  1. True, but I meant as a team...as a whole.
  2. Truth is...we have failed horribly in every aspect of the game...every...single...aspect. Even the bullpen, though overworked for sure and with a decent ERA, has failed when it comes to inherited runners scoring...which is a pretty important part of relieving.
  3. You think it's just ERA that show they haven't been up to par? He said 'ERA AND those type of things'. Did you see my response to that quote? If you wanna blame it all on defense, well, look at their FIPs. Not that great either. ...oh, and maybe if it's defense that is the big probelm, and it is a big problem, he should maybe take some blame for that too...maybe he should have also taken the defense into account when he decided to get a bunch of pitchers who need to rely very heavily on defense to be successful
  4. Maybe TR shouldn't bring himself back then, since he wants to shoulder all the blame.
  5. My favorite quote: ' Regardless of ERA and those types of things, even Correia and Pelfrey, they’ve done what you might want to expect.”' yeah, those pesky ERAs and other things that evaluate how a pitcher does...if it wasn't for them, people would say they did great. Apprently the scouts told him they've been better than their numbers suggest :-) And yes, besides allowing a boatload of inherited runs, the bullpen has been decent. My favorite line: 'Ryan suggested that injuries to key players played a substantial role in the Twins’ third consecutive losing season ' SUBSTANTIAL role? Blaming this season on injuries is just funny...no team goes without injuries...no team should fold because a guy or two misses some time. This kind of losing is what happens when you put this kind of rotation together backed up by too many guys that either aren't ready for the show or never will be ready for the show. He focuses on the offensive issues and kind of sidesteps the rotation issues (besides sort of patting himself on the back for the, um, er, success of Correia and Pelfrey)which are even worse and which HE SAID he'd do everything possible to make substantially better.
  6. Well, I don't believe he ever has before. Speaking of trading great prospects for great, proven, MLB pitching...KC is two games back for the wild card.
  7. I stopped being a Gardy supporter towards the end of the 2007 season, though I won't slam him just to slam him and I will give him his due when I think it's warranted. I would like to see someone new...but only if that someone new came from completely outside the organization. I don't see that happening.
  8. What a fantastic post!
  9. Between last year and this year, Darvish has been worth 44.3M. His salary for 2012-2013 is a combined 15M. He's well on his way to making up whatever they 'overpaid' him.
  10. Exactly...parameters of the debate just keep moving...Not only that, but who is to say paying for a quality player is spending money for the sake of spending? We have a plethora of holes to fill, spending to fill one or more isn't spending to spend...
  11. We hadn't seen a rookie like Trout, when it comes to all around game, in generations...and this year he's even better offensively. As hopeful as I am that Buxton ends up as good or better, I wish they'd stop these kind of comparisons.
  12. It's almost like you can feel your head is about to explode, no? :-)
  13. The upcoming core won't be due significant pay raises until around 2018...if even then...assuming they are even worthy of significantly high salaries by then (or ever) to begin with. 2018 just so happens to be the last year of Mauer's contract. Limiting our spending to just three year contracts this upcoming offseason, in order to pay for our players we are just hoping will be good enough to be worth a large salary, doesn't make much sense and will severely limit the quality of players we can sign.
  14. Yesterday, a fan on another site I frequent wrote: "Realistically the Twins were eliminated the minute Terry Ryan said he was happy with the starting pitchers he acquired in the off-season" If he was happy with what he did last offseason, why would we think he'd even bother to shoot higher this coming offseason?
  15. What they CAN or CAN'T do isn't in question. They CAN eventually bring this payroll down to 50M or lower if they want to. You seem to have this idea that in order to be fans we just have to accept anything Twins ownership/management does or doesn't do. That doesn't fly. I believe most people will tell you they expect people to live up to their word...even more so when it involves money...even more so when it involves a huge amount of money. If you don't expect that, that's certainly your choice...but you probably shouldn't expect most people to think the same way.
  16. Jim Pohlad said that is supposed to be goal in most years about 3 years ago. That was hardly long ago. But yeah, now that they have the mostly publicly funded new ballpark, and they are reaping the benefits of it, I guess there is no need to live up to their end of the bargain. I mean, they said they needed the new ballpark in order to keep competitive financially with payroll...that was their main reason they told the public as to why they needed a new park. With where payroll is now, they are under 2007 payroll (which occurred while in the dome) when taking into account inflation...and baseball players pay has hardly just matched inflation. Next year, it will be even lower. Why did they need a new mostly publically funded ballpark again? Other than to get a huge boost on how much the team was worth? And why are some fans so eager to just excuse/justify the lack of spending as if there wasn't an inherent agreement between the Pohlads and the public? Your post makes it seem like it's okay with you for them to stay lower than the 50%, not only in rebuilding years, but all the time.
  17. So, 50M is where you draw the line? Why that number? If payroll is at 60M, that somehow backs up your thinking? It'd be a dropoff of another 20M off this year's payroll before even taking into account the extra 25M coming in.
  18. Are you really saying that the As and Royals have been about the same competitively over the last 15 years? Or am I misunderstanding what you're saying?
  19. I'm not sure how many times I have to say I liked the Willingham signing....but I'll do it again, I liked the signing. What I was saying is that the money saved by signing him instead of Cuddy didn't matter cause we didn't use it to help us in other areas. I wasn't 'degrading him' in the least. And I didn't say there's no ideal FA, at least not by MY standard. I'm saying that based on the parameters set forth by many in here who constantly defend the lack of signings by Ryan, there is no FA that can avoid hitting at least one of the conditions of being a bad signing...ergo there is no perfect FA based on all the different excuses thrown around for not signing a player...but those aren't MY parameters. Here's a question. Was signing Willingham better than signing Cuddyer? Throw out the money (since the money save wasn't used to help the team). Who is the better overall player, all things considered (that means defense too)? I'd say Cuddyer. Again, not a slam on Willingham...
  20. yeah, he also didn't actually predict playoff for the Twins in 2015, he thinks May and Meyer will both likely be in the rotation next year, he thinks the Astros will make the playoffs in 2016, and he has the Royals as unknown as to when they'll make the playoffs. Doesn't even guess. It reads as if he believes the Astros have a shot of making the playoffs sooner than the Royals. How anyone can look at the Astros and Royals and say that? The Royals are in the playoff race right now.
  21. Again, as a fan, I'm concerned with getting quality players. If a guy is getting 16M and is only producing at 12M, I'm happier with that than getting a guy at 5M and getting 6M value cause the guy giving us 12M value is doing twice as well. This whole underpaid/overpaid thing...I don't care about that...especially when we are well under budget. I'm not a Pohlad beancounter, I care about the quality of the product on the field. So, no, it's obviously easy to understand over and under paid, my question is, as a fan, why do we care when there is plenty of money left untapped? His contract was a 'bargain' compared to the Cuddyer contract and they took that saved money...and did absolutely nothing with it. But I understand...he was the perfect FA signing...because the fact that he was cheap voids some of the reasons normally given for not signing a FA to a multi-year contract...those being that it's bad to sign FA during their declining years or during bad seasons, or during rebuilding seasons.
  22. Imagine how bad it would have been if Ryan hadn't done everything possible to greatly improve our rotation this year :-)
  23. We are still last in MLB for starter ERA, IP, QS, Ks, BAA, OBPA, SLGA. We were not last in all those last year. Some maybe, but not all.
  24. So it was a perfect FA signing cause it was an inexpensive signing? Ryan has a lot of perfect FA signings then. As far as the quote, you mean after signing with Detroit he said that's where he wants to be? What would you have expected him to say? Would you have expected him to say he wanted to be somewhere else but settled for Detroit?
  25. I didn't say it was a bad signing...I'm saying his signing fits multiple criteria on the reasoning we keep being given for why it's not good to sign a free agent.
