  1. You can't take someone asking him to rank his favorite thing to do and infer from that he doesn't value the other thing. Quick tell me your favorite family member so I can then tell you how much you don't value the other members of your family. I can give more examples of that really unfair logic, but I'd like to hope it's unnecessary.
  2. A couple things: 1) No one actually writes in cursive. The vast majority of people end up blurring their print and cursive into a near illegible amalgamation no one can effectively read anyway. 2) You can teach people to read cursive in a fraction of the time it takes to write it. 3) I see value in being able to read it. I see no value in being able to write with it. This will only continue to be the case as we move further and further away from wide-spread use of cursive writing in our interactions. 4) My opinion is only partially (read: almost entirely) due to how much I hate teaching it and how little value I find in it for my students. I teach my kids coding and give them experience with that. Every second I was forced to waste on cursive is time I could've invested in the many wonderful resources for early coding and problem solving that are out there.
  3. I've been critical of Buxton in this thread but I want to distance from this. I don't agree with taking personal shots at guys like Sano for what we assume to be their work habits and I won't do so about Buxton either. I'm not sure why he hasn't been able to build off success, but whatever the issue is....I won't assume it's because he doesn't care. I don't know the man and won't judge him that way. But I will continue to say he has to figure it out....whatever "it" is. The excuses are no longer valid, we're at about 1,000 ABs now and it isn't pretty. And there are no signs to be optimistic about either.
  4. Well, part of leadership is producing on the field and coming through for your team. There are off the field elements also, but if you're one of the players the team is relying on....you sorta need to be reliable at the plate. Right now Dozier is going on one of his famines and the team needs him to feast. Part of being a leader is stepping up to fill what the club needs from you. It's a perfectly fair criticism.
  5. I guess I'm skeptical he'd be used that way. If he became a 3-4 times a week guy who gives us 1-3 innings of high leverage relief....well alright then. I just have my doubts. Not necessarily because of Molitor or the FO or anything....I think I've just been beaten down on ever thinking the Twins will be ahead of the curve.
  6. Goalies tend to be a bit more erratic so it was a good gamble (no pun intended) by Vegas. But Pitt absolutely loved that they took him off their hands. Matt Murray took his job in the playoffs a few years back and he was basically a part-time goalie. He goes to Vegas and blows up. I'm with you about Dubnyk probably not being the right guy for this team.
  7. What if he could be more than an iffy starter? I'm not sure I'm sold on that characterization of his potential. (I know he's older, but he's also be foolishly yanked around)
  8. Let's be real here though....the Penguins were ecstatic to get rid of Fleury. He, arguably, hadn't been their number one goalie in quite some time. Tuch had serious issues with foot-speed. This is a classic case of putting spare parts together and somehow making a miracle out of it.
  9. June ain't much better. Drew Butera is a career .555 OPS player. That means Byron Buxton is playing about half his seasons at roughly Drew Butera production. I think I'm just done with the excuses until that changes.
  10. I thought Winnepeg was going to win it all after beating Nashville. Wow.
  11. His career OPS by month: April - .464 May - .600 June .546 July .739 August .818 September .853 I don't consider dreadful numbers for half of a season to be a "slow starter". The problems go well beyond that and the "slow starting" narrative really needs to end.
  12. It's ok to be pollyannaish as long as you're also willing to eat the crow later. I'm not sure you need to yet, but there is no question that Buxton's continued inability to build his profile as a hitter is very alarming. And injuries are not an excuse - they're part of the problem. I'm not writing them off yet, this team is capable of playing better baseball. But the big dogs have to start barking or it won't matter and Nick is spot-on about that.
  13. If I'm the Twins I pick one person, whomever that may be, and make that the only person Byron is allowed to talk to about his approach and give whatever tutelage is attempted a good, long try. But yeah, it'd be nice if he focused on being a line-drive hitter and not a boom or bounce-it-on-the-ground-and-pray swing all the time.
  14. I'm for pretty strict gun control. However, I don't think even strict gun control is going to stop the next event like this. I worry if we prop up that solution as being the "right solution" that the blow-back is going to make future gun control even more difficult to pass. I think it'd be wise to take a true bi-partisan approach. Be willing to enact ideas from the NRA along with gun control.
  15. It is kind of crazy that we're going to go without playing the Tigers until nearly June.
  16. There is so much natural talent, but the approach at the plate is baffling.
  17. Don't forget they also want to run everyone through metal detectors too. Metal detectors which I'm sure will be easily acquired with the hordes of money schools are sitting on for frivolous spending. This story also doesn't fit the narrative about "warning signs". That narrative has been false, of course, but this is yet another example. I know it isn't popular to say, but we're past any one solution working. We're going to have to do a host of things knowing there are no guarantees and we are likely to see repeats for awhile before the sum total of our responses start to make a difference. We can't wait for the magical "right solution", but let's also be honest that one probably doesn't exist.
  18. It's been really impressive. I've written them off and they just keep going.
  19. I can already feel the warming glow of "thoughts and prayers" that I'm sure, any day now, will fix everything.
  20. I saw this was written by one "J. Cameron" and figured it would be more of an alien "Dances with Wolves" rip-off. Or have some sweet acid spitting guys. Instead I found this insightful baseball analysis. Pfft.
  21. I probably wouldn't move Lewis. I'd explore all other avenues first.
  22. It's also possible that teams are just not that interested in trading a lot of assets for catchers. They do tend to have more variance in production and durability.
  23. I guess I haven't felt like all the moves the Marlins have made have demanded that kind of price level. I'm not saying you can get him cheap or anything, but I hope we explore the option. That franchise is a trainwreck, go see if you can claim some of the spoils.
