  1. I'm going to guess Willingham, Doumit and Carroll will be the answers while leaving out we lost Kubel, Cuddy and Nathan in the same offseason. :-) Willingham, our biggest FA signing ever. Oh wait, tjhose weren't complimentary pieces while we were competitive, so I don't know..
  2. In this case, there's been quite a few sources though. It still makes no difference. Short of having blind faith in a person's abilities, one looks at all the info available to try and form an informed opinion as to their performance.
  3. I'm not smart enough to understand that post...wanna dumb it down a bit maybe with less sarcasm? Are you saying Gardy, as the manager of the team, is quite short of Ryan saying it?
  4. apparently there will be a lot more free agents when we're ready to compete :-) You know, in that year...
  5. Even if he did come out and say it verbatim, it wouldn't matter... example? When he said he'd do everything possible to significantly improve this year's rotation.
  6. exactly...part of the answer...but that's harder to argue against than the extreme end of the spectrum. Just like expecting them to spend 100M isn't the same as expecting them to compete with the Dodgers and Yankees for spending...
  7. So the argument every year will be lack of free agents available...that's a convenient argument.
  8. Do you mean the lack of free agents within some preconceived price range we set for ourselves?
  9. If we take normal national inflation into account, we are below 2007 payroll. Without knowing for sure, I believe players' salaries have increased more than the national inflation rate.
  10. People expect the Twins to improve the product on the field by all means available instead of decreasing payroll two years in a row (and likely continuing the next two years)while we continue to stink. You take it to extreme to make your point when no one is arguing the extreme. No one that I've seen in here expect us to have payroll in the mid 100s.
  11. You make that sound like a lot....it's not. Not at all. Especially considering what's coming off the books and especially considering it'll probably be divided by 3 or 4 players. We need quality, not a bunch of bargain basement blue-light special players. as far as free agent expectations...SOME people expect the Twins to improve the product on the field by all means available instead of decreasing payroll two years in a row (and likely continuing the next two years)while we continue to stink. You take it to extreme to make your point when no one is arguing the extreme. No one that I've seen in here expect us to have payroll in the mid 100s.
  12. Well, in terms of FA, 'almost 50M' over two years isn't a lot and it's even less impressive when looking at who we lost in FA and how many players that almost 50M was divided into. In other words, if you look at the whole picture. And yes, a very good argument could be made that Ryan has been responsible in his spending rather than cheap over the last two years...but only if 'responsible' involves significantly cutting payroll and not getting anyone to truly improve the major league team as we endured a second and third carpy season.. Other than that...
  13. I think his scouting skills are top notch. I think he did a very good job of building a competitive team on a budget during a time he needed to (his first stint as GM). I think he trades pretty well for the most part, though every GM has his hits and misses. I don't think he does well on getting free agents. I think he sticks too tightly to the idea that X player is worth X amount and X years and I'm not going to pay more or give more years. I also don't think he's very honest to the fans, which I have a problem with but I've been told it's not important. That's just to start and those are just my opinions. Whether or not they are true, I have no clue.
  14. I'm not sure how those two compare. Many don't like the win-loss stats for pitchers because it doesn't take into account the defense or offense of that pitcher's team. It takes a whole team to win or lose, not just the pitcher. In the case of TEAM win-losses, the GM creates the TEAM. The manager manages what the GM gives him. So the win-loss record reflects the GM's abilities much more directly...cause he created the TEAM that is winning or losing.
  15. Actually, my gut didn't tell me anything of the sort in regards to this...in fact, my original point wasn't to discredit his post, but to ask for more info so we could see where Ryan stood compared to other teams, whether that is front of the line, back of the line , or somewhere in the middle. I had no idea, which is why I ask. My gut told me that if one is going to say he's done a good job at something one should at least compare it to what others have done in the same amount of time before just stating he's done a very good job at it. I don't think it's out of bounds to ask for the info. We compare players stats all the time, why not GM moves...especially when certain moves are brought up as a way to say someone was good or bad? When he turned around and said he hadn't even looked, well, how do we know how Ryan has done compared to other teams in this regard, then? For me, there are things he does well, there are things he doesn't. I don't have a blanket opinion.
  16. All I was saying is if one is to draw conclusions based on the info you threw out there, one would also have to look at how all the other teams have done in that regard over the same time frame that Ryan has been GM and compare. Just pointing out 9 guys over 15 years as GM doesn't give us anything to rate it against.
  17. How do you think that compares to other teams? I'd think this info, while certainly interesting, doesn't tell us much unless compared to how other teams do in the same situation.
  18. I think he might be frustrated that some people consistently get away with making snide comment after snide comment (ironically by supposed 'positive' people) while others gets warnings right away (either by email or chastised right on the thread itself) for posts that are nowhere near as rude or even disrespectful.
  19. Well first we have to remember that this is a job to the players and the players know it's a long season. I would hope that, as a professional, they wouldn't run the extreme gamut of emotions after every win and every loss. Just because a professional doesn't throw a temper tantrum when the team loses, doesn't mean he doesn't care that they lost.
  20. If they had a quote from Ryan himself saying it, it still wouldn't matter.
  21. That's not a Correia thing, that's a Twins thing...they all do that most of the time.
  22. just joking with you, buddy...I got your point :-)
  23. There's like a 7 month difference in ages between Sano and Buxton :-)
  24. I want to take this post out for a nice steak dinner and get it liquored up :-)
