    So for tonight, I’d say....Thorpe for 4, May for 2, Harper, Romo and...some other guys? Clippard starting for the Indians. Play loose and hang a big number of him! I’d say they hit at least 3-4 homers in the night cap.

    Meanwhile, the Twins hit 23 homers off of Baltimore in their six matchups, almost four per game. Extrapolate that over 19 games, and they would have hit 73 homers against Baltimore.

    The Yankees hit 61 home runs against the Orioles in their 19 match-ups this year.

    Realistically, the Twins need to win at least one game of the three in Cleveland, and then take care of business against Detroit, KC and Chicago. For the record would be good to notch that win tonight. (And I would accept more than one win against Cleveland.)

    I think you misspelled the hitter of the year, it’s spelled J-A-Y-L-I-N. Or at least that’s what the voting (and performance) indicates. I’m guessing you didn’t want to give the award to a player no longer in the Twins system, which is fair. Thanks for putting together the article. Not as strong a set of performances as the pitchers, but then again, the big league club needs pitching a lot more than hitting. (And note the conspicuous absences of Kiriloff and Lewis...)

    To me the biggest part of this win, and last Saturday against the Indians, is the resilience of the team after gut punches. Lose Pineda, face Cleveland after a series opening loss, face Clevingee to face on Sunday, and they win the game, backed by a big game for Odorizzi. Yesterday, lose Buxton, have already lost 1.5 games in two days to Cleveland, and Berrios comes up huge. Those were the two biggest wins of the season, in my opinion. With rain on the horizon, Cleveland could have been 3.5 games back heading into this weekend if the Twins hadn’t won yesterday.

    While it’s a novelty, and would be nice to set the record, I don’t care too much if they finish with more or less than the Yankees. All that matters is the post-season. I do wonder, though, if MLB does something to swing the pendulum back towards pitchers next year. This year has been crazy with regards to home runs. If so, the record could stand for a while.

    It’s unfortunate that the Twins lose their most effective starter for September and the playoffs. I suppose it is fortunate that they got his 25 or so starts and that they still count. Who knows how much his performance was enhanced by his use of banned substances.

    Cleveland has 60 losses, so would need to go 21-0 to get to a max of 102 wins. The Twins have 87 wins, and would need to go 16-6 to finish with 103 wins and guarantee the division win. Twins also need to go 13-9 to get to 100 wins. Definitely within reach.

    Am I alone in wishing Berrios wouldn’t start tonight, but rather took a few days off and pitches against Cleveland this weekend? 1)I think his arm could use a few days of rest, and 2)The games against Cleveland are sort of twice as important as the games against Boston.

    I know everyone on this site hates Gibson, is ready to be done with him, etc. But I will say, he’s got an ERA+ of 100, and is posting his career best walk and strikeout rates. He’s started every game, and isn’t an ace, but he is a very serviceable. He’s not at the top of his game right now, but he’s average, and he’s had stretches where he has been well above that. I think that the animosity towards him is overwrought and undeserved. And the incessant “nibble” comments kind of drive me nuts. When pitchers get ahead with two strikes, they try to get the hitters out with pitches out of the zone. That’s what pitchers do. If he were to throw more two-strike pitches down the middle, people would complain about giving players good stuff to hit with two strikes.

    Gibson gets more Ks, gives up fewer hits, fewer walks, fewer home runs, has a lower ERA, a lower WHIP, a lower FIP, has more wins, and has three times as many career WAR. Other than that, they are the same, I guess.

    69 points. When looking at last night’s boxscore, that’s the difference between the Tigers highest OPS (Ronny Rodriguez; 715) and the Twins’ lowest OPS (Adrianza; 784, Castro; 788). And I assume Garver and his 941 OPS will be in against the lefty today.
