Who cares who starts the season in the bullpen? The Twins should be smart and try to showcase a Milone in AAA or a Pelfrey in MLB and work on a trade that nets a AA prospect, preferably for Pelfrey, since he has the larger contract. The Twins have May and Meyer lurking, with upside, and plenty of prospects for the Pen. Build some value in the veteran pitchers, in whatever fashion possible, then move them for a low-level prospect, save some payroll and improve the rotation and bullpen all in one swoop.

Twins 5th Starter Competition Will Continue
Old Twins Cap replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Boyer, sounds like a great story, according to MLB Trade Rumors. Surprised local bloggers haven't picked up on it. But, hey, if he can pitch, bring it. Love to have someone to root for in the bullpen, instead of fear and loathing, a la Capps, Burton and a bunch of others.- 46 replies

Trevor May States His Case
Old Twins Cap replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The Twins look for reasons why a younger player is not quite ready for the Bigs. After Kubel, Bartlett and Guerrier last year, and legions in the years prior, it's never the right time to bring young talent, but, it's always the perfect time to bring veterans -- who then go on to underperform and create a void that has to be filled by untested players. Yeah, there's more talent in the system finally, but it is still irritating to see the Twins FO never quite take the bit in its mouth: It's about rebuilding, not retooling with aged parts.- 54 replies

Hicks is getting the short shrift here on TD, but on any other club, he would be the preferred option. Young, switch-hits, takes walks, can run, excellent on defense, cannon arm -- dare I say "upside", even if for just trade value with BB waiting in the wings? Put away the hickory switches is what I say. Hicks did not do what the APs of the world wanted in his first two years in MLB. But, other clubs are not impressed that the Twins would start their primary hope for CF in AAA and build value that way. Hicks has been here now, knows the routine. This year, if he fails to perform, a team can legitimately give up on him. But, handing CF to Shane Robinson or the kid from Atlanta, because, I don't know, Hicks is hitting over .300 and stealing bases and playing stellar D, but, once, when the scoreboard had the wrong outs, he didn't run on a popout. Please understand: Shane Robinson and the guy from Atlanta are, in fact, "filler" guys, who can hang around, shag balls, run the bases, but who have no real "upside". Why would you keep them on the roster? Ever? Castoffs. Well, Twins fans sometimes get what they deserve. I suppose we deserve to see another former Twin go elsewhere and perform.

What Will be Stauffer's Role
Old Twins Cap replied to RealTwinsFan357's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Well, at least the Twins have options this year. Gotta like that. Add a reliever from the NL, cut a couple loose that need a new home, got a few extra starters that have good stuff, the MiLB is full of young arms on their way up. I like our chances. If Stauffer tanks, that's the cost of doing business in MLB, but there are options. Worst thing the Twins can do is panic when one of their cast-off signings tanks. Fogeddaboutit. The Twins have made a lot of terrible signings in the last five years. Now at least it will have no real effect on their chances. -
Danny Santana's Role Becoming Solidified
Old Twins Cap replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Nunez. Watch him at bat. He will swing on the first or second pitch, every single at bat. Just watch him sometime. He has zero plate discipline or ability to work a count. In the outfield, non-chalance comes to mind. He really does not bring much to a ballclub, which is why the Yankees let him go. -

Wetmore: "Big Boy" Sano making an impression
Old Twins Cap replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Miguelito did not look like a professional 3-sacker on the double-play grounder he muffed today, but, a young kid like that, it happens. And, if he wants to go garbage-in -- garbage-out as human being who eats, that's his deal. But, over time, poor choices catch up with professional athletes and he will learn, through adversity, that he needs to do better. -
Just like in war, the best battle plan does not survive first contact with Spring Training. There will be injuries, there will be holes, problems, gaps. That's called reality. On paper, this division is all really good. And then, the season begins. I like that the Twins are younger, that they have talent, that they have a stable of decent pitchers, and some hope for a good bullpen. So, they have assets that could add up. And, mainly, they have a new skipper. That's an intangible and no metrics apply. Overall, for the first time in four years, I want to see the games played and see what happens. The rebuild has happened, albeit, way too slow, and now we are on the rise. What level we hit will be the fun part of the equation.

Zulgad: Hicks Confident He Can Contribute
Old Twins Cap replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Twinkie posters: Beat up on some other teams' young players. It just is not productive to hope that Hicks fails at this point. We all know what Hicks' numbers are. The question is whether he can improve and contribute. He's got the skills to do it. A true fan roots for a positive outcome. -
Souhan: Eight observations from camp
Old Twins Cap replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Spring is time for optimism, granted, but if Pelfrey can be that bridge guy from inning 6 to the backend of the bullpen, the Twins are a lot better team. -
Ervin Santana: Switch back to AL, Suzuki and OF Defense.
Old Twins Cap replied to jimmer's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
For the record, I'm agnostic on the issue of framing. My only point is that whatever else happens, if I were a pitcher, I would want to pitch to the world's best defensive catcher. Have you ever seen how many passed balls Perez prevents? The throws he makes? Plays on bunts and dribblers? Pops behind the plate? The pitch calls? The organization/exhortation of the infield? There's a lot more to a catcher's in-game impact than framing pitches. A lot more. -
Ervin Santana: Switch back to AL, Suzuki and OF Defense.
Old Twins Cap replied to jimmer's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Must be tough to have to pitch to Salvador Perez, the world's best defensive catcher. A keyboard and an internet connection is all you need these days to be an expert. That troubles me. -
Schoenfield releases his 2015 rankings predictions for 30-25.
Old Twins Cap replied to jimmer's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
It's pretty easy to beat up on Arcia and Hunter for defense, then look at the kid Santana and say "no way is he that good" thus giving the Twins a ticket to AL basement. But, you know what: I'll take that. I like the swagger in Arcia and the moxie in Hunter, and I couldn't believe Santana was that good either, so I will enjoy being an underdog this year. And embrace it. You gotta earn your way in MLB and this is a year, the first in five, in which the Twins have something to hope for. Bring it on. Can it get any worse then it's been? -
Yaawn. Weekend warriors who are super casual and go to games but don't even watch the action on the field. I.E> drink, flirt, shop, talk, check cell phone, rinse, repeat. Sounds like a losing team not worth watching. And a marketing effort that takes that into account for yet another year. Come to Target Field, the newest mall in America.

Pace of Play and the Twins
Old Twins Cap replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Certainly, whatever else gets done, this idea that a manager can walk out on the field and stand around until he gets a signal from the bench as to the validity of his challenge -- that's just idiotic and contrary to the notion of being a sporting event. Either a manager challenges a call or he doesn't. He shouldn't get confirmation ahead of time from a camera angle. If the umpires have to call it in real time, then make the managers do the same. It just feels stupid to watch a manager scratch at the dirt and wait for the advantage of access to a camera. How does that help the sport?- 41 replies

Twinkie Town interview with Rob Antony
Old Twins Cap replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
All that is true about RBI being a count stat and let's just use OBP or OPS, until, it's the top of 8 in Yankee Stadium, tie game, and you have a guy who walked against Betances on first base. You need that run to score. Period. When I watch the Twins, I say to myself: "Who is going to get a clutch hit, on the road, to beat a good team?" That's not necessarily counting RBIs, it's about knowing the moment in the game and seeing who can make it happen. Great teams get contributions from everyone. The Twins, we need it from someone. -
Reusse's Take on the 2015 Twins
Old Twins Cap replied to stringer bell's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
This is a good thread. Put in freezer for mid-season. I hope no one is saying Mauer is not a good base-runner. He is, especially for a guy a catcher most of his life. Not a Mauer Defender (Coin that NMD), but he is good on instinct and long legs get him there. Haven't seen him thrown out much, if ever. On Vargas, let him play. One great regret in my life is, after 2002, and Ortiz carrying the Twins for major parts of the season, hitting homers in clutch situations, letting him go. Never want to see another super-star emerge in Boston after the Twins give up on him. Ever. Injuries or not. Ditto for Hicks. Some guys take time. Like wine. Sorry guys, if you can't let go of what statistics tell you is the right move. Every once in awhile, a guy emerges from a cave. No one knows why, and all stats do is tell you what just happened. Hunter. Helps with fans, helps with young players, helps with clubhouse stability. That's three bases right there. News: We aren't going to win the World Series. Can we do something positive in the mean time? Assets. One of Santana, Nolasco, Pelfrey, Milone is going to have a good season. If the Twins are out of it, that's called an asset. Last I checked, assets are worth something on the open market. Bitch about the Twins choices, but, this is the way business is played: buy assets, hope value soars, sell them for a profit. -
"Hicksie" has frustrated a lot of people, including himself. But, the Twins cannot give up easily on young talent and then watch it blossom for someone else. He can get on base, he can play defense, he can throw. A lot of this is about figuring out who you really are at the MLB level and learning to excel at that. He has been trying to do too much -- and failing at that. I think the future for him is bright, and I will guarantee that some other organization will jump on him the minute the Twins give up.

The Twins and MLB can resolve the issue of ticket expense, and have, by "tiering' pricing so that there are always cheap seats available for walk-up customers. With 40K seats, that's simply a business model pricing policy in which appealing to a middle-class customer is a priority. When you've got a lousy product, and the Twins qualify on that score, you need to sell tickets in any and every way conceivable. But, that only helps sales at the margin, and does not have a major impact on revenues. Like any other business, you want to not only sell but to capitalize on sales by selling to a high end consumer who will spend money in other ways. Unfortunately, when you have a lousy product, most avenues to more revenues are blocked by the quality of the product. If the Twins had been pro-active, back in 2011 and realized the importance of the quality of their product, they would not have slid as far as they did. But, now, it's too late, and they have to spend to rebrand, and recapture market segments that have moved on to other entertainment venues. It sucks to be bad, but the Twins have no one to blame but themselves. It was their own complacency with the quality of their product that led them to paralysis as their performance slid downhill from the top to one of the 5 worst teams in MLB over just 12 months. Now, rebuilding is a huge expense from a low base of revenue, and there is no sure way forward, other to spend and try to put a better team on the field.
