  1. When Morneau states out loud during a broadcast, “……..how did we get this guy?…….he looks great…..” that’s validation enough for me on Blewett. I thought he would have Tonkin’s spot in ‘25 before they signed Tonkin in the off season. Surprised he’s still in the system and not in the Opening Day mix for the PEN
  2. Sands: WHIP, excellent - ERA, very good & 10.7 K’s/9 ……….pitched in numerous situations from 5th innings through 8th inning ……maybe has 2 bad outings all year………I too, don’t know what else he may need to do to get respect?
  3. Pretty common knowledge that Paddack doesn’t have the arm durability/stamina to start throughout the season. One could argue that anything over 100 innings (with effectiveness) is a stretch. Paddack as a monthly spot starter and a 1 inning plus reliever a couple times per week, this is IMO, his best role. Can pitch with max effort & best stuff in limited innings. Varland - Paddack - Coulombe - Alcala - Sands - Jax - Duran are my top 7 PEN guys. Topa-Stewart - Tonkin - Castellano - Funderburk are all guys trying to fill the last spot, depending upon health & effectiveness. Tonkin & Paddack are both potential trade guys as other teams lose options in Spring Training.
  4. Tonkin & a single A guy to Phillies for Castellano? Phillies get a veteran at $1M and a youthful flyer……….Twins need some roster flexibility if they like Castellano - can’t be locked in by the Rule 5 considerations.
  5. I’m sure everyone here is shocked that Matt is hurt!! His career seems to be down indefinitely. Too bad but typical.
  6. Keaschall & Lewis cover the right side, agreed. Not sure who fits at 2B & 1B at this point. Those 4 guys seem to create best offense with decent defense.
  7. IMO, regarding Julien, is that it’s unlikely the opposing team has “the book on you” when you intermittently take fastballs for strikes. Often, more often than anyone else in MLB, on strike 3! There’s no great strategy from the pitcher it’s just Julien’s lack of mental alertness/psyche to be able to pull the trigger and swing and make contact. He needs a sports psychologist IMO.
  8. Not many Billionaires have a such a farcical view of value of money to be willing to lose, potentially, hundreds of millions on any investment. Extremely doubtful more than a couple tens of millions in losses once in a great while….not sure what (how many) people at TD think either of these is realistic or worth dreaming about, The Pohlad’s burned cash year in & year out? I think that’s a point you are making but not totally sure? I agree, one doesn’t become a billionaire spending on things that don’t ultimately generate profits…….no matter how big of fans they might be.
  9. They spent money on Durant - Beal - etc. and paid Devin Booker ………FO builds the Team, owners approve spending/budget. I would have liked the possibilities!
  10. IMO, Varland - Paddack are very good options for 1-2 inning stints as needed. These two, at max effort can get guys out, particularly if they aren’t facing anyone twice! Also, available for the 3 inning spot start every 5-6 weeks. Topa & Coulombe seem to be key pieces. Alcala - Sands - Jax - Duran Stewart starts season on IL. Tonkin is insurance - he’s traded late in Spring Training if no insurance is needed. They have Blewett at AAA for this type of depth. Castellano is a detail - don’t see a guy that hasn’t been past AA clogging a roster spot for 6 months. If they like him they change the Rule 5 designation & make a trade……he then has options. If they don’t like him he goes back to Philly.
  11. Alcala should be considered 4th/5th guy in the PEN. Agreed! Talented, agreed! Looking forward to a solid ‘25. Castellano is a non-issue relative to roster spot. They’ll trade a prospect for him if he’s deemed effective and then the roster spot is freed up. If not, they give him back to Philly. A guy that’s only been to AA isn’t going to clog a roster spot for 6 months! The “poor Jorge” comments got to be challenged though. He pitched 58.1 innings in 54 outings. I’m no math wizard but that’s tough to do if you have “multiple 2-3 inning outings”. Rocco didn’t create the Texas debacle of 4 runs on 9 pitches. He gave up a single - double - double - fly ball out - HR. Game tied on 9 pitches. The B.S. about Baldelli taking him out before all the damage is ridiculous. NOBODY is preparing to remove a guy immediately if he has been solid all year & has a 4-0 lead. Within his total of 19 total pitches he got 2 more outs but gave up a second HR as well. He entered that outing in mid-August with a 2.15 ERA. He had pretty good success to that point for being “so terribly misused”. Alcala got sent down earlier in the year to re-set and work on command. It worked! He got sent down in September because he appeared to be a head case and somewhat physically drained. A little fatigue on both fronts. Offense failed last 6 weeks - the PEN and player moves in the PEN had very little to do with missing playoffs.
  12. Also, he’s old and would want to WIN in the ownership game in Minnesota (show up A-Rod & Pohlad’s) & be a hero with Minnesotans. Not saying I want Taylor but seems he’d be short term motivated!
  13. That, or the worst Team - arguably organization, in baseball, has shares available at a pretty depressed price. Much bigger market. Makes current investment in Chicago make more sense. Business shifts & there’s always 2 sides. That said, Pohlad’s very well could have screwed this up.
  14. Are you inferring, somebody should be trying to add a better than average bat to the line-up? …….,I hope so
  15. Paddack should be targeted for max effort innings and about 16-18/month. Used couple times per week for 2 innings plus or minus a guy or two……..102 innings…….maybe one spot start per month (3 innings) to give the other 5 guys an extra day off once in a while. I think he could get his ERA down around 3.60 if he isn’t facing guys multiple times in an outing. His velocity will play better as well. He can’t physically hold up AND pitch well in the starting rotation over more than a month at a time.
  16. Completely agree on Paddack! Surely, a guy that has a probable maximum of 110 innings (Paddack) won’t be given a rotation spot. SWR had an ERA around 3.50 well into the season and he was around the 7th guy for rotation on March 1. Can’t imagine him not being a lock for the 4th spot …….. or 5th (semantics). Festa seems to have much more upside than Paddack as well. To me, Paddack at max effort 2-3 times per week for 1 1/3 - 2 innings ……. 4-5 innings per week out of the PEN & maybe a spot start once a month for 3 plus innings ……. this would bring great value to the club and allow him to shine with his best stuff when he’s in the game. Also, 18 innings per month gets him through a 6 month season with maybe one 2 week break on the IL?
  17. It’s a weak signing but even the Twins will DFA him to make room for a young guy that’s performing, as his salary is projected at $1M. To me, he’s insurance. Miranda gets hurt (40/60 chance) or Keaschall is “behind” or whatever……at least they have a guy out of the gate that has some experience and some upside. Gallo - Margot - Farmer were all making $5M - $11M ……..a little tougher for FO to give up on v. $1M!
  18. Completely agree. NOT what I was hoping for at 1B but hardly worth getting upset about. He will not block anyone! As YOU realize, there’s a big difference from an $11M contract (Gallo) or a $6.5M contract (Farmer) or $4-$5.5M contract (Margot) to a $1M contract that’s been offered to France IF he makes the Team. Miranda is a reverse splits guy that doesn’t seem physically durable. To me, he starts nearly all the time against RH pitching. France is a RH hitter off the bench that is available to PH, per recent history, v. lefties. He can start if Miranda gets hurt or needs rest and he can start 25% of the total games that are v. LH pitching. Again, to me, Julien isn’t in any conversation regarding 1B. If Eddie hits he’ll play 2B. He surely will have an opportunity to start there right away - IF he hits! Keaschall, if he hits, will play 2B or 1B……..he’s probably a June add to roster though, best case. Really don’t see France & certainly not his contract, blocking these guys. Surely, he won’t block an OF like Emma.
  19. Morris seems to have a nice opportunity if he can come close to maintaining that 1.08 WHIP in St. Paul!
  20. Camargo & Julien have a ways to go to excite anyone, IMO……….Kiersey, maybe? Keaschall & E-Rod could force their way in to roster by June - hope so!
  21. Pretty thin with a bunch of these guys, obviously. Alvarez & Speas seem to have decent potential on paper…..how does anyone with a .967 OPS at AAA get out of the A’s organization (any organization)? Speas “touches triple digits” so he can’t be dismissed but command is king so he needs a big shift! To me, Blewett has best shot with Twins or someone to be a real producer in a PEN. Really hope Keaschall can hit as billed. Need him as an alternative on right side of IF.
  22. Not a huge sample size but the only MLB history he has…..Gasper played in 13 games in ‘24 and had 23 PA’s ……zero hits. Don’t think one can have anything but a grim view on Gasper’s potential. IMO, if Julien makes the 26 man it will be as a 2B/DH, period. Don’t see a RH hitting 1B as being in direct competition with Julien. You are probably right though that only one or possibly neither make Opening Day in the Show.
  23. Never have been sold on the TD slant that after Ownership stated, “they wouldn’t lower payroll”, they wouldn’t/couldn’t spend any more than $130M. To me, that was all imagined by those either here or in the media. What’s the advantage of telling the public, all other 29 Teams, what your max. budget may be for a season. I don’t recall the FO announcing that they would set payroll spend at $154M in ‘23 - right? The premise from organization was $130M floor. If they end up at $147M, there sure can be debate on whether they are spending those $$ on the best roster possible! It seems they have somewhat stumbled into the roster they’ve ended up with to this point. Gotta say that if Team said they were going to keep the 3 guys that will be FA after ‘24 and they would add Bader/Coulombe/France a couple months ago it probably would have seemed like a cohesive plan and maybe more well accepted. I think the best use of payroll would be to trade a prospect arm with one of those 1 year contract vets (even Duran) for some real offense……seems doubtful at this point.
  24. I get a kick out of the fact that people at TD think data is good for the player’s consumption, the position coaches consumption, the FO consumption & the fans as well. But Rocco having data (a guy who averaged 3.0 WAR & .290 BA & .775 OPS over his first 3 seasons) is a bad thing as he’s clueless regarding hitting and most things baseball related.
