  1. It's a waste of time to even have him on the team if he can't handle the differences between LF and RF defensively. This is just silly. His development is not being hurt by switching to LF even if he switches back to RF.
  2. It was a case of Delmon or Cuddy in LF and RF. Yes, Delmon profiled well as a RF but Cuddy was also very limited defensively and should have been in RF. I don't think the Twins would have been better off with 1 CF and 2 RF'ers those seasons.
  3. What are the sources that suggest he is nearly MLB ready as a defender? Navarreto was a raw but physically talented HS catcher that fell in the draft due to makeup issues. He supposedly had good to great offensive and defensive tools but I seriously question that his defense has progressed to the point that he is nearly MLB ready.
  4. I still don't understand the complaints about signing Hunter. 10M is not a hefty amount on a one year contract. He might be a bad fit in some ways but the alternative was fielding an OF Arcia, Schafer, Hicks, Rosario or the AAAA types that we have seen in recent years. I highly doubt Hunter is taking at bats away from legitimate players of the future. Aoki and Rasmus might (and only might) have been better fits but also shouldn't be considered part of the future (even the young Rasmus). But the more important part than the marketing angle and fan interest is that it puts a veteran in the locker room that shows players how to play the game right. That might sound cheesy but young players need strong role models even if those role models aren't great players anymore.
  5. that's basically saying that there are 5 RHB's and 4 LHB's in the average lineup. That doesn't exactly scream the huge difference that you are claiming. At the end of the day if Arcia isn't versatile enough to handle LF and RF because of a difference like this then he has no business being in the outfield.
  6. Yes, it helps that 5 teams can't sign the high priced guys but the problem is that everyone that has been late to the party can blow through their bonus pool and take the penalty. I understand that everyone wants to complain about how the system is unfair but it is significantly more fair than the old system where there were no penalties at all. In addition to that the Twins actually participate in this market which is something they really didn't do until the Sano/Kepler/Polanco offseason. And the next CBA will either include some really significant penalties or be a straight up draft. It should have been obvious that this would happen when they agreed to the CBA.
  7. Yes, it's baffling that MLB's analysts couldn't have seen that teams would do this. Still it's better than the old system where there were no caps at all on int'l FA spending and it has all but set up an int'l draft (or real penalties for exceeding the cap) where the talent gets distributed more evenly.
  8. I think they tried but he has 2.5 yrs left on his contract. Nobody wants that. Perhaps next trade deadline when he is 1.5 yrs away from FA and presumably healthy/good. I think at this point the question should be whether or not the Wolves can win enough games to move out of the top 4 worst records. They are clearly the best of the 4 worst teams right now. Making up 6-7 games on ORL/SAC/UT will be really tough though. That should still net them a nice pick with a really good 4/5 players establishing themselves at the top.
  9. The problem with saying that FA's on long term contract don't work out is that you end up with a cheap team that does well in wins/dollar spent but still isn't very good. Nolasco hasn't worked out but it's hardly conclusive evidence that the team should have continued to operate with a <75M payroll. At some point teams have to spend money and one of the few places that teams can spend money is on FA's. This is especially true of teams that developed very few expensive arb eligible players that could be getting extensions. The key in FA is to get a decent value when you spend the money and so far Nolasco has done nothing. At the end of the day if you don't spend the money it's gone. Now I would have preferred that the Twins had jumped at exploiting the int'l draft loopholes like other teams but it's unlikely that they would have done that even if they hadn't signed Nolasco. The only thing that Nolasco needs to do to keep his spot in the rotation is to not be completely awful or injured. Despite being awful last season he has the potential to be one of the best pitchers in the rotation. May and Meyer will get their chances this year regardless of Nolasco and I think May will win the #5 spot.
  10. I'm kind of stuck with my team. I have a lot of vets or bounceback guys that could be sold for 50 cents on the dollar that I will just keep instead. I'm pretty happy about getting Grant Holmes. I might have taken Hoffman but Ben is the only guy that could be a little upset by the delayed pick since his pick was then known. Getting Holmes has some good upside and I have put together a sneaky good set of pitching prospects recently. That could set up a big trade in July for me because I don't keep prospects.
  11. I really don't understand the why people are frustrated specifically by this. The Twins could have signed Moncada instead of Ervin or done other things differently. The Brewers were involved and there is no reason that the Twins couldn't have been. Yes, the system (that has been evened out significantly recently) puts them at a disadvantage but the Twins aren't that poor. In addition to that this loophole will almost certainly be closed in the next CBA since it's painfully obvious to everyone that they screwed up this particular part of the CBA (needed stiffer overage penalties). But they have greatly improved the talent distribution in both the draft and int'l FA (Under 23) compared to the rules 5 years ago when big market teams could completely dominate the overslot and int'l FA categories. Moncada is of course a risk but his value is similar to Sano or Buxton. All will probably need another year in the minors and are top 10 prospects in baseball. If Sano or Buxton were on the open market they would probably get similar money.
  12. Apparently people have told Scott that they want to leave the league because of this. I guess I should have just said that I simply could not do the draft as Scott scheduled. I had told him my schedule and he still started the draft when I was gone. It seems that there was another riff over JBJ. This is just getting silly.
  13. Nice to see everyone get bent out of shape again.
  14. I disagree. He was 19 in AA with excellent defense at SS, great BA/OBP with power and speed and the SABR stats that project well. The only thing that he didn't do was OPS 1.000 at any level like a top prospect would but of course that has a lot to do with being a 19 yr old MI prospect in AA.
  15. Could Russell complement Rubio or would Rubio have to be shipped off to make it work?
  16. You agree enough with them to post them with any sort of relevance. Imo once you get to that range you are just hoping to develop a role player with a small chance of getting a star. The odds of getting a star are so much higher in the top 3 and that is what winning teams are built on.
  17. I disagree with Ben's pick valuations. I don't think any team would trade a top 3 pick for two mid/late first rd picks (non lottery picks) in the same draft. The Wolves for example traded the 10th pick for two later rd picks and most thought it was a bad move at the time. Luckily all 3 players involved have shown decent potential. I kind of agree with Scott's draft analysis (it's deep) but it's kind of the same as last year. getting a Parker/Wiggins level player is much better than a Smart/Randle level player. Other years though there is a much larger separation in the lottery. But the main point with the Payne trade is that the Wolves got a mid/late first rd talent now for an equivalent value future pick (many years later). And he fits the roster fairly well. the big question is whether or not they have correctly evaluated his talent. The other important thing is that they aren't throwing in 1st rd picks for average veterans like they did with Young or was their MO in the 2000's (the Jaric and Cassell trades among others). Speaking of that - good job Brooklyn. You have destroyed any chance of being good in the future with that Boston trade last year.
  18. The Padres still have a lower payroll and future commitments despite their splash this year. My favorite part of the Padres offseason is that they traded 2nd tier prospects (let's say 51-100+ ranked) for good MLB players.
  19. I don't think Pek can even be traded next year for anything of value. He will have something like 3/36 left. Maybe the following season with 2 years left and some theoretical health during the next season. The problem with Pek and Dieng is that neither has much of an outside shot so defenders can just clog the middle when both are on the floor. Combine that with Wiggins and Muhammad not being true perimeter threats although Wiggins can shoot 3's. Almost forgot to include Rubio in this... I also disagree with amjgt. Money, the draft and anything else in baseball is nowhere as close to the same as getting a top pick (sometimes the draft is 1 deep) for a franchise. Getting Okafor next season transforms this team into a borderline playoff team (maybe in 2 years) in a normal western conference.
  20. The problem is that the Wolves are trading away 1st rd picks and getting back 2nd rd picks for veterans. The Young trade has been disastrous since he can't really play PF. I'm not sure the Payne trade is that bad if he's a legit big that can shoot. The pick is lottery protected almost forever and he might be exactly what the Wolves need for the roster. Gorgui and Pekovic don't seem to be able to play well together. Bennett seems more like a bust and nobody else can play the 4. I would be absolutely shocked if Pek is traded. Nobody is picking up that contract with his injury concerns so the Wolves are stuck with him. The same probably is true for Martin for at least another year.
  21. It's an offseason like this that can energize a fanbase. The Padres may have spent money and traded a pile of depth type prospects (along with a couple of good ones) but they are probably going to make that money back in increased ticket sales. I blogged about this a week ago here - https://fantasybaseballrebooted.wordpress.com/2015/02/04/what-were-the-padres-thinking/
  22. Never fear Wolves fans 12/13 games are against .500 or better teams. After that they have 5/6 against lottery teams which will likely cement in their position (+/- 1 spot) near the end of the season. It's sad that getting a top pick is so important to a franchise. In baseball I don't really care much about draft position but it's different in basketball.
  23. I usually take a 16 yr old in the 3rd rd with what is basically a throw away pick. Usually you have to wait 2 years before they even play short season ball. And then it's a couple more years before they are in AA (if they are fast tracked). I grabbed Minier in this league off FA probably 2 years after he signed and a year later I'm still waiting for him to get to A ball. Thorpe moved a little quicker though. It's almost better to wait until one of the top 50 int'l signees start creating a little buzz. I'm interested to see how high the other Cuban, Korean and Japanese signees go. Moncada and Tomas could go top ten but the others will go considerably lower.
  24. First winning streak of the season and 3-3 in their last 6. Yes, it's dealing with a small sample size and they will still get destroyed by the western conference schedule but now that this team is healthy they aren't really this bad. Let's just hope that it's too late to catch Utah/Orlando and fall out of the top 4 (record wise).
  25. I don't see a lot of value of picking the best int'l (16 yr old) FA's until rd 2 or 3. Unless they are a more of a Sano level signee. They might have projection but they also have huge bust rates and they take forever to even get to full season ball. Except for the odd guy that just crushes it. This is another good draft. Even at pick 17 I think I will end up with a good prospect.
