regular season play in KC made him a four, or five? ALDS his play was at a high level. Toronto rocked him. Ace, not Ace, Ace for the WS? Labels do not really matter.
  21. Nor is he Tonkin as a pitching prospect, but you did not say boo about that when Thrylos brought it up and I responded to it. If Tonkin was a top ten pitching prospect when he was drafted that was one heck of a slide in the draft. So just find it in your heart to forgive my ignorance in making fun of Thrylos's statement
  22. . No, Florimomon is a Dominican. The point was Greene's floor not ceiling. If he busts as a pitcher his comp could be Tonkin, If he busts as a pitcher and then tries SS, his comp as a busted shortstop could be Florimon.. If you bothered to read Thtylos's comment you might understand mine
  23. Or becomes a shortstop like Pedro Florimon
  24. Back to the pitching topic. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/are-relievers-benefiting-from-pitching-less/ Older article, but really the question should be what 2 pitchers.
  25. Palka would have to continue his current plate discipline to have a shot.
