  1. Last year C/1B/DH was Mauer/Morneau/Doumit. This year it's Mauer/Suzuki/Kubel. I would not call odds "pretty good" that this group outproduces last year. Some of that depends on how long it's Suzuki/Kubel and not Pinto/Arcia but right now it looks like at least a decent chunk of the season will start that way.
  2. The comp still works because plenty of 50-100 ranked prospects could turn into Puntos.
  3. Possibly, but we have seen roster moves by this team in the past that overlook youth for veterans. So I'm not as confident.
  4. Anyone have a clue what the Sox are looking for in return? That sort of makes or breaks this for me.
  5. I'd have been much more ok with it if we didn't have the marginal/mediocre guys already signed. As I said, if you want to hand away a draft pick and some money - why not help the offense instead at this point? Seems like the wrong allocation of resources to me.
  6. I mentioned Saunders because reports are that the Twins are asking about him too. So it's not like they are just targeting a good SP here, they're still targeting SP in general. Blackburn is involved because there seems to be a flippant belief that you can just trade anyone you want as soon as they aren't a fit anymore. That's not always the case.
  7. Wasn't Blackburn still a misuse of resources? I'm not saying Santana necessarily pushes it over, but at some point you aren't allocating resources effectively any more. Having 4 guys under contract for several years into the future does create this potential risk and it does create a backlog of available positions. Afterall, it wasn't like we said "Blackburn's bad, let's stop starting him" - we gave him almost 20 starts at a near 7 ERA!!!
  8. At some point adding guaranteed contracts and 40 man spots starts to work against a rebuild too. Had this been Santana over Pelfrey - hell yeah. But what are they going to do? Have Saunders and Santana join and do a 7 man rotation? You reach a threshold at which point "more" no longer helps enough to warrant the commitment. I think, for 2014, we're there for SP.
  9. Unfortunately though, that velocity hasn't aided him in missing bats. You're right though, it's not a terrible thing to have a guy like that around. But let's not fool ourselves about what depth he represents - emergencies only.
  10. But see, you're a reasonable person. You see Johnson for what he is and you can see that the team's timeline has been setback. I, and many others I'm sure, have no problem with optimism. It's optimism with no room for valid criticism that leaves rational discussion behind and turns discussions around. The team has had setbacks. The roster starting 2014 is not what we optimistically (and realistically) had hoped for a few years ago. Hell, it's not even what most of us were optimistic we'd see right now in the middle of the summer last year. It's discouraging and it's valid to be discouraged. Now hopefully a guy like Johnson or Gilmartin or Colabello or Parmelee (spelled that sucker right too!) surprises the heck out of us this season and we get some things to hold on to.
  11. I don't know why I even try. But I'll try one more time: Nick Blackburn sat in AA for two seasons making a lot of money. Other guys have this happen throughout their careers as well. There are many factors that make guys untradeable (Santana himself went dirtcheap to the Royals because of production issues). Had this been the move a month or two ago, without Pelfrey, I think it's easier to get behind. He's a good pitcher and a good target, but at this point the Twins are starting to create roster issues now and going forward out of desperation. There are a finite number of spots on your 40 and your 25 you can devote to pitchers. At some point enough is enough.
  12. I'm no Drew fan, but if you're going to hand out a contract like this and give up a pick....then I'd be willing to sign on for him. I don't think adding more pitching right now helps this team. It's also a lot of guaranteed roster spots being given for the next few years when there are (hopefully) pitching prospects on the way. You can't always plan on trading these guys either because injuries/poor performances/lack of need can squeeze the market and you're stuck with the money and the guy when you have better alternatives. I'm kind of glad this wasn't a good fit.
  13. I think this year Kepler catapults back into high regard in this system. No basis for that other than my infatuation with his build/skillset.
  14. Right, probably behind Gilmartin and Darnell at AAA much less as far as the Twins go this year. John's right, not a difference maker but probably not a bad option to have in your system.
  15. I think it speaks well of him that St. Louis was interested and 20M isn't a backbreaking gamble. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out.
  16. They just handed a ton of money to Griffin today. That should further narrow our targets in the first round to LB, CB, and QB.
  17. Unfortunately yes.....ours. I'm sure you will be more than happy to discard these "treasures" with the rest of us when (if) our young talent develops.
  18. The 91 Twins made me a baseball lover. The mid 90s tested that and it persists still. That does not, however, lead me to the notion that Johnson is "crazy depth. It doesn't mKe me slap lipstick on the pig that many of the guys a year ago we were realistically projecting to be full time contributors are likely not to break camp with the team. Or the disappointment in the developments with Rosario and Sano. Love doesn't entail slapping a blindfold on to ignore the flaws. It's hard as a diehard Twins fan to stare at the pile of dead-end garbage this roster looks to be the first two months and feel excited.
  19. Then that's sad. They should be based on who has the best chance to help this team now and going forward. Not who has the most veteran presence or how many split-squad walk-on types they retired in a meaningless game. We've already had our acting General Manager all but confirm Gibson doesn't have a shot at breaking camp with the team. Teams with three straight 90+ loss seasons shouldn't be so quick to lock anyone into a spot nor lock anyone out of a spot if there is upside to be had.
  20. Maybe they see a guy in the 2nd/3rd round and Cassel is a placeholder. I will say this, if you don't like the guys in this draft don't force it like Ponder. The franchise needs to go forward, unlike how Ponder set us back three years.
  21. I feel like claiming spring training starts are genuine chances is a lot like claiming chatting to a woman online counts as a date. ST Is largely meaningless. Lets keep this quote in perspective for what it is - a stupid excuse. It doesn't change that Worley has been a better pitcher three years ago than any of our other staters (save one) has ever been. One ST doesn't change that.
  22. There is also the ultimatum the EU/USA gave Ukraine to join that may have forced some of these events. I get the feeling we have slowly and subtely been working to further reduce Russian power and influence and this one backfired. PUtin said enough, decided to flex some muscle, and our government looks weak as a result.
  23. Even, on the remote chance, that it is true....you still don't say that. You just don't.
  24. I'll still have hockey to watch through the bulk of June right?
  25. This is a great take.....no when are we going to start doing it? The Twins have always taken the "All or Nothing" approach with young players and their at-bats. That's part of the problem. It's possible that your take is right (I believe so) and that jorgen can be also. It's the Twins that seem to disagree with that model unfortunately.
