  1. Would the offseason have been a disaster without Correa? With or without Correa I don't think they're done making moves, so time will tell. I was disappointed they missed out on some SP opportunities in free-agency, but the need may be filled via trade. I still think they need one middle of the rotation SP and one decent reliever. Did we absolutely need a shortstop? We needed someone, whether it was Correa or a stop-gap to get us to Lewis/Lee/Martin. I would have been content with the latter, and so I wouldn't judge the offseason a disaster if Correa had gone elsewhere. I like Correa and I think he makes them better, but going forward I don't think he's going to be the elite player some expect him to be. I like $200 million over six years better than $285 million over ten, but that's still A LOT of money to tie up in one player. (Can you tell I'm a glass half-empty kind of person.)
  2. I don't think they have a glut of infielders. Farmer is insurance if Miranda can't lock down 3rd and can also play SS if needed. I view Gordon more as an outfielder, but certainly he brings a lot of valuable versatility.
  3. Guess we'll just have to trust the scouts on this one. Someone must see something they like. Although I'm as little suspicious of anyone DFA'd by one of the worst teams in baseball.
  4. Am glad someone said this. Donaldson doesn't belong in the same sentence as Bauer.
  5. The years absolutely do matter. A dollar today is worth more than a dollar 13 years from now because of inflation and opportunity cost of money (he can invest and earn a rate of return on that dollar he gets today). The Twins deal (reportedly) was less nominal dollars, but it was over fewer years so it was presumably more front loaded. So he may have gotten more money up front than the Mets deal. Depending on how you discount the dollars, the Mets deal might still be slightly higher than the Twins deal , but it's not $30 million in real terms. And when you're dealing with that amount of money, the difference is essentially a wash.
  6. Not if you put it in discounted present value terms. The Mets deal was spread over more years. Of course, it's all about the optics of being over $300 million. Whenever they announce the deal with the Mets, even if it ends up being less than $300 million there will be all kinds of clauses and options so that one might conclude, under the best circumstances, it's over $300 million.
  7. If Correa wanted to be a Twin he would still be a Twin. The Twins alleged offer wasn't that different from the Mets offer.
  8. No way would I include young pitching. I get you gotta give something to get something, but the Twins have no established starters under contract after this year. They need to keep all of their arms.
  9. I love Target Field, and I enjoy watching Twins baseball, but 3 hours for a run-of-the-mill nine inning game is just too long. If you include the time to drive to the stadium and park, it's easily a 4+ hour commitment. On a weeknight that's too much to ask of even the most hard core fans. Hopefully some of the rule changes will help make the game length shorter and more predictable.
  10. He had some good moments. Being able to bring him back on a minor league deal is a good get.
  11. In today's market Kevin Correia would probably get $100 million over four years .
  12. There will be a reckoning in the next couple years. The RSNs are getting hit hard by cord cutting, and many teams will see their largest revenue source dry up. Of course, Cohen could probably care less. When you have that much money it doesn't matter.
  13. Maybe, although if Cohen is not dissuaded by a 90 percent luxery tax I doubt he gives a damn what the Steinbrenner's think. Rich people are weird.
  14. Because if there is an issue they should have known about it. He presumably had a physical when he signed last year and I assume his health status was monitored throughout the year. The media reports indicate it is an old injury. I'm not saying they shouldn't back away. I'm not a fan of a long term deal for him in the first place. But one could conclude two other teams caught something the Twins didn't. Or maybe the Twins just don't think it's an issue. .
  15. Let's say, for the sake of argument, that he does circle back to the Twins. Do they still do $185 million over ten? They of all the teams, should know the most about his physical condition. They would look pretty foolish if they suddenly backed off.

  18. It will be interesting to see what the plan is. Are they really that confident in Miranda? Signing another third baseman would make no sense in light of the decision to move on from Urshela. The only thing that would make sense is if the Twins acquire another decent utility type if Miranda struggles or Farmer gets hurt. Someone who can play SS or 3B.
  19. Polanco's "down year" was still pretty good. He was worth 2.8 WAR in only 375 at bats.
  20. Good write up. You come as close as anyone in convincing me why this was a good move, but I'm still not there. This signing seems like such a mismatch relative to their needs.
  21. It seems to convey an air of desperation by the Giants....."We gotta sign somebody!"
  22. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/12/giants-taylor-rogers-agree-to-three-year-deal.html Good for him! Although for that money, I'm fine with the Twins taking a pass. View full rumor

  24. No. No. No. People make mistakes, and I'm not opposed to second chances, but Bauer has a history of questionable behavior. It's not just one incident. He would be an unwelcome distraction. There is also the question of whether he's really that good of a pitcher.
