  1. The market obviously disagrees with you. Averaged over 2 years, Holland's deal would only be $10.5 mil per year too.
  2. Escobar and Mauer were hitless for their careers vs Boyd. I suspect that influenced today's lineup.
  3. Holland's $15 mil is an option, and it doesn't vest unless he's healthy and closing for most of 2017. If he's doing that, he's probably back and flippable at that price.
  4. Has this been posted yet? "Minnesota Twins considering Louisville lefty Brendan McKay along with Hunter Greene" http://www.twincities.com/2017/04/09/minnesota-twins-considering-louisville-lefty-brendan-mckay-along-with-hunter-greene/ Here's some stats for McKay: http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/profile.asp?P=brendan-mckay http://www.gocards.com/cumestats.aspx?path=baseball
  5. Cincinnati had the 2nd best record in baseball at 5-1 a year ago today. LOL? If you want a list of best 2017 records, you can sort the standings by winning percentage. Obviously ESPN's rankings are trying to accomplish something else. (I don't pay attention to ESPN so I have no idea how successful they are at accomplishing that goal, but the discrepancy between the Twins current record and rank would not be a valid criticism of their efficacy.)
  6. Out of curiosity, I looked up Buxton's 2017 WAR so far. I know it's a super-small sample size and quite likely meaningless of the defensive side, but I thought it was interesting. At B-Ref, he's -5 runs batting so far (basically the negative mirror of Sano at +5), but he's already +3 runs with the glove. Of course, Fangraphs isn't even publishing UZR or defensive WAR for 2017 yet, which is probably wise.
  7. In regards to the division, Fangraphs wasn't very high on anyone other than Cleveland. Preseason projected win totals: Cleveland 93.5 Detroit 81.6 Kansas City 75.5 Twins 74.9 Chicago 67.8 That probably does increase the potential that one of those non-Cleveland teams could pad their record a bit above their "true talent" level.
  8. Preseason, Fangraphs had the Twins projected at 75-87. Obviously not enough time has elapsed for their model to really change from the preseason projection, so applying that projection over their remaining games gives us 72-84, which would put us at 77-85 overall.
  9. That's fine, but did Molitor really do that last year? Tonkin had plenty of low-leverage multi-inning stints last year. Arguably we didn't have many relievers worth saving at all points of last season...
  10. Last year they often didn't have a Haley. And continuing to miscast Tonkin as a long reliever should go in the minus column, no? If they're not going to use him in short relief, might as well cut him at this point.
  11. I was a part of history! Free seat upgrades did seem unusually easy to come by...
  12. The Twins didn't open at home those years though. I don't think anyone here cares about an off day further into the season, it is day #2 that is a letdown.
  13. True. Most of the high-rollers in attendance probably have full season ticket packages anyway, so it's no real skin off their back. I guess they do schedule a ton of extra employees for opening day, but they treat/pay those employees pretty poorly anyway...
  14. Honestly, how good would an opening day doubleheader be? No regular season baseball for months, and then bam! Two games in one day!
  15. I just looked it up, and this is a relatively new phenomenon too. Somehow the Twins got by playing consecutive days to open the season through 2012. 2013 seems to be when they added this scheduled day off. Of course, they used to often begin the season on a Friday, and they wouldn't want a Saturday off day. Now they try to begin on a Monday, and they obviously don't care about an open date on a Tuesday. Maybe they should just schedule the Monday game for noon, and the Tuesday game for 7 PM, which would allow them to postpone the Monday game but keep it "opening day" and make a Tuesday split doubleheader if necessary? Honestly the odds of an opening day postponement aren't that high, and teams seem to resist the possibility even with the open date.
  16. I hate it too, but teams don't want scheduled game 1 postponed until after scheduled game 2. They charge a premium for scheduled game 1.
  17. I would guess the "petition" language sometimes used is just a formality. I have never heard of a player meeting these eligibility requirements but the team being denied the option. The requirements are pretty cut and dried, there is no subjective criteria to them: http://www.thecubreporter.com/book/export/html/3521 And of course if a team didn't bother to file paperwork to get the option, that would be rather negligent. Not quite on the level of the Twins failing to tender Travis Lee a contract in 1996, but maybe on the level of giving Polanco 92 days active in rookie ball in 2010. I'm going to assume Kepler has an option this year until I hear otherwise. (I imagine we simply haven't heard about it because his spot on the roster has been a lock for some time, unlike Vargas.)
  18. Bump! Promo is live today. Some redemption instructions here: https://slickdeals.net/f/9829299-t-mobile-customers-mlb-tv-premium-mlb-com-at-bat-premium-free
  19. Kepler has an option remaining for 2017. He has been on the 40-man since November 2013, so he has been optioned 3 times. But since he hasn't yet played 5 "full" pro seasons (90+ days active, generally means seasons above rookie league ball), he qualified for a 4th option year. Same for Vargas -- 4th option this year. Almost the same for Polanco, but he spent 92 days active between two rookie leagues in 2010, thus counting as a "full season" and making him ineligible for a 4th option this year. Note that if Kepler and Vargas don't get optioned this year (i.e. spend the whole 2017 season on the MLB roster or disabled list), this option would not carry over to 2018 because both would then have 5 "full" pro seasons. Unlike the first 3 standard options, which are still available if unused (hence how the Twins were still able to option veteran Kyle Lohse in May 2006).
  20. Eduardo Escobar has been the emergency catcher in the past, so I assume he still is.
  21. But, our best power hitter is batting leadoff, so we need better hitters in the 7-8-9 spots to get on base for him! Thus, we need to bat our worst hitter 6th.
  22. I have no idea what kind of pitching he faced (sadly, B-Ref didn't track spring training stats, so I don't even have their "Opposition Quality" estimate), but Turner put up a nice line this spring: 34 AB, 13 hits, 2 2B, 2 3B, 1 HR, 6 BB, 6 K, 1 HBP, .382/.488/.647, 1.135 OPS 14.6% BB rate, 14.6% K rate The two triples suggest there was some kind of weirdness (weather? stadium conditions? bad outfielders?). But he wasn't overmatched in his first real spring training exposure (he only had 3-4 PA in each of the 2014-2016 Twins spring trainings).
  23. Link: http://www.thecubreporter.com/book/export/html/3517 Relevant passage: It's almost always a formality, but Rule 5 players indeed have to clear waivers before they can be returned to their original teams. (Also, the return price / waiver fee is now $50,000 because the original Rule 5 price has also doubled, to $100,000.)
  24. Well, they faced a RH starter last year 116 times, and a LH starter 46, so that could still be a platoon arrangement. But, it's probably hard to platoon catchers. Day game after a night game won't necessarily be a different handed starting pitcher. But hopefully the Twins look ahead and try to do this as much as possible -- for their careers, Castro and Gimenez both have a .200+ OPS platoon penalty.
