    Worrying about Colorado players is not unreasonable. However, Gray has a history that ranges from Average Pitcher to Stone Cold Bad Ass Pitcher. He is a bit erratic on that spectrum, but I don't see a single starter on the FA list with as much potential to make his contract look like a steal as he does.

    Jon Gray is not a "back end" starter by any rational use of that term. If someone of Gray's quality (and moderate upside) isn't good enough to be appealing I don't know what you think is reasonably possible to do.

    None, I think they'll have to eat about 7M for the next two years. That's still 18M a year to play with though. And yeah, if they Terry Ryan that money away it will be a terrible move.

    The Twins didn't have a ready to go 3B at the time IMO with Sano moving to 1B. Right now we have Miranda or Arraez as options, so to me the situation is a bit different.

    Donaldson has several ready replacements. The Twins have bigger needs 50M could be spent on IMO.

    The Braves so valued Rosario they waited until the absolute last minute of the deadline playing a game of "are you going to DFA him" chicken and only blinked when the price was 87 year old salary dump Pablo Sandoval.

    Agreed, they get credit for a genuine effort. However, these moves weren't YOLO bombs on 3rd and 20......they were crafty 5 yard screens that busted for 70 yards. Or, in the case of Soler, a 2 yard draw play that he housed for 85. These were low risk, low odds of serious upside that all went absolutely bonkers. Good for them that they took those shots, but the odds of acquiring four guys who ranged from "future contract in Japan" to "He's alright I guess" and turn that into a couple of playoff MVPs and a .900 OPS is just crazy. I get the sense people have that they want teams not to give in. Totally get it. But some posters here bang on their soap box about "go for it" and "be aggressive" and I don't think they're being honest with themselves if they evaluate these moves (as they were in late July) as anything remotely like that. These were Terry Ryan type deals.

    Their trades were all nibbles. They traded fringe prospects and players for low end trade commodities. Not a single sane human would call those moves splashy. Soler was a negative WAR player with an OPS in Simmons territory. Rosario was acquired for the corpse of Pablo Sandoval. Adam Duvall was a perfectly league average player. They acquired experienced players other teams were dumping. That's it. They worked and in hindsight were brilliant. Not "all in" or "going for it" or any other aggressive terms. "Not giving up" is not the same as pressing the gas pedal.

    Let's be frank: On this board if the Twins were in the position of Atlanta and we came away with a bunch of fringe trades (at the time) like Rosario, Soler, etc. there would've been a lot of complaints. Atlanta didn't "go for it" in the sense we use that term. They didn't make any huge, splashy additions or roster shaking moves. They nibbled around the edge of the trade market and got their team depth. Then they rode a few hot hands (Rosario, Ian Anderson, their bullpen) and won the small sample . I don't think this is a blueprint as much as yet another example that there isn't one way to do this, the best teams don't always win, and just try to give your team a good shot with depth and a fighting chance.

    I would seriously consider tuning the Twins out for an entire year if Andrelton Simmons is our plan in 2021. I want absolutely no part in that. If a defensive placeholder is all you want than sign Galvis. But I prefer we swing big. Whomever it is, even if they are an all field/no hit shortstop....it just can't be Simmons again. I can't watch another year of disgusting at-bats.

    I endorse this for the same reasons @chpettit19 did - this is an offseason to be bold, not complacent. I don't love non-tendering Rogers or the OF defense this team would have, but I appreciate going the bold direction. This team needs to be aggressive as hell at shortstop, reliever, and starting pitching. And if they move Donaldson and another couple chunks of change they have more than enough money to do them all. This plan, and mine which has many similarities, demonstrate just how aggressive that could be. It'd be fun to see.

    Really good player. Shop him and trade him if you can get a good pitcher.

    I don't see any scenario where the Marlins say yes to deal Alcantara for those players. You won't get an ace for spare parts.

    I like how your prices all seemed very cognizant of being fair and not homerish. I'd have liked to see you lay out the roster after all your moves along with the salary bottom line. My biggest plus there was the Arraez trade idea (does STL need a 2B?), but I'm worried about Chris Taylor as an every day SS.

    Clearly you are not well-versed with Ace Ian Anderson the One True Pitching God. At least I assume that's what he is because the rest of the NL Champion Braves certainly aren't pitching like aces. And the Astros? Yeah...go take a gander at all the aces they rode to the World Series! Playoffs are a small sample. Teams with depth and luck win in the postseason. There is no magic formula and certainly not one where aces win championships.

    I wasn't necessarily speaking for me. There are a lot of fans that are upset with starters who can't/don't pitch many innings. Robbie Ray was doing that before it was cool. (Driving up 100+ pitch counts in 4 innings. It was a common issue in his time with AZ) I only brought it up because people tend to look at "aces" as top end guys who are workhorses and Ray has a suspect history on that front. If the Twins invested in him I'd be fine with that.

    The 2021 season had Buxton and the guys on the mound absolutely mattered. Partly because having Byron Buxton doesn't really mean you actually get all that much Buxton, but one baseball player cannot singlehandedly will a team to competence. Just ask Mike Trout.

    While true, the value of being cost controlled is still attached to the value you bring as a player as well. While I think Max Kepler is a fine player, and perhaps a guy I'd rather bet on to rebound from last year, I'm not sure his production makes the ability to control his costs all that attractive. I could be totally wrong, I just don't see that the direction Oakland would go if they dealt Manaea.

    Yes, but it was also a career high by about 20 innings for him. I'm not sure that's what we would expect going forward. Historically he's about a 5 inning guy.

    We're back to using the word "ace" very loosely I see. If people don't like their starters being pulled after 5 they're going to hate Robbie Ray. We need good, consistent pitchers. Who cares how you slot them.

    No, in favor of us. A SP has more value than a corner OF all things being equal. I don't see any reason why the A's would take that deal when they can add OF for less than that cost.

    I like the ideas, but there are two I find unlikely: SP Jon Gray is going to get 3 years and 45M. maybe more. I can't imagine Kepler is going to get Maenea. That seems really imbalanced.

    I think the salaries are a tad light. But then I am of the opinion the team will push up the budget this offseason. Not putting any money down in Vegas on that though.

    I think Knebel is in the 3 year 8-10M AAV range. He has a track record and his late season work indicate a worthy investment. But I'd pay him that and the Twins certainly can.
