  1. Reyes? We might be lucky to get Dennys Reyes at this point.
  2. No. It is one thing to hit .250 without a lot of power while you acclimate to MLB, but quite another to bat under .200 with lots of K's and declining power.
  3. Now? Pretty sure if Hicks was a first round pick in 1988 and handed the opening day CF and leadoff job in 1993, you would have heard a lot about it if he failed to hit .200. You would have heard less about it since there was no modern internet, but columnists, commentators, heck even coaches/managers would be talking about it (just as they did in 2013). Dave McCarty, Todd Walker...
  4. But did we think the same thing about Danny Santana last year?
  5. Segura isn't that good, but the idea is interesting. If we are really sold on Hicks, and feeling a bit skeptical on Buxton, I could entertain Buxton for Susac + prospect(s), maybe? Susac would come with 5-6 years of control. On that train of though -- would you trade present-day Buxton for Garza/Bartlett circa 2008?
  6. TR actually never traded any prospects midseason during the Terry 1.0 era. An offseason deal of 2 minor league relievers for Luis Castillo is the only notable TR trade of prospects that I can recall.
  7. Relax, everybody. The title of this article clearly says AT the trade deadline. I am sure the Twins will start actively shopping precisely at 3:00 PM today.
  8. FYI, it was an off season deal, so Shields had 2 full years of control by KC.
  9. I get the feeling that Robinson is going to last the season. Same with Boyer. They are not great, but the team views them as veterans who are doing their jobs (modest and limited as that may be). Personally, I think they have enough interesting OF options to mix and match and not need Robinson, even with Buxton on the shelf.
  10. And the red-hot White Sox are looking to buy?
  11. The luster was off of Young by the time we acquired him. Unless they were evaluating him by raw RBI totals, which they may have been (see Rob Antony's interview, circa 2010). Trading him straight-up for Garza, in the same off season you were dealing Santana, would have been bad. Also including a starting SS for their utility guy who could NOT handle SS was terrible.
  12. Well, we all know Gomez will sign back here at age 40, so it's really just a question of how many years we re-sign him after that.
  13. Harrison had better results than Nolasco, pre-injury (although that was a long time ago). He is also younger and left-handed. I could see the argument that teams would be more interested in him, or former star Jose Reyes, than in Nolasco.
  14. After this year, Wheeler has 4 years of control left, but only 1 pre-arb year left, and he still has to show he is recovered from surgery. And his pre-injury performance, while promising, wasn't THAT great. And this is an area of immense strength for the Mets -- they have 4 young starters in MLB right now arguably better than Wheeler. They could afford to deal him for a multi-year asset.
  15. Tulo took Reyes spot. Hawkins takes Doubront's.
  16. People praised the Matt Kemp deal? Trading Trea Turner to put Wil Myers in CF? The Melvin BJ Upton trade? I think people were impressed by the Padres' aggressiveness, but I don't know that there was a whole lot of praise involved. Or what praise there was (Norris, Shields, the better Upton, etc) was fully balanced by more iffy moves. I don't think the Jays have gone "all in" that frequently either. The Dickey trade was big, but ultimately for a pretty modest contract. The Reyes part of the Marlins deal was big, but the rest of the deal pretty modest too (like Buehrle). And the FA deals for AJ Burnett and BJ Ryan only seem "all in" compared to Metrodome-era Twins spending. Honestly, outside Reyes/Tulo, the Jays general approach hasn't been much "bigger" than TR in free agency the past couple winters.
  17. Not saying you did, just further exploring how it might be better to "fail" sometimes than to "succeed". Ultmately it would be the Twins setting the more modest goals.
  18. Just like 2007, we could probably trade for Butera again.
  19. The single A SS was a top 100 prospect after the season (Willy Adames). And just ranked #44 on BA's mid season list.
  20. I see Chief already clarified, but I would add that when you artificially limit your goals (i.e. we can't compete this year anyway), then "succeeding" at those goals can indeed be worse than failing to achieve a different, higher set of goals.
  21. I wonder if TR's conservatism prevents him from taking much advantage of other team's incompetence? I know we can't insert ourselves into every major deal like this, but I don't think TR has ever scored any. He is nothing if not deliberate, and I think that delay can kill opportunities like this. I wonder how our talks about Tulo went. Did TR even press if Colorado said he was available and they liked Gubson and Sano? Seems we could have scored him for less than that, had we continued negotiating. Or did TR effectively say we're not interested and walk away?
  22. Toronto was one of my sleeper picks, as I thought they could move Reyes. I remember when Toronto notably passed on Tulo in the draft, picking Ricky Romero instead...
  23. I too am underwhelmed by the return. The Twins absolutely could have topped it on the prospect side and effectively the money side, but obviously we have nothing like Reyes to offer.
  24. Hunter is also 10th in B-Ref WAR (once you remove the Senators players); http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/MIN/leaders_bat_50.shtml
