The other side of this argument is that once a guy figures it out, it leads to sustained success for a number of years. 2025 is not an end it is a beginning.

Royce Lewis Is At A Crossroads. Which Path Will He Take?
Pat replied to Eric Blonigen's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Once you turn baseball into a head game, it will eat you up. -
I just find it fascinating that the most volatile portion of any MLB team is the bullpen. With the devolution of starting pitching driven by analytics, teams now have to depend on the most volatile part of their team for success. That doesn't seem to make a lot of sense.

I always enjoyed Gardy's post game press conferences. He was funny while making a serious point. Molitor's approach was quite cerebral and thought provoking. When I heard Baldelli, I often wondered if he had been watching the same game that I just watched, He didn't seem to have any emotional investment in what was happening.

The Twins Don’t Just Need Strategy. They Need Soul
Pat replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I am afraid they are just going to hire Rocco 2.0 because the front office is a slave to their approach. Are they going to hire a contrarian? Not likely. -
Selling "Hope" has always been the mantra of Twins management. Signing retreads and "hoping" to get one more good year out of them. Rarely worked. Hope is not a plan it is an illusion that might happen or not. No way to run an organization.

I think Genesis should change his name to Exodus mostly because that's what the ball does when he pitches,

The Pohlads May Still Be Planning to Sell the Twins
Pat replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The players will never except a salary cap. It's a pipe dream of the commissioner and the owners think it's going to happen. Considering the amount of money generated by MLB as a business, this idea by the owners is like cutting off your nose to spite your face. -

I agree with patience but at the same time we should look at the Twins history of #1 draft picks. One would hope that some of them would be high impact players. Lee, Larnach, Lewis at this point just serviceable at best. Buxton is finally producing consistently because he is healthy.

An Open Letter to MLB Fans: This Toxic Behavior Must Stop

Unfortunately, considering the the current political and social climate in our country, this type of behavior is not surprising. How sad. -
Week in Review: Returning to Rock Bottom
Pat replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It's interesting to see two similar organizations like the Brewers and the Twins who basically confront the same financial and fiscal problems and how differently they approach them in a style of play. The Brewers play a hustling, "put pressure on", play hard style to produce runs. The Twins just sit around and wait for a homer. It should be clear after this weekend which is the most viable alternative for a mid market team that wants to compete. It's no coincidence that Brewers always seem to be in the hunt.- 39 replies

One of the things that is often overlooked is warming up takes a toll as well. If reliever makes 75 one inning appearances, that is 75 times he has to warm up. If a reliever pitched two or thee innings twice a week, he would still get the same number of innings in half the appearances and warm up half as many times. There is no real reason beyond being conditioned/trained to throw only one inning that multiple innings could not be thrown. I was at a game where Stewart threw 7 pitches, retired the side, and didn't come out for the next inning. Enter Jax who used nine pitches to get three outs and he was done. Is this the best approach for 162 games and subsequent playoffs?

It's pretty clear that platooning is not going away. It's a whole roster of interchangeable parts except for a few players. Can you win this way? With the emphasis on bullpen games and the constant changing of pitchers, you need more players who can hit both handed pitching. If you don't, you condemn yourself to poor matchups on a consistent basis at various spots during the game. By not developing hitters, especially LH batters, you hamstring your offense and you are left with the debacle of Manny Margot because there really is no other option.

I remember how quick he was on pitches on the inner half of the plate. When he was hot that pitch was gone. I also remember the Twins offered him a long term deal and he turned it down resulting in his trade to the Dodgers. He would have made more money if he had accepted that offer. He appears to have expected to get a big deal in free agency which didn't happen.

It all depends on what the goal is for the new own owners/group? It's pretty clear that the real value or return on the investment in owning a team is when the team is sold. Witness how much the Pohlads are going to make. However, there are other reasons for owning a team other than making money. Ego? Glory? etc.

So now we understand why they "right sized " the payroll and failed to invest in the team even after the the influx of money from the one year TV deal. They didn't invest in the team because their intention was to sell all along and any additional spending just reduced their profit margin. Don't expect anything to change this off season as they begin to court suitors/buyers. Pretty cynical on their part but not surprising as it is the way the organization has operated for a long time. Even considering inflation, they are going to make a killing on the sale. Carl is probably smiling away in the hereafter.
