  1. Yup, once people start looking at the rates during their open enrollment it's going to put this issue right back at the forefront. And the Republicans have nothing to stand on. I hope the Dems are bold. Lay out what universal health care could look like. Don't run from saying the taxes will be higher, but emphasize how much money nearly every business and individual will gain from cutting out insurance.
  2. I will never understand why we use different baseballs. It's like apprenticing a tech on Microsoft and then handing them an Ipad when they get promoted. I just don't get it. (Great article! Helps with my concerns about a two pitch mix from the other night)
  3. That's true, but the party still needs to put certain issues at the forefront too. Each candidate may have to attack that a bit differently, but the overall platform matters. And I really don't think the other moral issues matter. In fact, I think some of the attention on those issues galvanizes his support rather than erodes it.
  4. Quite true. Kepler and Mauer and helping too, but those two guys are absolutely on fire.
  5. I agree on much of what you said. 40% of the country would sooner vote for Hitler than Trump 40% of the country would sooner vote for Trump than Hitler (by which I of course mean Hillary Clinton in their eyes) The other 20% is what matters. What issues swung them? I think immigration and healthcare are the top two. The Dems should focus on his failures at both and tout their own solutions to both. That and take back the farm vote. They went Trump's way and he just royally screwed them...there is another prong to attack. But Stormy Daniels? Hush money? Abortions? Divorce while in office? Meh. That won't sway the 20% Hit them on the hot button issues.
  6. The kid is literally carrying us back into relevancy this season. If not for him we might be done in early May.
  7. These last two nights should be a reminder that Robbie Grossman can hit at the major league level. He is a valuable bench bat. Why he suddenly developed a phobia of catching baseballs I have no idea. Let's hope that is in the past.
  8. That's why you have to hit where it hurts.....the wall.
  9. Very true, I hadn't considered how this will stretch him out more than he is accustomed to. But, unfortunately, there's only one way to prepare for that and that's just to do it. It's nice to feel like we have some pitching depth to call on for the rotation though, if that does happen.
  10. I think that's the new thinking in baseball. Arms have a clock and every pitch thrown in MiLB is one less you get at the big league level before injury/wear & tear reduce effectiveness. I don't see any reason why they can't work with him to get better at the major league level.
  11. Fair enough....I guess I meant he'll probably need a third pitch with a bit more of a difference. Then again, we've seen some really good pitchers have success with a few dominant pitches. I just tend to think a high-end starter needs one more. And he has so many ingredients otherwise to be brilliant. (Or maybe he has it and just didn't have command of it to throw tonight, I don't know. We're only two starts in to watching this kid)
  12. I don't think anyone is arguing you can't have a better chance. What I think the contention is, is that great baseball teams (or ones with significantly superior talent relative to their opposition) are FAR more vulnerable than they are in basketball or football. No matter how many mercenaries you pull in to improve your chances. I'll still be in favor of the team doing smart things to push into the playoffs. I look at it like this: Back in the 2000s run we had two trade possibilities that illustrate my view. We had Cliff Lee for Aaron Hicks/+ and Alfonso Soriano for Scott Baker/Jason Kubel/+. One of those (Lee) I think would've been a wise move. The other (Soriano) I hope the team never engages in. One increases your chances significantly at a relatively low cost to your chances going forward. The other is a mortgage of the future for a relatively slim improvement to the present. I think smart teams know when the present gamble is worth the future one. In the past we were far too reluctant, but I don't want us to be far too trigger happy either.
  13. He's probably going to need a third pitch....but man does he have life on the two he throws. Is it true what the broadcast said that he's only allowed 7 HRs in his entire professional career?
  14. Thatsjust absurd.
  15. Sure, but he also didn't seem to have his hair on fire either. They probably feel like he needs to be in better playing shape, which is not the same as a bi-monthly gasp-fest about Miguel being "X weight we pulled out of thin air".
  16. I'm not sure this is a true statement. I've seen plenty of heavy thumbs do nothing and plenty of thumbs have an impact. I've also seen some minimal/no thumb teams do it. I'm not sure your generalization is accurate at all.
  17. If Luis Severino doesn't count as an "ace", we're going to go down an entirely different rabbit hole. One can say "Baseball depends a lot on luck" and still also say "You can do things to give yourself a better chance" They aren't mutually exclusive. But don't think that adding Verlander guarantees anything. The Dodgers have been fielding the best pitcher any of us will ever see for almost a decade and have routinely been bounced in the first round time and time again. Over 162 games we find out who the best teams are. In the playoffs we find out who was the best team in October. Those two outcomes are rarely the same thing.
  18. I appreciate what Falvey said. It sounds like the team is less concerned about particular weight numbers but on having his body ready to play. Smart and fair.
  19. I don't think I know anywhere near that much about Byron Buxton or Miguel Sano by watching them on TV or by sitting in the stands. To make bold claims like that about who they are as a person just doesn't sit well with me. Though I appreciate how direct you are about it. Most of the teeth gnashing in threads like this is how many people are thinking the same thing, but are hiding behind other arguments to say it.
  20. Cleveland's offense may just be so "meh" it doesn't matter how well they pitch. Before the season I thought they were a tad overrated for that reason (and said as much). They might still turn it around, but they aren't the juggernaut many think IMO. And if they start trending the wrong way every significant member of their bullpen, Brantley, and Chisenhall might all be on their way out.
  21. The ball jumps off his bat. He has surprising power to all fields.
  22. Good win with a tougher stretch coming up. The teams we're about to play are not like these tanking White Sox.
  23. Grossman in the field again? Get the Benny Hill music ready....
  24. Cole and Cobb were my favorite starters to acquire this offseason. Do they cancel each other out?
  25. It's more the amount of time being spent on it relative to more effective attacks. I disagree about pragmatic democrats. The problem with Clinton, Gore, and Kerry was a total absence of personality. Obama was a very pragmatic President. That didn't hold him back.
