  1. Not isolated...I gave more than one example off the top of my head...if you watch him enough, you can see him play dirty a lot. There's a difference between being gritty and being dirty. And, again, I'm not sure what the fascination is with giving a guy credit for being one of usually 30-40 players who accomplish a team goal.
  2. In early 2007, White Sox versus Twins...AJ hits the ball, sprints to 1B and purposely goes inside the baseline, looks down to aim his cleated foot at Morny's ankle. He tried it twice in the same game, only clipped Morny once...and it was obvious that was what he was trying to do. AJ also did it to Zobrist at 2B on a very late slide...resulted in him getting beaned in his next AB
  3. Did Pavano, Castillo and Capps qualify as star quality players when we got them? Regardless of the fact Willingham is the biggest FA contract in Twins history, Willingham was signed at a discount while cutting payroll. If they thought THAT money would sign Cuddy, they were delirious. Hudson was a one year deal for 5M after no one else bit on him...was our need for 2B limited to one season when we signed him?
  4. If we don't have a better option in our organization to play 1B than Mauer, then he might as well play 1B cause we aren't going to go out and pay for a better option. I understand and agree with the whole positional value angle, but that kind of goes out the window if our 1B options aren't any better than the options we have for catcher. In other words, would Mauer at 1B and Pinto/Hermann/Doumit at catcher provide more offense than Mauer at C and goodness knows what scrub at 1B?
  5. St Louis also wins by trading prospects for star quality players (Holliday) and then stepping up and signing them for what they deserve. They also go and get quality FAs like Beltran and Chris Carpenter. Those guys are hardly just complimentary players and hardly low paid. Do you see us doing that in the future? If you're going to point to a teams way of doing things as the way for us to go, look at the whole picture. And, again, no one is saying building through the farm system isn't the main way to rebuild. What people are saying is there are many ways to get the job done and all avenues need to be utilized.
  6. Since we will be counting almost exclusively on prospects to put us back into contention in the near future, I thought looking at the following study might help us decide how realistic those expectations are: Success and Failure Rates of Top MLB Prospects - Royals Review
  7. Anyone who purposely tries to injure other players is not a player I can root for. AJ is one of those people.
  8. I think it looks good...and glad to see Ryan was able to get payroll under 80M. I knew if he tried hard enough, he could do it :-)
  9. So, basically, we shouldn't ever sign a quality FA ever cause they will require money and years and we'll end up deal with declining years. The declining years argument keeps popping up...and almost every quality FA will get a contract during the normal declining years. That's a convenient stance.
  10. Parmellee's minor league OPS last year was over 1.000. How did he do in the majors last year and this year? And when pointing our Presley's minor league numbers last year, you fail to mention he played twice as much in the majors last year than the minors. 370PAs last year in the majors. Why do you grab hold of his minor league numbers last year over his major league numbers last year when he had more than double plate appearances in the majors? Are his minor league plate appearances last year more telling of his major league abilities than his twice as many major league plate appearances last year?
  11. The only real positive comments I've seen is basically, 'we did this for Justin.' That's the company line being said by Ryan, announcers, etc.
  12. Perhaps, I can say that..can't say he's had an OBP over .280 in either of the last two seasons. If you wanna believe he comes over here and miraculously becomes a solid leadoff guy, that's certainly your prerogative. There's no evidence yet to suggest he will.
  13. Dozier isn't the surest thing among the position players, Mauer is...but my belief in Dozier hasn't waivered. I've been a Dozier fans since before ST of 2012.
  14. Going into today, Pressley had a career OBP under .300. He hasn't posted an OBP over .280 the last two seasons in the majors. And the PTBNL was already named...it's not Pimentel
  15. A common belief is that a players prime is 26-30. What do you think is the normal age of a free agent?
  16. I know I like Morneau more than I liked Hrbek. Championships are a team accomplishment and have no bearing whatsoever when comparing players, IMO.
  17. This thread is getting hi-jacked pretty quickly. There were three choices available, four if you count the rally monkey.
  18. I don't know how to project a 2014 lineup for the Twins without asking myself what Ryan should/might do in the offseason. So I'll just say, they may have some players not on the roster right now, or they may not. Pretty sure Mauer and Dozier will be involved.
  19. There is a huge, but huge list of players, including star players, that signed extensions well before they become free agents. Smart teams get it done early.
  20. Let's just wait to bring them all up at the same time. 2015, 2016. Are we just convinced we're only going to have these guys for their first 6 seasons and then they're gone?
  21. I'm guessing you meant 13 QS, not complete games? That's good that it's gotten better. We're still, for the season, dead last in the majors for every meaningful stat for the rotation going into today. Nice to see Correia and Pelfrey doing so well recently.
  22. Seth, I'll ask the same thing I asked earlier. In your opinion, based on who we got and the fact Morny was gone at the end of the year, how does this trade actually effect us long term?
  23. Bremer just got done saying Pressley is going to be the primary CF for the rest of the year...
  24. I don't think the trade effects us at all in the long run. I'm not the one who claimed it had an effect on us in the long run. In his defense of this trade, he said it will likely help us in the long run. I asked how.
  25. Yes, Ryan has made it clear that this trade was mostly for Morny...that's the PR spin. This reminds me of how he talked about the Castillo trade. He said we could absorb the loss, then said we were a better team with the trade. Those statements, together, make no sense. When you say you can absorb a loss that means you have enough talent to make up for the dropoff in talent. Right there, that's saying you didn't make the team BETTER, but that the team is good enough for the dropoff not to hurt so much. He also said on one day that he made the trade because Castillo was a FA at the end of the year...two days later he said he would have made the same trade anyway even if we had Castillo for another year... And we all know what happened the end of that season...
