Where in what you are saying today is a rational take? “I think Baldelli should have been fired long ago……….”

OK roster stuff: Castro has started fine at 2B Larnach has started fine in LF Lopez gave up 2 earned runs & Ryan gave up 1 earned run Same two Catchers they’ve had for last two seasons …………….. Bad roster stuff: Wallner - Buxton - Correa - France - Miranda have approximately 5 hits between them through 4 games. Ober & Paddack have given up 17 earned runs through a combined 5 2/3 innings. Lewis & Lee are out - not helping at all. I agree that the everyday rostered guys leave something to be desired…………need another big bat to be competitive and to have enough depth to weather mini-slumps they’re experiencing. On paper, Lewis & Lee are the added depth…. or the FO could rationalize that they are the depth.

Do we really think Byron Buxton needs to be guided into performing by his Manager? Carlos Correa shows up at the Park & doesn’t know how to prepare himself to play a game without Rocco putting his arm around him or giving some motivational speech to the Team. These are professional athletes not 14 year olds. Is Paddack missing the plate with 5-6 straight sliders (when thrown) and then throwing absolute gut shots down the middle because his Manager didn’t get him mentally prepared. His velocity was 95-97mph in the 1st and 91mph in the 3rd. He isn’t talented enough physically nor between the ears to be in the rotation - that’s a front office issue! They were cruising and 17 games over .500 on August 16th last year………they started the year 7-13 ……. for 4 months they played 23 games over .500 in ‘24. Baldelli had absolutely nothing to do with any of that success but ALL the piss poor play by the players over the past 2 months of baseball are his fault. Doesn’t make a lot of sense.

When do the players have a share in, or take on, accountability? 2-34 for series top 3 guys in order 3 hits in game 2 for the Team It doesn’t matter what strategic slant anyone thinks Baldelli should have made, doesn’t change the results - Pitcher balked & then threw the ball away and gave up 2 unearned runs as a result in game 1. Game 2, scored 1 run. Game 3 scored 2 runs. Again, he’s not in the batter’s box. What moves by Baldelli, specifically, overcome the mediocrity at the plate?

Wallner 1 hit - Correa 0-series - Buxton 1 hit …… that’s the Problem! France 1 hit - Miranda 2 hits - Jeffers 1 hit - Vazquez 0 hits ……… that’s the problem! Crafty/command pitcher was sick but said he “was OK to go” …… looked terrible. I can criticize the Manager if he’s creating problems with his approach to strategy …… players gotta play well to win. Duran - Jax - Alcala all underperformed and nobody expects that to be the norm - Rocco’s not pitching nor hitting.

“Stacked” is a Huge stretch - agreed. To me, Wallner is a great #6 hitter. Julien being effective would help! Can’t have Top 3 go 2-34 and expect to compete. They needed to trade some pitching for a bat in the offseason (proven bat!) …… Duran & Morris (or like) for a hitter! They are at the mercy of Buxton’s hot/cold play ……. same with Wallner. Correa can’t go 0-series! I think the OF will hit eventually - 3 games in and 159 to get better results. 7-13 last year to start and 17 games over .500 by August 16th. Things will change & hopefully for the better.

His points of criticism of Baldelli are weak! The players play & they sucked!!! It doesn’t matter where Gasper or Castro bat in the bottom 40% of the line-up if the Top 3 in the line-up go 2-34………period. Can’t manage around that type of non-production. Ever heard of beware of the sick guy - obviously, Ober represented his condition as “OK to go”. He had poor command. It happens occasionally. The difference between 81 pitches for Ryan coming off an arm injury not being close enough to an “expected 90 pitches” is nuts!! If he threw 5-6 more pitches it would have been better usage of Ryan? ….. come on. If he started the 6th inning and gave up a double everyone would bitch that he should have been pulled since he’s coming off an injury……..OR, doesn’t Baldelli know enough to “start a reliever with a fresh inning,” instead of bringing him into a jam. Julien was sick Wednesday - Friday. Reported Saturday and lumped in with Ober’s illness. He was out Thursday and used late off the bench Saturday - what’s the issue? Don’t play Ober - play Julien………….maybe, maybe the Mgr. spoke to the guys and trainers and made informed decisions, maybe? Bullpen …….. Alcala - Jax - Duran weren’t effective ……… it’s not the Manager throwing late innings. The SCARE written about here regarding the starters innings in their first starts and the likelihood that the Pen will be gassed if it keeps up…….that’s about as Chicken Little as it gets. The Pen is at the start of the year and had a day off on Friday. Dobnack stepped up and the bullpen is fine and will be fine. They have 12-13 arms to use that have pitched for them at MLB level previously…….not concerned. Ignore 2 2/3 inning starts - no, that’s never good! It happens. Funderburk - Stewart - Blewett - Tonkin - Dobnack - ……… guy brought up today, Mcaughan?? as well. Pen’s stamina should be fine with average health.

Minnesota Twins Week in Review: St. Louis Blues
JD-TWINS replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
“Life” in a Club typically comes from run scoring & wins…….if they aren’t happening it’s pretty tough to fake it on this level. Correa was near embarrassing & Buxton as well. 2-34 in the Top 3 slots - tough to Manage your way around those numbers.- 31 replies

Is the new guy going to hit for .830 OPS? If not, won’t really help much. Team can still better last year’s start of 7-13 at this point………gotta score though.- 31 replies

Hitting side was overhauled on the Philosophy front. To me, Players play. Not adding a bat that’s competent (with all the supposed young pitching riches) in a trade is the issue to me. 2-34 from top 3 slots in line-up is hard to even imagine. My trade was Duran & young AAA starter to Red Sox for Casas at 1B. Not sure if he’s done anything positive either? As you say, there’s 159 to go but, things looked a lot like September ‘24 the past few days. 🤞- 31 replies

Minnesota Twins Week in Review: St. Louis Blues

Was reported Saturday that Julien had been sick for 3 days ……. worse than Ober. Agree, defense looks pretty weak. Correa looks rough on both sides of the game so far. I know you love Martin and want him to have a chance. Realistically, he’s about the 6th 2B option in the organization. He didn’t hit well enough this spring to deserve a shot anywhere on the 26 Man. Hopefully, he gets it going in St. Paul. Castro is comparable to what Martin would bring at 2B defensively. He had 3 doubles & a HR in the series. 2B wasn’t the issue. Julien was sick or he may have played. 3 RH starters so Martin probably doesn’t play either if rostered.- 31 replies

Cannot win scoring 2 runs per game……1,2,& 3 hitters were 2-34 in series. I could pitch for Twins and same result with this offense!- 31 replies

All Winter I had hoped for Duran + Morris or Adams in trade to Red Sox for Tristan Casas as our new 1B. “Could really use some offensive punch”! Could also move Matt Wallner to 5th-6th spot in the line-up where he belongs!! Other option is keep those guys and Royce Lewis or Keaschall take over 1B with Brooks Lee growing into 3B……….works too, right?
-
Not sure what happened to Pedro either ……. Pablo gave up 2 earned runs in 5 innings without great command. That’s not an outing to be concerned about. Ryan gave up 1 earned run through 5 innings in his first MLB start after arm injury - great result! Unless Zebby or Festa can HIT, they probably won’t be needed anytime soon. The OFFENSE has been pathetic through 18 innings. Top 3 in line-up maybe have 1 hit over roughly 24 AB’s…….. that needs to change this afternoon! Pitchers will give up runs - we gotta score!! I like that Matthews is throwing a little harder - he’s now above average - that’s a big deal. I’m not as impressed with his walk rate as others - low walk rate doesn’t necessarily = “pin point command” per what the writer above eludes to Zebby having. He throws the ball over the plate - that’s not pin point control. As he gains experience at higher levels he’ll get more refined. Sometimes it’s good to throw the ball just off the plate - “competitive” pitches out of the zone. Gotta mix it up with MLB hitters - can’t pound the zone 75-80% of the time. Both guys have nice upsides & looking forward to early success at AAA - I don’t see Lopez getting traded prior to the last year of his deal - 2.5 seasons from now.
-
That’s obvious…….they get way more leash if being paid. Capabilities and track record have to come into play though. A guy that hit .280 in AA shouldn’t displace a veteran that may come around ….. i.e. Carlos Santana last year - horrible start - pretty decent season. The lynch mob was calling for his head along with Vazquez & Margot, early in the season & sometimes well into the season. Gallo, as bad as he was at the plate gave them a guy that could play 1B & OF “well” and nobody else was a lock health wise through the second half of season. Buxton - Correa - Lewis all hurt & out big chunks in ‘23. Not liking a guy or ignoring things he does that help doesn’t rationalize bring guys up “to see what they can do”. What were Margot’s splits? What did he hit against LH pitching (the role he was supposed to have)…………take away the 0-35 or whatever he was as a PH and he’s not terrible. Hung on to the fantasy that he was going to “break through” as a PH waay too long - agreed! 4th or 5th outfielders going into a season aren’t ever great or seldom average players or they would be starting as a top 3 guy. IMO, Margot rose to the level of everyday due to injuries and serious lack of performance from others - guys sent down that were ahead of him on depth chart April 1.
-
Were the guys not hurt? None of the games missed by this half dozen guys is fiction. Wallner & Julien failed the team for quite a big chunk of the season. They didn’t intend on Wallner not being able to hit - Julien being able to hit for only a month - etc. - Correa being out for couple months. Lee - Correa - Lewis were all out months not days. Castro was the leading OF candidate to fill in with Larnach hurt & Wallner being in St. Paul for extended periods……..he was on the dirt by necessity. Who are these other effective options that were healthy & available last year? They certainly believed in his right handed bat as they relentlessly sent him to the plate in more than 30 games to Pinch Hit, (which sucked) even though they most often just got trumped by a RH reliever & Margot went 0 - all at bats.
-
Ryan’s health is a key concern………can Coulombe pitch anywhere near his last 2 years numbers…….can SWR pitch near the same level as 2024? As the article states, there are 26 question marks just like all other 30 teams in MLB. Some of the question marks just have to be assumed as small or non-issues. If the 3 guys I mentioned are OK the Team should be successful. Can group any 3 guys I guess, but to me, these are the real question marks and with low performances from them, it would really sting.

I just do not see any benefit in trading Paddack at the deadline. If he’s hurt or not pitching well the return is zero. If he’s healthy, the Twins can use him over the remainder of the season. If he’s healthy and Twins are out of the race, they have little leverage and get back some A ball flyer prospect. I don’t have a problem with him in the rotation in April. He has a maximum of maybe 110 effective innings, IMO. Let him start while things go well for 50-60 days and the young guys sharpen up in St. Paul. Then a “tired arm” IL break in June. He comes back in mid-July and throws a couple times a week out of the bullpen……maybe 4 innings. That’s 55 innings through May & another 40-45 innings out of the Pen in 2nd half………..maybe a couple 3-4 inning spot starts in August-September? He stays fresh and effective and is available late in the year for max effort help out of the Pen. A good value at $7M.
