Pretty thin with a bunch of these guys, obviously. Alvarez & Speas seem to have decent potential on paper…..how does anyone with a .967 OPS at AAA get out of the A’s organization (any organization)? Speas “touches triple digits” so he can’t be dismissed but command is king so he needs a big shift! To me, Blewett has best shot with Twins or someone to be a real producer in a PEN. Really hope Keaschall can hit as billed. Need him as an alternative on right side of IF.

Not a huge sample size but the only MLB history he has…..Gasper played in 13 games in ‘24 and had 23 PA’s ……zero hits. Don’t think one can have anything but a grim view on Gasper’s potential. IMO, if Julien makes the 26 man it will be as a 2B/DH, period. Don’t see a RH hitting 1B as being in direct competition with Julien. You are probably right though that only one or possibly neither make Opening Day in the Show.

Never have been sold on the TD slant that after Ownership stated, “they wouldn’t lower payroll”, they wouldn’t/couldn’t spend any more than $130M. To me, that was all imagined by those either here or in the media. What’s the advantage of telling the public, all other 29 Teams, what your max. budget may be for a season. I don’t recall the FO announcing that they would set payroll spend at $154M in ‘23 - right? The premise from organization was $130M floor. If they end up at $147M, there sure can be debate on whether they are spending those $$ on the best roster possible! It seems they have somewhat stumbled into the roster they’ve ended up with to this point. Gotta say that if Team said they were going to keep the 3 guys that will be FA after ‘24 and they would add Bader/Coulombe/France a couple months ago it probably would have seemed like a cohesive plan and maybe more well accepted. I think the best use of payroll would be to trade a prospect arm with one of those 1 year contract vets (even Duran) for some real offense……seems doubtful at this point.

I get a kick out of the fact that people at TD think data is good for the player’s consumption, the position coaches consumption, the FO consumption & the fans as well. But Rocco having data (a guy who averaged 3.0 WAR & .290 BA & .775 OPS over his first 3 seasons) is a bad thing as he’s clueless regarding hitting and most things baseball related.

I agree that Ober has as good a chance as anyone on the Roster. ……….. post is about 1st time All-stars ……..Lopez has been an All-star once already.

Completely agree that optimism isn’t ever a real thing at TD! I think the thing you point out that is true for probably 27 of 30 teams is that they can’t handle much in the way of key player injury and still be expected to be highly competitive……..everyone has potential issues. That said, lumping Castro into an All-star headline is real on paper only, IMO. He’s very flexible defensively but barely an average offensive player. He is also very durable ……,. more like our # 8 or #10 guy of 13 though. Skepticism is there with Lee for me, not so much with Lewis.

I agree - none of the FA signings alone are terrible. The fact that this is starting to appear to be the cumulative effort for the off-season is a bummer. …… It appears that my hope of trading real pieces for a Tristan Casas at 1B/DH is now an impossibility or at least even more highly improbable!

As you point out, there’s no crystal ball on players future performances. I gotta say that I agree on past FA signings being a mix of success and failure. Real problem with France signing is the decision to DFA Headrick & losing him when making 40 man roster space. IMO, Headrick is a lot more valuable than Camargo or Gasper - right? Headrick is now a Yankee and that seems like an opportunity lost!

If Martin was competent at the plate and in the OF, Harrison Bader wouldn’t have received any consideration from FO. If Kiersey was the defensive gem some seem to think he is, despite analytics, Bader wouldn’t have gotten any consideration…….. If Lee/Julien hit the ball in Spring Training they will be on the 26 man and France & Ford have nothing to do with that decision. I too was/am hoping for a trade or two to improve the offensive potential. Not a fan of either “new option” at 1B! Not in love with Bader either. However, acting like young guys should just get playing time or roster spots because we’re all pulling for them to succeed is ridiculous. Earn a spot with performance!!! There’s no skin in the game with the contracts of Ford & France…….they’ll get cut loose in a heartbeat IF the young guys can perform ……..Miranda is supposedly a reverse splits guy, so welcoming 2 LH hitting 1B is really disrespectful to him &/or motivational.

He’s #2 prospect in Baseball. He’s 19, I think? For him to not at least get to the Show, his leverage seems to be at a low point for him. Organization may want to try it but I don’t see enough $$ until he has a touch of success.

Potentially extend one of the two pitchers - for me, preferably Ober. Ryan has yet to finish a season strong. Extending him now seems more risky than smart. 3 straight years of “fade”. Lewis obviously has to put together at least 5 months in a season before any serious thought is put into extending him. Jeffers is a “guy” at this point. His first couple months of ‘24 were very positive at the plate. He was choking up with two strikes and his contact skills with 2 strikes were solid! This success came to a crashing end. Personally, I think he should choke up 100% of the time. He needs to barrel the ball consistently and he’s so strong, he hits the ball plenty hard/far - even when choking up. Needs consistency at plate to generate serious interest for a Team commitment. No interest in extending now.

How is it the FO’s fault when essentially the entire line-up shuts down for the last 6 weeks of the season in ‘24?

Nobody that’s playing well is ever, ever blocked……hit the ball, force your way to the Show. It’s not, come on up & give it a shot, we’ve got our fingers crossed that you stick. AAA is a proving ground - dress rehearsal……perform and we have to play you at Target! That should be the message from the organization.
-
Completely agree on Emma - no real reason to doubt him but the “MLB ready tag” for whenever convenient in ‘25 is a probable fantasy. Keaschall - he’ll need some time but I’m more hopeful his bat will play by mid-season at least in St Paul…….2B or 1B savior at some point in ‘25 - fingers crossed! Has the organization ever promoted or even suggested playing Larnach at 1B? I don’t get the thought process, randomly, from the fan base? …….not really worried about Castro and his fit with the Team ……. if traded, OK. If he’s still with the club he’s probably playing most of the time at 2B, assuming health on the left side of infield. He’s not the answer at 1B & I’ll be surprised if he sees an inning there.
-
Gasper - Rule 5 pitcher acquired - Camargo ……..all guys clogging the 40-man IMO. A potential move for a real 1B would be Castro (1yr control) and Matthews (5yr control) and Tonkin for PEN depth to Boston for Casas. I don’t see the demand for Castro with Bader/Martin/Keaschall/Miranda/Julien/Lee …….a group that can cover Castro’s flexibility over the course of the season.
-
My feeling was Grichuk for offense v. LH pitching 100% (25% of games) ……….DH maybe 20% of the games…….PH 30 games (18% of games) ……..OF start v. RH pitching for rest or historical match-up advantage (15% of games) - he plays 75% of games for $5-$6M. Kiersey as the CF back-up defender. Castro at 2B & Martin as 5th OF ………either Julien or Lee starting year in AAA to get their bat right! Bader flips some of that around ….. Kiersey seems to have no shot w/o injury……that’s OK, he’s a depth guy. I just liked Grichuk’s bat so much better than Bader’s!!!
-
At this point, unless Lee or Julien are sizzling at the plate in Spring Training, I see Castro as the nearly everyday guy at 2B (70%) until somebody displaces him with their offense. Keaschall & Lee both at AAA to start the season is very possible. Julien really needs to show something to be on roster!

Marlins probably aren’t a real trade partner. Paddack is potentially solid for 85-100 innings in a season at this point. Am hoping he gets half dozen starts (1 per month) and works from the PEN a couple innings at a time a couple outings per week. His stuff plays well if only seen once in an outing by the opposition & he can work at more of a max effort in short stints of 25-35 pitches.

Steer is a fixture in Cincinnati. 156 games & 158 games last 2 seasons. Team voted him MVP after Rookie campaign in ‘23. 58 XBH in ‘24 and played 4 different positions. Pasquantino missed 4 weeks with a wrist/hand injury in ‘24. He had 97 RBI in the middle of the Royal’s line-up. Trading him at all will not happen. Trading him to a Division rival certainly will not happen. For any media platform to suggest he would be traded seems like a huge stretch.
