    The spin rate, to me is why Gonsalves is such an intriguing prospect. The backspin on his fastball has induced some incredibly weak contact. For example he allowed 190 fly ball outs last year, of which 42 were pop ups (22.1%). Compared to just 3 homers. He must have crazy rise on the pitch. How much batted ball regression can you expect from a guy like that? If anything, with our outfield defense, maybe it goes the other way once he reaches MLB (at least the WHIP portion).

    They were both moved off the position because of the errors. Polanco before Santana. But we're talking about one guy like he's a viable option for the big league club and laughing about Reusse's sugggestion that the other guy ought to be considered too. I agree that Santana's bat makes it kind of a pointless distinction but just though the record should be set straight- Polanco's as bad (or nearly). If Santana's glove isn't good enough to play MLB-caliber shortstop, than neither is Polanco's. The natural solution IMO is to get Polanco some OF reps in preparation for taking over DanSan's utility role, with Escobar taking over SS. He's the only guy in the system (except maybe the Ahemfluenza guy) with enough glove for it.

    For the record, Santana was less of an E machine at SS than Polanco in the minors, although it was very close. He also had more range.

    He was an outstanding fielder. And he pitched so fast, I wonder how much of his success was disrupting the normal rhythm batters are used to. Consistently the fastest pace in baseball.

    At the very least it seems strange that Sano would say he lost 15 pounds and is now 271, when last year at this time he was 263, according to Lavelle.

    This is what I hope happens this year. The Twins face two lefties in a row. The Red Sox or White Sox. Mauer sits in game one. Sano, Vargas, and Grossman (or whoever) crush the lefty and carry the Twins to victory. Next game, Mauer expects to play, Molitor expects Mauer to play- because they discussed. But Sano, Vargas, and (?) third guy expect to play too. Molitor picks one of them to sit in game two to make room for Mauer- Sano maybe, for some flimsy reason. What Molitor doesn't know is Sano had to put down his dog that morning, and Sano is in no mood. Sano gets in his face, they get into it. Molitor loses, Mauer loses, Sano stays in the lineup and goes 3-5 with a bomb. Twins win. The torch is passed.

    How would a re-draft look? Maybe 1. Rodon 2. Turner 3. Conforto 4. Finnegan 5. Gordon? 6. Pentecost?

    Berrios "hung" a lot of his fastballs to the arm side last year when his body got in front of his arm. A shorter arm path could help. But sometimes its psychological (nerves) that cause a guy to rush through his windup. Injury or fatigue is another possibility. I just hope the Twins aren't overcoaching him. He didn't walk many before he reached the majors.

    Gordon's .346 BA in the AFL came in 81 PAs that included no homers, 2 triples, 4 doubles and 22 singles. His IsoP was less than .100. Compared to the rest of his minor league career it looks like he probably got a good number of lucky base hits.

    We called them carmel (car-mul) rolls. My aunt makes a mean one with melted butter/sugar being the "carmel."

    Is Vielma's D as good as everyone thinks? Or are people applying Nichols law of catcher defense to the shortstop? Looked it up- Vielma has a .952 FP in 3000+ innings with a 4.70 RF/9. Gordon: .960 FP in 2300 innings with a 4.60 RF/9 About a wash I'd say.

    That makes total sense to me. A lower arm angle was easier on my shoulder too. Gibson doesn't throw from a low angle- quite the opposite. And he's been battling shoulder trouble. We know there is a thought that tall sinkerballers need to throw with a downward plane. I worry that GIbson is fully bought into this, thus he is working on follow through when perhaps a lower slot would solve his problem.

    Is DanSan doing any infield work, or just outfield?

    I wonder if the extreme over the top delivery is a factor with the shoulder. I always found a lower three quarters delivery was easier on mine, but anti-thetical to the "downward plane" I guess.

    I think this is a fair analysis. "Solid, not spectacular" glove seems about right, based on his fielding / range numbers. One quibble I would have is that a .300 BA is kind of a tall order these days. BA has been falling for a few years leaguewide. I don't see him improving from a .285 into a .300 hitter between A ball and MLB unless he shaves that k-rate down to nothing. So what I'd like to see personally are more walks, and more homers.
