  1. The Twins are not Out of It yet, but then again, they aren't In it Yet. We don't know what they are. They strike out a lot. Their defense has been below average. Their pitching is better. Their young players are not mind blowingly excellent. And some may be busts. The odds of them making the playoffs were never good and now are worse. They are in a very good Division. Right now, I have a lot more time to get things done than I anticipated. And, I hope that changes. If not, oh well.
  2. Good night for Twins fans to go to bed early. And wake up to a new day. Wowsa.
  3. Twins are trying to find the bottom. We knew they weren't that good last year, and now, guys like Sano,Rosario and Buxton, are out of their depth. Meanwhile, veterans are not making it happen either, Plouffe, Dozier, Zukie. Unbelievably, only Mauer is showing up, along with Escobar, though with three errors, you can't exactly vote for him for the All-Star Game. Pitching has been decent, except for Perkins and Fien, their two oldest relievers. Who knew that old relief pitchers don't always pan out? Good God, what has Terry Ryan wrought?
  4. Unless we artificially lower the bar, the closer's job is to be a high strike-out guy, or failing that, to generate weak contact and generally demoralize the other team. For Perkins, right now, he demoralizes our team and our fans. I turned to my wife on Sunday and said: This is where the Twins season goes off the rails. Sure enough, he found a way to lose the lead. That kind of thing, when you are hanging by a thread, there should be no patience for it. I'd rather lose with a rookie than watching Perkins stumble around. His fastball is a joke. The slider, as a hitter, you take it. It's rarely in the zone. There is no path forward here for the Twins. None.
  5. Didn't take long, but the mystery is over: the Twins will not be in the post-season this year. But, that was always a dicey proposition anyway, playing in the AL Central. The main thing now is to make progress and grow players. A high draft pick would be a bonus. Most likely they muddle through and play close to .500 ball. No real scapegoats in this: young hitters at key positions, a rotation that is capable but not able to win on their own, an aging backend to the bullpen, a feckless GM who hopes and gut-checks his way to making decisions. I still think the Twins will be good, but the question of when keeps slipping every year. Probably 2018 or so.
  6. In Twins defense in regard to slow starts: with an outdoor park in probably the diciest weather zone for early April, they will almost always have to start on the road. Historically, in the last couple decades, they have been a lousy road team. That said, poor umpiring has been rampant so far, and that falls in favor of the home team and also favors veterans over rookies. So, starting on the road, double whammy with umpires -- sorry guys, that's all I got. They truly look terrible. But, we saw how many years it took the Royals, and a guy like Moustakas, to learn how to hit in MLB. We are about three years away at this point.
  7. Lol, Pelfrey gets shelled by the Yanks in Detroit. Learn to enjoy it boys.
  8. Main thing is that a lot of Twins key players are young and up coming. If they improve and get better, the Twins will be fine. If the young guys have tough nights that turn in to tough months that turn into a long term struggle, then the Twins will be one of the worst teams in the league.
  9. Twins need to play better. Then again, after sweeping all 7 games against the Birds last year, including four in a row in a miracle series when the Twins were all but given up for dead, can you really expect them to win game after game in Baltimore? Escobar. That's my trend.
  10. It's baseball. The Twins had first and third in the ninth and two outs and so did the Orioles. They got a hit. And we didn't. Nothing in that other than the random sifting through of odds. But, Fien's ball spun and stayed straight. I knew when he came in that the Orioles would score. The Twins were lucky it wasn't worse that inning. We'll figure out the bullpen. Over time.
  11. In Baltimore huh? Remember, what was it, 2010 or 11 when they opened there? I was hopeful and I went to a bar to watch it on Cable. Man did I know the worm had turned. They played three games in that series. The Twins lost all three, they never had a single lead, and they were only tied for like two or three innings out of 27. Baltimore mopped the floor with them and that year the Twins sucked for the first time in many a year. Course, last year, in Detroit, they got swept, outscored like 27-3, started 1-6 or something and it turned out they were a good team. So, never easy to generalize on the first series or month, though in the aggregate, it's rare that a team gets up off the floor and makes the playoffs after getting pushed around in the beginning.
  12. Sano = 1B. That's the truth of it. A guy that big, albeit agile and athletic, in MLB, plays 1B. Every. Single. Time. That's the norm. The Twins are moving beyond the norm by virtue of having Mauer, and by winning the contract on Park. OK? We have a stud 1B, he's only 22, we put him in right, we are hoping for the best. End of the day, any other team, in any other division, plays Sano at 1B and he becomes an All-Star and takes them to places they never dreamed. The Twins hem and haw and hope for the best. Gotta hope it works out. But, the "Twins way" in this case, is just plain stupid. Period.
  13. Everyone should realize, Everyone, that there is no need to subscribe to any service, at any time, for any amount of money -- and still be able to watch just about any sporting event you desire. As in, we are now able to get streams online from legitimate sources in Europe, that can't be blocked by US FBI, and which, carry US feeds. So, I'm talking announcers, commercials, everything you get on a TV, available over the internet to anyone who can google "livestream". Just saying. You guys are living in the old economy. And, it just doesn't make for a better world to give the Big Boys money. They support really bad things.
  14. Like the moxie of this prediction, but sincerely doubt MS ever gets there, as excellent as he is at the plate. And I hope I am wrong.
  15. Duffey only has two pitches, though his curve ball comes in slightly different flavors. Two pitches works for a while, especially in the bullpen, where, if you are Mariano Rivera, you only need one really good cut fastball. As it is, if he wants to start, he should be in AAA working on a third pitch. If not, why not put Duffey in the Pen and free May to be a starter with his four pitch arsenal?
  16. Perkins. The Twins got a lot of him, but remember, he was a failed starter. He got tagged when he started games. Heavily. It was always counter-intuitive to me that Perkins became an Ace reliever. I'm open to him being an All-Star, but reality is: he has overachieved, and at some point, he is going to crash and burn. Straight fastball, slider that moves on a linear plane, marginal command. The Twins BP and all their young guns, they better be up for this. Because the rest of the team looks decent.
  17. I haven't seen much discussion about the outfield in the context of who will replace Miguel Sano in the late innings. That's a pretty regular gig in my book, if the Twins are winning. Santana is not a natural RF, but has speed and a good arm. He can learn to do it, but it's not like he is playing much RF at this point. Arcia is a possible late-inning replacement as well, but, let's face it, a year ago we were figuring who would play defense for him in the late innings. Best candidate would have been: Aaron Hicks, now a starting OF with the NY Yankees. Kepler could be that guy, over time, but we want him to play baseball and not sit on the bench waiting for Sano to come off the field. So, it's an issue in my opinion. Twins will figure it out, maybe Maestro makes it after all, but for now, must be Santana, an unnatural corner guy if ever there was one.
  18. KC has Salvy Perez. St. Louis Yadier Molina. SF Posey. There's different ways to win in MLB, but catching is the glue. Gotta hope this guy has room to grow.
  19. One outfielder has to come in for Sano late in games and play quality defense. I guess that means Danny, for now. Switchhitting is nice as well should the game go into extras. And, for that late game quality at bat.... I'm not sure who a guy like Quentin or Arcia is supposed to hit for. Buxton? Escobar? Suzuki? I don't see a lot of pinch-hitting against AL clubs. NL clubs, sure.
  20. Wow, calling out Buxton. Have to say: hope you are wrong about that. Didn't see the game though. Call 'em as you see 'em.
  21. So, yesterday, for a while at least, Joe Mauer was listed as hitting a 2-run homer in the 8th to win it for the Twins. I checked a bunch of different box scores and they all read the same: Mauer 2 for 5 with 3 rbis and a run scored. I thought it funny because looking at his numbers this spring just before that at bat, I was going to leave a comment to the effect: "Anyone else concerned about Joe Mauer?" Come to find out the HR was hit by Carlos Quentin who replaced Mauer at 1st Base. So, maybe the question should stand: Anyone else concerned about Joe Mauer at this point?
  22. Hey, either he can play baseball or he can't. Everyone who scouts professionally has said he can play. Really well. He can play defense, he can run, he can bunt. He also has a good eye , and in MiLB, at least, he can hit. Let him play. See what happens. And enjoy it. He's a man now, let's live with the results.
  23. Sorry, I was trying to navigate to a Twins blog site. My mistake. All the best to the Birds! Where is that Twins site again?
  24. For me it's about watching him take an AB, the swing he puts on the ball, the way he works a pitcher. I'm not looking at numbers, I am watching him and seeing a professional hitter. He looks good right now, that's all.
  25. SSS but Sweeney looks like a professional hitter, patient, thorough, puts a good swing on the ball. I could see those ABs, late in the game, really paying dividends. You hate to ever give up on a Santana or an Arcia, especially if Arcia's power ever comes back, but, the Twins do have a surplus of young talent and they can't keep them all.
