  1. I would very much disagree with the idea that culture can't change out of violence/war. One stark example would be Japan. I'm not saying that's the solution, I just disagree with the notion that the aftermath of war/violence can't produce a cultural shift for the better.
  2. OPS should be in more regular use for sure.
  3. 86 wins is my guess as well.
  4. Say whatever you want about them, but they are a plucky bunch. They have no business being here and refuse to go away. That's a great thing for our young cornerstones to experience.
  5. Doing nothing about catcher Populating our roster with more 30 something also-rans
  6. I thought it was a fine start, not eye-popping but engaging. I wouldn't hold on to the hope of hearing about the virus' start. Kirkman has repeatedly stated that he has no interest in exploring that angle.
  7. I'm watching the second viewing right now.
  8. More accurate is a pretty odd claim when we're talking about simulated possible futures. It's not just a lack of precision, it's that the whole concept is dressed up with accuracy at all. Or taken seriously in that regard. Any better accuracy than eyeballing it is nebulous at best.
  9. I think you're missing the point. Eyeballing the standings would probably lead one to rank teams similarly in terms of chances, without any of the silly pretense of "accuracy".
  10. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-laPHjy0704U/T0qJc6NMzzI/AAAAAAAAA2o/SyN4FXNu03I/s1600/take-it-with-a-grain-of-salt.jpg
  11. Whew. Good thing I never said they were invalidated either! Can we be done with the strawmen now? The point is simple - people don't realize how small a sample most scouts have of the players they profile and should read those reports with a larger grain of salt than they do.
  12. I said it was another small piece of evidence. And it is. And, yes, most people do put far too much stock into these reports. It took two years of near incompetence by Hicks in the OF before anyone would even mention publicly that he wasn't as good as advertised. People talk about reports with phrases like "we know he'll bring good defense" or "we know he'll take walks" or "we know he has plus stuff". I would suggest the majority of people that cite these reports don't take them with nearly the grain of salt they should.
  13. Good thing no one did that. Plenty of places you can go for evidence of this issue, start with Delmon Young fielding reports. Those always give me a chuckle.
  14. It can be both later than we'd have liked and still a fine move now.
  15. They are less than three games out with plenty of time. How can anyone think this is strange? They added a competent arm for the last month. Hopefully it helps.
  16. Gutty effort this inning against a tough reliever.
  17. Even moreso when all you see is a handful of games most of the time. National scouting services aren't exactly employing a guy to sit and watch a team every game. The future is extremely difficult to predict, infinitely moreso when you only see the future potential 6-10 times a year.
  18. Santana deserved some rope, but it shouldn't be as extensive as someone like Rosario because the minor league track record doesn't support the success he had. If Rosario starts to struggle we have ample evidence to believe he can go back to being a good player. Santana has no such track record. After he proved to be one of baseball's worst for as long as he had (much like Hicks) it was time to send him down until he cleaned up his game and demonstrated success in the minors.
  19. More evidence for the idea that scouting reports of minor leaguers should be taken with a huge grain of salt. Most scouts just don't see enough of players. It's the ultimate over-reach based on small sample size and yet, somehow, everyone just takes these reports at face value.
  20. Dombrowski at 4 seems right to me. Most of the cringeworthy moves are believed to be owner mandates and not really a reflection of Dombrowski.
  21. Didn't see this mentioned: Twins are 29-80 against the Yanks their last 109 meetings.
  22. I, for one, am thrilled with reading rainbow coming soon as well. For those with kids.
  23. No thanks. But I'd love to have Jed Hoyer or Mike Girsch, to name just two options.
  24. Your question sort of doesn't need to be answered. It's a fallacy. It's not up to anyone to prove that they could do it better in order to point out the mistakes being made. That is shifting the burden of proof in a really ridiculous way. Basically, if that's all you got, your argument can be reasonably ignored or dismissed.
