  1. And my issue with the brainwashing is that guys like Hannity, Levin, Beck, Alex Jones, and Limbaugh have slowly eroded the value of truth on the right to such a degree that it's largely irrelevant for much of the Republican voting bloc. And I would cite some of the responses to Trump's personal behavior as a damning bit of evidence to that effect.
  2. I didn't say it was representative. I cited it as an example. Is there any parallel on the left? I think the answer is clearly "no" and they are but one example of many. And I take issue that this has been "delineated" in any accurate way. Bias is a nebulous concept prone to individual definitions. If you are going to get petty with Cheif's assessment, it's only fair to play that game both ways. Personally, I'd prefer we didn't try to split "who is left and who is right" among the media. It's a losing battle. There are people, on the right, who think Shepard Smith and Neil Cavuto are "lefties". There is no upside in that discussion's details. I would agree that the major networks are not right-wing. I would not call them left-wing either though. The only major networks I see explicit bias on are MSNBC and Fox. After that? It depends how far off the right/left spectrum you are personally and that's a waste of time. So let's go back to what is interesting IMO.....is there anything like Infowars on the left? Or Hannity? Where truth is thrown so far out the window it's barely registering in the conversation and reaching millions of people? That's the brainwashing effect that the left does not have any equal for in scope for that level of severity.
  3. Well, I think the real issue is that Dozier is just really streaky. When he droughts....it's rough for long stretches. But when he pours it on....it's Ruthian. I'm not sure there is really a pattern beyond that.
  4. How can I argue with someone who uses terms like "way more" and then dismisses another poster for being too anecdotal. Pretty rich right there. The very nexus of the problem is in your last line though. When was the last time the Republicans represented limited government and liberty? The brainwashing lies right there. They have convinced millions of people that they're fighting for something that couldn't be farther from the truth. Instead, Republican actions often undermine the very interests they claim to fight for. And they've got people layered in so many levels of hypocrisy and contradiction it's straight up madness. No one spins like the right-wingers do. Info-wars is listened to by millions. MILLIONS. And that's just the tip of the spear. You can list all the examples of right vs. left and get into a debate about what qualifies as what....but it's not the frequency that matters. It's the depth of the craziness and the number of listeners/viewers it has. And the right destroys the left on that front. And is far, far, far more removed from the truth in the process. And yeah...this place gets too echo-chambery. No one has the guts to post anything interesting because everyone wants to make sure they get liked. It is boring. It's one of the reasons I prefer to sample my opinion and news more widely. And, yes, the left is annoying. Really annoying. Often painfully annoying. But they're not nearly as scary or insidious.
  5. The Republicans have been brainwashing at elite levels for a long, long time now. Though, their success is in part due to the kind of people they attract. Old, disgruntled, poorly educated white folks seem really keen on conspiracies.
  6. That was a nice thing to flip the TV on to.
  7. I'm not sure I buy that Dozier's OBP or BB rate is tied to being pitched around. His best year for taking walks was long before the home run binge started. He's been long overdue to hit lower in the lineup IMO, this might be the best time to make that move.
  8. Hey....remember that time we played "Before" and "After" during spring training before pictures even came out? Yeah. Fun times.
  9. Right, but right now we do have a system where every half-wit can get into college so long as they can put pen to a FAFSA. And that reality started snow-balling with left-wing policy. Not everything government touches fails, but some of it does. Unfortunately, we don't have a party right now who represents that radical notion.
  10. Right, the Rock'sy 260 and Miguel's 260 and the dude at Burger King every day for lunch's 260 are not the same thing. Which is why BMI is kooky-dukes. I'm clearly being forced to watch Moana too often is what I just realized from typing that paragraph.
  11. Maybe not a full firesale...but I could see them blowing up that bullpen. But yes, you're right, it would be shocking. But shocking teams sell off at the deadline every year, let's hope it's our top rival this time,
  12. I think that's the key. We need the government to say "We will allocate X amount of money" but then put a TON of conditions on it. As in, "yes, you can charge more than X...but only by Y% or we pull all funding" and "you must spend X amount of your budget on faculty (or only X on athletics)" Right now colleges are getting a blank check that taxpayers are paying for, along with 18 year olds who pay them for the rest of their lives. And then the colleges spend that on spas for their basketball teams, replacing a three year old science building, and funding a bloated administrative staff. That system is so badly broken, it may take major intervention (more than I typically am a fan of) to fix it. So yeah...just like health care. Too broken for the market to fix at this point. It'll take heavy regulation, negotiation, and rules to get it back to some semblance of sanity. The only way the Dems turn that into a winning issue is to talk about how this is de-coupling taxpayers from the largesse of universities. But that's a hard sell....and one I would rather the Dems not try.
  13. Well, do you see them resigning Cody Allen and Andrew Miller? I'm not saying a sell-off is likely, but the guys coming up on free agency are the types you might be able to get a lot for at the deadline if you see yourself as out of serious contention.
  14. Last year the Indians caught fire, but I'm just not sure they have the offensive firepower to do it again. And if they aren't a clear playoff threat....do they start selling off some of their guys due for FA?
  15. I will say Chief, Psuedo is right that the days of "want to go to college? Pay for it" are a thing of the past. Colleges have priced that out of reality. But I also blame the left for that which speaks to your first point. I don't see how the government handing free money to colleges is going to solve the problem. That's what started this steady descent into the disaster we have today.
  16. Hmmm....as an educator I am wary of the hope that most any kind of funding will be seen (rightly) as an investment. But I could get behind that term - it's accurate and less easily picked apart. Are you suggesting that the state pays for a certain number of students? As in, there is a hard cap on student enrollment at the university? Or a hard cap on total dollars? And, the more I think about those questions the more it leads me to ask.....how far down this road do we go before we have government controlled universities? A problem I would think any liberal, in the true sense of the word, would be hesitant about?
  17. The loans themselves are the crux of the problem IMO. I don't think you can do the first prong without completely revisiting the concept itself. Which I believe is necessary.
  18. And as I've pointed out....even when he was an All-Star and a successful player for this team, the articles were still coming out about his weight. Maybe not from you personally, but this issue doesn't disappear when he has a .900 OPS as you are suggesting. (And was suggested earlier)
  19. In fairness to Chief, he's talking practically. "Free Stuff" has never won the Democrats much either, the proposal needs to be smarter than that. Part of the reason (the main reason IMO) why the university system is so badly broken in the first place is a liberal idea of "let's just give it to everyone!" Let's not and be a bit more intelligent about that approach this time.
  20. BMI is ridiculous.
  21. I agree with your last sentence, we absolutely need a fix for that. (If I were President for a day we'd forgive all student loans and institute universal health care. Watch what the economy does when young, middle class people suddenly have an extra 1,000+ a month to spend) I'm a little more wary about what would happen if universities were funded by the states. I think it could just as easily become High School 2. That's just my pessimism on this subject speaking though. I've started to see the future of colleges as more and more bleak the last few years. They just might be too far gone for redemption. I'd lean more towards fully funding vocational schools and community colleges for awhile until we force the major universities to get away from advertising, athletics, and constant new construction on campus and back to what they were originally for - education. Maybe if we are siphoning a lot of their money away they'll be open to some major reforms. They can start by getting their tuition rates more in line with what they should be relative to inflation and not the gouging the saddle 18 year olds with on the promise of a degree that means less and less.
  22. Kris Bryant....a good human being and role model.
  23. Is Buxton in great shape? Might he be "too skinny" for the wear and tear of 162 games? I'm playing devil's advocate here a bit, but I think Kirby's point about the lack of consistency with the criticisms is really the key. LoMo is pudgy, but there aren't 6 threads about that. Fernando Romero isn't exactly the healthiest looking guy in the world either. And Glen Perkins? That dude relished being a fat guy in the offseason who didn't give a damn. Is it too much to ask for consistency?
  24. I wonder what he'll cost to retain. I don't think he's coming cheap.
  25. What do you mean by "universal education"?
