  1. You are placing way too much analysis on 5 starts.
  2. I don't think that's going to be an issue considering how shaky some of the current rotation members look. I wouldn't be surprised if the Twins are cycling through the AAAA equivalents of Albers, Johnson and Pino by then due to injuries or ineffectiveness.
  3. People need to relax. In spring training it was considered ridiculous that Meyer wasn't in the rotation since he was one of the 5 best starters. He has been a mess but you give a prospect with his skill level more time than 5 starts before making a rash decision.
  4. There is no such thing as too much pitching when none of your pitchers are aces and you have had as many problems as the Twins have had with starting pitching. I also think that Nolasco has only been delaying the inevitable and will get TJ at some point this season. Right now the Twins have questions marks everywhere in the rotation. Hughes and Santana should be solid when Santana returns. After that nobody is lock to stay in the rotation. Mays is doing very well right now so he is getting close to locking down his spot. Gibson in theory should have a spot locked down but he isn't striking anyone out and appears to be becoming the next Blackburn instead of Baker. Everyone expects Pelfrey to turn into a pumpkin (except Thrylos). Milone is a backend guy that is an acceptable fill-in. Meyer has fallen apart in AAA. I'm pessimistic that Nolasco pitches well this season (due to injury) but this is not a great rotation with too many starters.
  5. If Sano is raking then he will be able to make room with Arcia, Rosario, Hicks or Vargas in the OF or at DH. I don't like the idea of moving Plouffe and putting Sano at 3B. I'm okay with Hunter's defense for a year but long term I like the idea of setting up a good defense and I am not an optimist that Sano will be anything better than below average.
  6. The good thing about Hunter all along is that the Twins at least have an OF'er that is good at one thing (offense or defense). There was a good chance that the Twins would have been starting another OF'er that wasn't good at anything or they would have had to trade a good asset or lock up multiple years in a 30+ yr old to get a good OF'er.
  7. I don't think he will be promoted until the end of June or into July. He is probably the best option in CF right now but prospect development is more important than getting Robinfer out of CF right now. I think it's pretty important that Buxton gets a solid half season of hitting at AA so that he doesn't lose confidence right away since he had several months of recent success to fall back on. I also think that the Twins didn't look to hard or invest too much into CF because Buxton was in their plans this season.
  8. How far is Okafor going to fall? He has really good potential but just how high can a poor post defender that can't shoot free throws go? This just seems like the completely wrong era for him to be drafted. Teams almost definitely need to have at least one of their bigs that can shoot an outside shot or even better 3's to stretch out defenses. How is that going to work with Okafor not handling things defensively or shooting? Right now I hope the Wolves are not in a position to draft Okafor. Towns still looks awesome since he does everything you want from a center. That presents a lineup challenge since Dieng is a rising player and easily one of the top 5 Wolves. I also like Russell (not really a wing but could) and Winslow more since this is becoming a wing dominated league and the Wolves could use another wing. I have no idea what to think of Mudiay yet. Rubio presents another issue since he doesn't really fit into the current NBA. You are limited on what you can do on offense as a team if your defender doesn't respect your outside shot. I guess the good news (regarding disastrous news) is that the rising cap will make Rubio's new contract a modest sunk cost.
  9. Where exactly do you Plouffe rank as a 3Bman? Guys above him in no order Donaldson Rendon Arenado Carpenter - maybe not this good Seager Beltre - almost finished? Bryant - not yet but will Guys that seem in his tier (in no order) Frazier headley Machado Longoria - yes, Longoria is in this tier Pablo Wright Chisenhall Lawrie Probably a couple of others He seems to be establishing himself as a top 10ish 3Bman and could move up that list a little. Right now I don't support moving him from 3B and putting Sano there in the future. This seems ironic since there has been so much analysis about how bad the Twins defense is, critical comments of torii's signing and ideas for improving the said defense. Let Sano continue to play there since it looks like he might not come up this season. Anything can happen and perhaps the Twins don't have Plouffe in a year or two or he gets injured. I also think that Plouffe should be signed to an extension. He is only two years (after this season) away from FA and if he does establish himself as a top 10 (or top 5) 3Bman then he is going to be very expensive to sign.
  10. I thought going into the season that the Twins were a 75 to maybe 80 win team that began transitioning into a playoff contender. After the slow start I thought they were headed towards another top 5 pick. now I think they are back to being the 75-80 win team. I would consider the season to be very successful if they ended up .500 and several young players began stepping up and showing that they would be average or better players in the future.
  11. The point is that you should never use a month of stats to rank ability. Suzuki has had an awful month but that isn't a measure of how will play for the rest of the season. This isn't really even an issue of WAR. It's basic statistical analysis. Using your analysis method Dee Gordon is the best player in baseball and Stephen Vogt is the 4th best. No reasonable person would claim that. They have played very, very good in the first month though. Suzuki on the other hand has played poorly for the first month.
  12. Did Neil Allen just teach Pelfrey to not strikeout anyone like in today's game? Pelfrey is the same Pelfrey that he has always been and those wheels will fall off soon. May on the otherhand seems to have relaxed after being overwhelmed in the majors in his initial callup. This is exactly what Brandon's article is about. May is back to doing the things that made him successful in AAA last season.
  13. That's funny but not what I meant. WAR is worthless with a month of stats. He has hit terribly to start the season but that's a reality in baseball when looking at small sample sizes. If it's late June and he is still Buteresque then looking at stats have some value. His IsoP is normal. His BB and K rates are normal. His BAPIP is at .217. At the end of the season we are probably looking at a boring .260/.310/.360. I'm not going to try to justify why the org has all but said Pinto will not be catching for the Twins. Suzuki is just a placeholder. I wish the Twins felt that Pinto was an option and we at least saw a 60/40 split in catching duties but don't misuse a small sample of stats and attempt to make a point.
  14. I think we will be seeing Buxton in July. It's very unlikely that 3 of Hunter, Arcia, Robinfer, Hicks or Rosario are playing well and healthy. This does mean that Buxton needs to be healthy and playing really well (like .850 OPS sustained).
  15. Please don't ever criticize the use of WAR since this is an egregious misuse of it.
  16. I'm pretty excited that the Twins have a Taiwanese player that might be on the verge of becoming a really interesting prospect and get promoted at some time. I think there is only one active player (Chen in BAL) right now. I was really bummed out that the Cubs stole Jen Ho Tseng from the Twins when they started this blowing through the int'l signing bonus mess.
  17. Taiwan uses every romanization which really confuses things. They are converting to Hanyu Pinyin but most names (not all) are still spelled using Wade Giles. Without having the Chinese characters we are just guessing how to pronounce it. In Wade Giles the only pronunciation that we know that is incorrect is ChEE. That would be spelled Chi in Wade Giles. There are two possibilities for Chih in Wade Giles and this is why Wade Giles is absolutely awful. Chih is Zhi in Hanyu Pinyin (what I know) and a 'j' sound followed by a short 'i'. Ch'ih is Chi in Hanyu Pinyin and a 'ch' sound followed by a short 'i'. http://madcat.library.wisc.edu/help/wadetopinyin.pdf In addition to that the primary language in Taiwan is Mandarin. All class subjects are taught in Mandarin and most are only fluent in Mandarin. My students only speak Taiwanese when they visit their grandparents. An even older generation speaks Japanese (getting rare) since the Japanese administered Taiwan before and during WW2.
  18. I will be happy if Sano becomes Adam Dunn and hits 35+ HR with a .375 OBP. It would be a bit of a bonus if he was marginally useful somewhere in the field. But I think it's a lazy comp for a prospect based on the stats of a 20 yr old (this year's stats are meaningless so far) playing in AA.
  19. Have you also been bashing Mauer? Aside from HR's his BA, OBP and OPS are now approaching his career numbers.
  20. even this is a knee jerk reaction based on <1 month of play after 1 year off.
  21. 4 different people have suggested that Vargas should be sent down just on the 4th page of this thread. That doesn't make it as clear cut as you indicate. Vargas isn't a great hitting prospect. That's true but he is still a very good hitting prospect. One of the reasons that he's been on the fringe is that he's basically positionless. Yes, his approach isn't flawless but if it was then he would be a phenomenal prospect.
  22. Are we going to suggest that Pinto gets sent down if he struggles for 3-4 weeks? It seems like a knee jerk reaction to send down a really good hitting prospect after 61 PA's.
  23. You can stop dreaming of trading Nolasco (or Milone or Pelfrey) to anybody that has playoff aspirations. I also think that the Twins so called surplus of starting pitching will not look like a surplus of pitching in 2-3 months. And Meyer will be called up. Wainwright was completely on my avoid list this year in fantasy but I didn't expect an Achilles injury to take him out.
  24. You missed my point about 3.2%. It's just stupid that beer should be restricted to 3.2% to be sold at certain places or on certain days.
