  1. Carl Pohlad made his money from Pepsi (almost none from me), commercial real estate and speculation with United land company and from working with Irwin Jacobs buying then breaking apart companies more so with the banks.
  2. One year contracts for free agents. They will get paid what they are worth every year that they play. If you want to start free agency after the current arbitration system starts, great. To balance out the "team investment" argument give the current team right to match the contract offered to the free agent
  3. Forgot to add Dave Engle, All Star catcher.
  4. There should be a special wing for Ron Davis, Denny Hocking and Terry Felton
  5. Name 1 baseball team that turned over most of their organization in 2-3 years with a change of leadership
  6. The creator of KATOH has said that it is a far from perfect tool, probably more useful in identifying overlooked prospects. In determining value of prospects in a trade it might be useful for the throw ins, but not the main pieces of a trade.
  7. There is no shortage of players that people think should not be on the roster
  8. If it was not Haley on the roster it would have as likely to have been another relief pitcher on the roster. They carried 13 after Haley was gone. That they used the position players as they did is a reflection on using 13 pitchers for most of the season, not specifically Haley
  9. The closely guarded secret is how major league teams evaluate players. Teams do not have an analytics department for shirts and giggles. This is a multi million dollar gamble is for the Twins. A pitcher of a high ERA can be found. So there has to be something there worthwhile. It may well be the analytics department for pitching is a Ouija board on a waning moon. It would explain why he was signed now
  10. That you drafted a rule 5 player only means that you took up a spot on your 40 man roster until sometime in spring training. Nothing more. The team gets a look at a player that a few in the organization have seen and think there is a higher ceiling than shown. They have spring training to find out. You can dump the guy back on the other system. If the other team wants the money more than the player, you can send the player down. This guy came from Miami. They probably are more than happy he was taken. It pays down the debt. Kinley will have to be able to be a serviceable pitcher at the major league level or he will be a minor league pitcher.
  11. The more exceptions to a statistic means the statistic is not measuring what the statistics guru says it does. The people here should not be bothering with advanced metrics
  12. In what universe is a pitcher that has pitched to a fip in the high 2s, low 3s a number 4 starter
  13. Any player that you sign in free agency is going to be in danger of declining. The question would be when. Other than the TJ, Lynn has been relatively healthy starting 30 or more games a year . Not so with Cobb. Cobb is more likely to decline quicker than Lynn. It is not like the farm system of the Twins is so deep that the team can trade for multiple top oe tear top of the rotation pitchers. You have to take a chance
  14. When looking at qualified pitchers over the last 6 seasons, Lynn and Cobb are in the top 50 for FIP. That is just too poor of pitcher to pitch for the Twins
  15. If the Angels, after the contract was signed, had buyers remorse and wanted to trade Ohtani straight up for Lewis ........ With the right deal no one is untouchable, The question should be does what you get back help you now and for how long. Trading Thorpe as an example, could bite you on any given day. That is only a problem if what you traded him for turns out to be the second coming of Ricky Nolasco rather than Robbie Ray
  16. By November 30 the Big Dog had scooped up the big catcher catch in the FA market. The sarcasto meter shows that Drew Butera had been already scooped up by mighty and powerful Royals
  17. your list of trades makes me think that Falvey and Levine did well for their trades
  18. The new front office has not been able to kiss a frog prospect and turn in into a prince charming major league player. They tried with Ynoa. They got a pitcher having a league average season and soon to be free agent. They got a pair of frogs backs. 10 million for Pettit, 3/38 for Chatwood, 2/15.5 for Mikolas. The early market indicates pitching is going to be expensive. That will drive up the price for cost controlled pitching. The front office has a hard task ahead of them. The fans should not expect the something for nothing. That is for the fairy tales
  19. They need to find pitchers who can effectively pitch. Not many starters have K rates greater than 9.5/9 Average is around 8. There are plenty of pitchers out there that strike batters out at a greater than 8 but less than 9.5 but get hammered the rest of the time. Ubaldo is one example. There are plenty of others. Fiers was better than average at strike outs. Houston let him go. Just something to keep in perspective
  20. The back issues need some resolution. Perhaps the new training staff will have better idea for treatment. His time as a starter was nothing special. Many a bad things happened more often than for a normal pitcher when the bat met the ball when he was starting. As a stikeout artist he was only slightly better than average. Maybe he learned something as a reliever, maybe not. Spring training will tell. .
  21. Everything is relevant in recruiting. Whatever one can use against another is fair game.
  22. There is always a first. San Diego has a habit of trying. They made it through last year Oakland could look at what the Padres did with their 3 rule 5 and consider if they are going to be bad for a year, try to find any talent. Same with the Reds. They could try to teach a big infielder to be a rf. It has been tried somewhere before
  23. In your opinion. On major league results Rodgers and Moya. On the others it is a big ole guess.
  24. hyperbole on what does not exist. NIishi would not be considered the man in Japan based off an outlier season. That being said, I wasn't in Japan to say either way.
