  1. Answer is in two parts: Santana isn't a CF, and Escobar can be inserted in the lineup whenever Molitor wishes. I chose not to be a SA and say neither Plouffe, Dozier, or Mauer will play CF so Escobar can play when Molitor deems--but I'm trying to change my image.
  2. There have been numerous RHRP that were effective against LHB. The good news is that they are effective against RHB too! These are the prototypical RPs--pitchers who can get batters out consistently irrespective of in which batter's box they stand. Find/develop that type of pitcher instead of relying on "tricks" to get outs.
  3. Brown vs. Hicks is the question. Hmm, the answer is unclear to me. Maybe I should just wit and see if this "problem" can be solved internally--rather than dipping into "Ryan's Dumpster".
  4. Veterans Rule!
  5. It is to be expected that there will be considerable discussion about minor league players--it's Spring Training and there are many of them in camp. There are frequently about 60 people at camp since only 25 make the Active Roster much discussion will concern them. I'm unsure of your definition of negativity but if it includes disagreement of management decisions--Sports should be avoided since disagreement is the norm not the exception.
  6. Given the results of the past two seasons and this Spring your statement doesn't hold water. "Too fast" implies that another year or so of minor league experience--and Voila` a major league quality ballplayer is produced. We have waited those two seasons (plus this Spring) and yet Hicks still isn't major-league caliber. He wasn't moved "too fast"--he simply Failed. Hicks likely will never amount to a major league caliber player.
  7. Just when I thought I had read the last about Benson...
  8. Returning to the premise of the thread "...reducing clarity...", I must disagree. The roster decisions confirm that the Front Office is "putting lipstick on a pig" hoping to convince the public (hey, it appears that they have convinced at least half of TD posters!) that the Twins are a "good" ballclub worthy of their support (and money). The definition of a "good" ballclub is "flexible"--it is whatever you want it to be. 2015 is but another season where problems were "defined", some personnel changes were made, some actions taken, and a posture of "fixed" made. Sadly, "fixed" hasn't yielded a "good enough" ballclub. But, some things have been consistent: never a pronouncement that a "total rebuild" is/was needed or that management expected that the process would be 5+ years.
  9. Hicks playing everyday in Rochester? For perhaps three months--and then what? Hicks's Spring has washed him out of the everyday-OFer category as far as the Minnesota Twins. It's time to move him before the clash with Buxton for playing time--even for a bus token.
  10. " Are the Twins Making the Right Decision ? " We will have our answer within two months. My gut, (and history) cries "NO!". The inevitable roster moves, followed by the question "can we really trust these results?". Leading to the off-season between '15 and '16--"What now?" More of the same that we have heard from 2012--"There! I 'fixed' things". Rinse, Lather, Repeat. Or, "Nuts, this ain't working". "We gotta try something new."
  11. I wish I had been paid $5.5MM/year with the precondition that I would get demoted.
  12. I bolded a word on your statement (rather than the entire passage Mudcat). This also applies to position players/hitters.
  13. "...on them." Yes, but there is more. If these two were the only "prospects" to fail--but we haven't seen a Twins "prospect" truly blossom into a top-of-the-rotation pitcher for quite some time. It appears that the Twins' minor league development system has to be be big part of the problem. There is no need to shout about "..best minor league system.." to me, I've many posts on just that subject. But, I must point out that those "top prospects" are still minor leaguers--the verdict on them isn't in.
  14. As opposed to demoting/releasing Pelfrey and using a trained and youthful relief pitcher in the bullpen?
  15. If June's roster is significantly different from April's roster it means: a) another fraud has been perpetrated on the fans about "competitiveness"; another denial by the Front Office that the team is in total rebuild; and c) more time has been wasted on the development of the:" up-and-comers". How many years will the charade continue? Apparently b right paren yields a funky symbol.
  16. I don't have a problem with Pelfrey's response. He's disappointed--and should be! I don't think fans have a right to expect every statement from players should be along the line "it's soo wonderful here in Minnesota, and anything management does is best--and I'm hap-hap-happy with them...". Do I believe this "competition" for 5th starter was slanted (if not outghtly rigged?)--Yes I do! This is the Twins! Queue up the "bigger picture" comment. Examine the other player decisions--heavily skewed to favor older players--very much in-line with previous Twins' policy and their implied statement of "WIN NOW". So, we wait--until about 6 weeks into the season--and see the results. Then the interesting part...
  17. There's a new TV show where the main character is a detective and often says "I'm you, and..."--yeah, I'm a MLB GM and I get a call from Terry Ryan who says "Hey, I have this [starting] pitcher [fill in the blank], what would you offer me for him?" I ponder, [name here] can't crack one of the worst rotations in BB, his salary is in the millions, and oh yeah, he just might be DFA'd. "Nothing!" I answer, "I can't use him".
  18. Carnac sees May in Rochester this April.
  19. I believe it would be a mistake to take damaged goods at #6. There has to be someone who projects to be a high-quality MLer there. The Twins have so darn many holes it shouldn't be all that tough to find someone.
  20. The Twins don't need to trade for a mediocre relief pitcher. If the "veterans" Ryan bought are unacceptable, then start using the options on the minor leaguers. A platoon of RPs were drafted recently, (plus those already on hand) use these guys. Each has a total of three years of options--use them!
  21. I read this article today also and my take is that the Twins are fed up wih Arcia. Reusse is likely writing a PR for the Twins. Arcia's defense would be tolerated--if his hitting was "on target". I expect many roster moves if this team "starts slowly". All positions could be affected--except 2B. Incude Arcia on the "at risk" list.
  22. Let's take a step back to last Spring--Santana was professed to be "not ready" and sent to the minors. Escobar was one of the guys from the Liriano trade--"or how the Twins SS problem was fixed". Back to 2006, Bartlett was deemed to be "not ready" (didn't "take charge" or something like that)--so the Twins started a mediocrity (a bit generous, but I'll be nice here) rather than promote Bartlett (who wasn't any Spring chicken). Enough was enough and the rookie was promoted in 2006 (only to be...it's too painful to continue). Returning to 2014, CF was a similar mess to '06's SS problem, so...promote somebody who has speed and a strong arm. Enter Santana. "Not Ready" to play SS, but somehow can be trusted in CF. Santana was a SS not a CF--but oh my did he hit way above expectations. He is still a SS and not a CF. The question to be answered: will the Twins develop the guy they had projected to be a starting SS or accept mediocrity to try to win a few more games this season (since I expect that CF will continue to be a bleeding ulcer)? As far as a trading one of them? I don't think the Twins were offered much (if anything) for either Santana or Escobar--else a trade would have happened by now.
  23. Coaching Staff? No. Ryan and the rest of the Front Office--it would have been their decision to favor the veterans over the "up-and-comers".
  24. Consider the team's performances in August and September the past four years, I wonder if there weren't some in the FO doing just that.
  25. "Big Picture Issues"--1) Burdi was never going to be placed on the Active Roster for Opening Day; 2) "WIN NOW"; and 3) "We trust veterans" more in order to "WIN NOW", and they need the innings. I could have included "service time" delay for "control issues", but that is unnecessary due to the above three reasons. The $85MM Plan might have included Burdi at Spring Camp (but would have necessitated the manditory service time delay). But the revised Plan (which added $21MM) said NO to Burdi. Every poster's new bullpen friend (Stauffer) will take that roster spot that might have been used for Burdi.
