  1. This is very good. There isn't as much negotiating to be done and there will be even less (my speculation) once a new CBA is agreed to in a couple of years ago. One problem with the current draft is that the CWS isn't finished. Players get injured or teams have to wait to even approach these picks. But you want to get the drafted players into the rookie leagues so you can't wait much longer.
  2. I think calling more strikes is the last thing that is needed. Strikeout rates have gone through the roof in the last 5 years.
  3. Am I the only one that finds the Wolves continued handling of Love as tacky? This is coming from a team with 8 wins and the worst NBA record. I have been concerned optimistic that Pek and Martin coming back would give the team a boost since I still don't believe that they are this bad but rather that injuries to the 3 veterans caused this level of ineptitude. They beat the Celtics but lost to the 76ers. It appears the Thad Young deal was an awful idea now. Obvious to some initially but probably only because they wanted to completely tank from the beginning. The problem is that this team has way too many small forwards and Thad Young isn't a capable big guy. At least Wiggins is turning into something kind of awesome.
  4. One big difference with Parmelee is that his numbers and especially his power was on the decline as he progressed through the minors. As a result he spent 2 seasons in low A, 1 season in high A and 2 seasons in AA. His last 2 MiLB seasons he had an isoP in the low .100's. that's great if you are a up the middle player but not if you have very little defensive value and aren't hitting .300+. Vargas has maintained a solid .200 isoP as he has moved up.
  5. Obviously there would have to be a penalty. If a RP'er leaves before he completes the 2-3 batters then they could automatically award an IBB and all runners advance one base. This should be enough of a penalty that he stays in.
  6. I might have mentioned this before. I 80% really like the idea and 20% unsure (there can always be unintended consequences). Mostly I don't like things that I consider overmanaging and this is one of them. Using 3 (or more) RP'ers in an inning drives me crazy. Filling up an entire roster of RP'ers such that teams have a skeleton offensive bench seems silly.
  7. Of course I'm concerned about the plate discipline but I also think too much is made of a rookie's first two months. It's a small sample size at a time when Vargas took a huge step from AA to MLB. He also showed pretty good discipline in the minors.
  8. Rodon terrifies me. The White sox have used a very different method of acquiring players and they are nailing it. They could be contenders this year with the rotation they have and they have enough bats.
  9. Of course there are more factors responsible for the recent struggles but this has to be a big reason. If you aren't bringing in FA's then you have to hit on your early picks. The Twins didn't. There are other ways to retool a team but depending on late round picks, waiver wire gems and rule V picks is a bigger crapshoot than 1st rd picks.
  10. I am apprehensive about Gordon this year. I agreed with the pick but didn't love the pick. He seems like a boom or bust type that could start gaining steam like Russell did in the lower minors. He's not the same type of player but if he hits like his potential says then he could be a star.
  11. I'm not sure how someone can even debate that the Twins 1st round drafts were anything but bad during this period. Out of 11 picks it looks like there are 2 average players from the 1st rounds. that is bad. You could say that it conveniently excludes better drafts on each side of that but these years are the players that are supposed to be supplying the MLB team with young talent to fill holes and very few young players came up during the last 5 years (until the last season). These drafts are a big reason that the Twins have been bad but on the bright side the more recent Twins drafts (and their int'l signings and later round picks) have been doing much better. I also disagree that the Twins were drafting for need. I think they had a profile that they liked (safe college pitcher and toolsy HS athlete) that led to a lot of busts.
  12. Norris was a mid first rd talent that fell because of bonus demands. If you are going to play the hindsight game at least play it correctly. The Twins problem (forever) is that they wouldn't go overslot.
  13. The key here is whether or not he's adequately working out and getting proper nutrition. There is no reason that can't happen in a van and it beats the hell out of the lounging around that some players do in their homes.
  14. Yes, tickets are expensive but the reason that fewer people are going is that the Twins have given the fans no hope that the team will get better. This is what happens when a team is bad for a long time. And this is one of reasons that I gave for blowing a bunch of money on a name FA this year or last year. Contrary to the OP I can't even give credit to the FO for spending a bunch of money since payroll will barely top 100M this year. 5 years ago they could afford that with Target Field and revenues have been exploding due to various league wide new revenue sources. There's no reason that the Twins had to have the 23rd ranked payroll last season. This year they will barely crack the top 20 in overall payroll. I'm giving them zero credit for loosening the purse strings. They might have justifiable baseball reasons for having a low payroll but they haven't loosened the purse strings unless you compare them to the Marlins.
  15. I like the Soler side. Segura is good now but not great. Norris is a good arm but Soler could be an elite player.
  16. I just have no idea what you are criticizing next year's likely plan for. By all accounts Vargas is the guy and he will have a fairly long leash. Isn't that what you want? Pinto and Arcia only enter the equation if Vargas is injured or struggles. This is what happens on virtually every team when their assigned DH goes down (including Boston).
  17. I think that is the plan so I'm further confused. There's a chance that Vargas struggles this year and gets sent down but I'm not sure what you want. Do you want the Twins to promote the AAA DH because he's used to the position? Do you not want the Twins to find AB's for talented hitters like Pinto that are likely going to be stuck on the bench? Would you prefer that the Twins put a better fielding OF'er at DH and kept Arcia in the field for this stability? Do you want a more obvious plan B DH brought in that takes AB's away from Vargas?
  18. Nobody is picking up Nolasco's contract. It's just not possible unless the Twins are taking on an equally ugly contract. I suggested a Nolasco for Crawford swap but even that was unlikely to ever happen. It would have to be a worse contract/player. Crawford is actually pretty good (just not 20M/yr good). I'm not even sure the Twins have way too many 30 yr olds. Santana and Nolasco in the rotation. Suzuki, Mauer and Torii in the lineup. The bullpen has a few old guys taking up spots like Duensing/Fien but I doubt they are around for long. There are few guys that don't have guaranteed spots even though they have guaranteed money (like Pelfrey). I guess if your goal was to have no 30 yr olds then they have too many but I don't subscribe to the theory that rebuilding teams must have zero veterans.
  19. I don't really understand what you want. Are you looking for someone so awful in the field that he can only fill the DH role? I can understand wanting a set DH instead of rotating through a bunch of light hitters on the roster but guys like Arcia and Pinto should be able to hit even though they might not be dreadfully awful in the field.
  20. Is the goal of this thread to get a PTNBL?
  21. Vargas is a true DH. Possibly Arcia and Pinto also since their fielding is poor at best.
  22. He's the starting DH because he did excellent in an extended callup last year. Obviously if he struggles he will be sent down and it's not terribly unlikely that he will struggle. I consider him a 50/50 bet next year but he is almost certainly going to be the opening day DH. there is a backup plan in place. Pinto, Rosario (Arcia/Hunter to DH) and even potentially Sano later. Do you want the Twins to sign a legit veteran bat that will take AB's away the first time he has a few struggles?
  23. good get and you killed discussions with one team that wanted one of my closers. Someone will need a closer though. My team has too much depth. The only deals I can make are either a blockbuster or for prospects since I have good players not only starting but also backing up every position. Of course I would love to get a better SS but that's a tough trade in any league.
  24. You are talking about the BA/BP/ESPN scouts/columnists. Yes, they don't get to see many games but that doesn't mean that there aren't pro scouts that follow a region all summer and see a lot of games. And BA constantly references conversations with those guys.
  25. It's not that crazy for Dozier. He's going to get 500K for the 1st of those 4 contracted years and the first arb year is always way below market value.. Let's call his first arb year 4.5M. He locks in his final 2 arb years at for 13M (6.5M/yr). He's leaving money on the table but he also has guaranteed money. Extensions get expensive when you are actually buying out FA years.
