  1. I think there's a lot of truth to that. Current prices also push young people out of the market, which is not good for the long term viability of the hobby. Whenever I go to a card show it's all middle-aged men.
  2. My experience has been that only the pre-1980's stuff holds it's value. As far as new stuff is concerned, I'll buy a Twins set off of eBay each year and an occasional pack just to rip open for fun.
  3. Watched him outduel Roy Halladay on a sweltering day in Philadelphia. He was on that day. The Phillies had zero hard contact.
  4. There's clearly a lot of confusion within ownership and the front office. They went big with Correa, and then backtracked a few years later. Did they completely miss on TV revenue projections? Were they expecting attendance to bounce back? Now all of the sudden they have money to spend again (relatively speaking). Would they have traded Duran if the front office had more insight into the potential budget? Based on the timing of how things went down last summer, ownership clearly knew that new minority partners were coming on board to help with the debt situation before the trade deadline. None of it makes any sense.
  5. Interesting, although I don't know how long you can hide someone with those kinds of offensive numbers on your bench. At some point he will have to hit in key situations. I get that a glove-first utility guy will generally not be a good hitter, but not this bad.
  6. For $10 million a year I would still take Arraez over Josh Bell any day of the week. I'm curious to see what contract he eventually ends up with. He's a difficult player to judge.
  7. What the hell is the plan for this organization? They traded Duran for magic beans, presumably because they didn't want to take him through arbitration. But now they somehow have enough money to shovel $7 million on Josh Bell?
  8. This just reinforces how bad the Duran trade was.
  9. $40 million for two years. Wow. The silly season is underway.
  10. The Pirates m.o. is to make half hearted attempts at acquiring big name free agents with the knowledge they have no shot. Then they tell their fan base how hard they tried to land someone.
  11. Question: Are the Twins allowed to take someone even though the 40 man is full? Can they take someone and then clear a space?
  12. I think teams should be able to trade all of their draft picks. It would benefit small market clubs. Paying a $5 million bonus to a draft pick who has long odds of being a regular MLB contributor is a poor use of resources. They could trade that pick for "almost ready" prospects making league minimum.
  13. I immediately thought Duran, but now I 'm not so sure. I don't think he ever wore that uniform combination.
  14. Agreed (not the generosity part). There's an infinite number of ways they could have structured this. It could be some kind of preferred stock that pays them a guaranteed dividend, or maybe it's just straight equity. Sports teams have generally proven to be a good investment over time.
  15. As I suspected, the investors are just Wall Street types looking for a place to stash money.
  16. I sincerely wish that they keep Ryan, Lopez, and Buxton. I don't believe in rebuilds. They rarely amount to anything but a decade of misery. There is talent on this team. Ownership and the front office owe it to the fans to build around what they have and field a competitive product, no matter the payroll.
  17. Given who's on the roster at the moment, this all seems about right, for better or worse. A lot of guys who shouldn't be on a major league roster, but it is what it is. I might quibble about the bullpen. I think they find a spot for Adams. His overall results were bad, but there were moments where he flashed some good stuff and there is enough to build on. The infield is downright depressing.
  18. "It was the worst season of Lowe's career, and it may drop him into the Twins' price range." That sentence sums up the current state of the Twins.
  19. Some of the other stories on this development are not clear. They make it sound like you have to subscribe to ESPN first and then buy an add on.
  20. Nick: To be clear, I gave your article a thumbs up for the reporting and analysis and not because I like the implications of what Falvey is suggesting. Yuck. Clemens has his moments, but he is not the starting first baseman for a contending club. I do concur though that if the alternative is someone like Ty France then might as well be Clemens. The bar is that low
  21. There may be demand for everyday outfielders, but apart from Buxton I don't think any of the Twins outfielders fit that bill. And even Buxton has question marks because of his injury history. I think the Twins will trade some outfielders, but it will be more about clearing roster space. I don't expect they would receive any meaningful pieces in return.
