  1. Probably cause FIP is a major component of WAR for Fangraphs (not the only component) and his FIP is 4.14. 'In order to match up with the theory behind WAR for position players, FanGraphs has traditionally used a context-neutral statistic (Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP)) in order to express a pitcher’s value to their team.' Some people have expressed a dislike for FIP, so it should be hard for them to argue against FIP in debates but the use Fangraphs WAR stat for pitchers to help their point in other debates.
  2. problem with platooning is that when we carry 13 pitchers and 3 catchers, there's hardly any room on the bench.
  3. have yet to see a national article say that the Twins have loads of money coming off the books and will likely be a major player in free agency...or in the market to trade for a high quality player. It's always buy low, low risk, possible high reward types.
  4. 'Sherman wonders if the Mets might consider swapping him for another buy-low candidate like Jeremy Hellickson and notes that teams like the Rays, Twins, Marlins and Brewers could all be intrigued by Davis.' There's a prevailing theme to these kind of rumors...that being, if we are tied to a MLB player in a rumor, he's an inexpensive buy low player.
  5. For those who didn't know the Twins still have a rotation, all they need to do is go look at team starting pitching stats, and look at the bottom of the list for pretty much every important stat. That's where you'll find them.
  6. Dozier is playing exceptional defense and has an OPS+ over 100. I'll take that from a MI...especially someone who hasn't even hit his prime yet and is just getting accustomed to the major leagues.
  7. A team's goal should always be to utilize all avenues to improve their team every chance they get, no matter what....even if they did well the year before. After the 2006 season, instead of identifying problems and aggressively trying to fix them, they dumpster dove for talent. After the 2010 season, they gutted their MI and bullpen and did nothing to improve the team. It's like in both scenarios they expected everything to go the same way it had the year before and said, we can absorb the dropoff in talent cause we won so many games. They did this while other teams were trying to improve their teams....and yet people were surprised about 2007 and 2011? I don't get that.
  8. I think Dozier has an exceptionally spectacular glove myself...he's fantastic out there. On top of that, all I saw was a rookie struggling, like most rookies tend to do. I never waivered from the belief he'd be a solid MLB player.
  9. okay, the poster threw a scenario out there as to why he wants to finish with a record that allows us to be in the top 10. All I did was ask him if he thought that scenario was something he could envision happening. If it isn't, then I was wondering why it'd even be brought up. He explained why he brought it up. It's like during the winter in North Dakota, there are many reasons not to go into the backyard in just your shorts. If I said one of many reasons, along with the cold, is that aliens may come down into my backyard and abduct me, well that's a reason...but it ain't likely..and one might ask why I mentioned it :-)
  10. Do you see that kind of scenario playing out? A scenario where someone turns down a contract worth close to 14M and then Terry Ryan signs him?
  11. What he's done while being primarily a catcher can't be taken away from him....and Carew's HOF chances weren't hurt by him moving to 1B. I get that Carew got the magic 3K hits, but is there much doubt he gets in anyway? I see both sides of the argument. I agree with some points on both sides.
  12. Not much different than Bert talking about his HOF playing days...and Richard talking about Bert's HOF playing days...
  13. For those expecting our top prospects to all be important parts of a quick rebuild, please read the article linked at the beginning of the thread.
  14. The day I root for the twins to lose is the day I stop being a Twins fan. I don't see that happening in my lifetime.
  15. The team decided to say goodbye to Justin as well. Take a look: The Twins say their video goodbyes to Justin Morneau - Twinkie Town
  16. yeah, I completely agree with Paul's post above. Gardy pushed for 'speed' at the position and he even said that Casilla will compete with Hardy for the shortstop spot, even before Hardy was traded. Gardy didn't want Hardy, Smith listened him...like he listened to Gardy a couple offseasons earlier when Gardy said signing Punto was the team's #1 priority and that he'd be the starting shortstop if signed.
  17. The Twins just did do that, with Pelfrey...in fact, signing one year bargain basement players is what we do best. It's scrap heap shopping, hoping for cheap gold. In any event, pointing to St Louis as the way for our team to do things (which is what he was doing) isn't going to work for a variety of reasons. We aren't going to trade quality FA for top quality players and then pony up to keep those players and we aren't going to pay for quality FA like Beltran. That's the way it is. So, we really need to be looking at the way TB does it, and just be better than we are at targeting the right cheap FA players.
  18. I'm sorry, that actually wasn't directed at you, you just happened to be the person who answered the question. I'm saying if a person advocates for not signing a quality FA because they'll end up paying for decline years, one might as well say that a team shouldn't sign quality FAs period because, based on the age of most FA and the years most quality FAs require, there are going to be some decline years...because when you get them, they are right at the end or past their 'prime' years.
  19. No, what I said on our discussion, is if you're going to say we should follow the St. Louis way of creating a team, which I think it a good way to follow, we need to not only build from within (which most teams do, BTW) we also have to be willing to trade good prospects for quality star players and then keep those players and we also need to go after quality FAs that cost more than bargain prices. That's how it works for them. In other words, we were talking about the St Louis way of doing things and you pointed out moves we did that were for bit players not star players, as a way to say we do the same thing. I didn't complain about anything...I was saying if we are going the St Louis way, we need to do everything St Louis does. I think we will stall at the trading good prospects for true quality players and keeping them part and the signing of true quality players in FA part. Might be better to say we should follow the TB or Oakland way, because that seems much more likely, even though we have way more funds than those teams.
  20. I think if you follow our conversation from the beginning to now, you'll see you've taken it way off course and are now making assumptions I've in no way presented. Not sure why, but it's happened. Anyway, I'm done with it.
  21. They'll probably take a good look at Ventura or Zimmer to replace Santana. Their cupboard is hardly bare..
  22. The Royals have positional talent already on the field...and they're young too. They should get nothing but better have started looking much more like what they are capable of doing offensively in the 2nd half. 4th in the AL in runs scored.
  23. Instead of saying things like this isn't rocket science, an apparent shot to my understanding of the game, why don't you answer the questions I asked? You used stats to back up your opinion, and I questioned them. Why not just answer the questions instead of taking a shot?
