  1. Come on. the Twins bullpen is full of mediocre arms. Calling up Burdi and bringing in a good bullpen arm to setup are not mutually exclusive moves.
  2. This offseason is mostly over. I'm hoping for a cheap stopgap CF'er. I would also like to see a guy like Jason Motte brought in. The bullpen is pretty bad but I don't know of any good targets left. I would have fully supported bringing in Gregerson as a setup guy.
  3. Graham isn't really a RP'er but it's his only chance of sticking with the Twins for a year. And gilmartin is so far down the pecking order that he was unlikely to ever wear a Twins uniform. Graham imo has the profile to move into a power reliever role (or be a complete bust). gilmartin looks like AAA fodder. Even when he was a good prospect he didn't strike out many guys.
  4. McCarthy has shoulder problems and has been injured nearly every MLB season. He was an interesting target on a 2 yr contract but not at all on the contract that he got.
  5. How many more FA's are the Twins signing for this to hinder the Twin's payroll in 2017 or 2018? Mauer, Nolasco and Santana are the only big contracts those years (and expiring by 2018). Dozier and Plouffe are the only 2nd/3rd yr arb guys of significance.
  6. Arruebarrena won't hit much in the majors. He's all glove despite his SSS. Guerrero is pretty interesting. I think the other factor is that Kendrick will certainly bring back a draft pick next offseason while giving the Dodgers a top 5 2Bman this year. I also think Heaney is overrated based on his MiLB #'s. His stuff is okay but nothing great.
  7. Throw him in the pen for the year and see if that heat plays up.
  8. You have greatly oversimplified the business. Yearly revenue and payroll is a small part of the Twins baseball business equation. The Pohlad's are making out huge simply by owning the Twins. Baseball franchises are skyrocketing in value. Off the field revenue is skyrocketing. Payrolls all over the MLB are skyrocketing. I completely understand why payroll dropped the last couple of seasons but there is a lot of money that could be spent on payroll and not damage the bottom line of the business.
  9. One thread complains about not spending enough and the other complains about who they spent on. Confusing. There's no reason that the Twins shouldn't be operating in the 125+M range. In the short term it's hard to spend that much money w/o overloading the roster with aging vets but the Twins have a massive amount of room to work with when it comes time to giving out big extensions to the arb eligible players in a few years. It shouldn't be a surprise that payroll is down so much since the Twins have not needed to give out any big extensions to these types in the last few years (Perkins is the exception).
  10. But those 3 in addition to the imminent arrival and success of prospects were the argument made not to sign Santana last year.
  11. Same exact argument was used against Ervin Santana last year and the Twins cycled through crap at the back of the rotation. Last year we had to leave spots open for Worley, Diamond and Deduno because they were 4.00ish ERA guys on the cheap. All I read this year is 'but there are 6-7 pitchers that need to pitch' while leaving out that one of them is coming back from a strained elbow and could be headed to TJ. May is not that great of a prospect and could easily fizzle again. Meyer has his own injury problems. Milone actually might not be very good at all. The Twins are setup to be rotating the likes of Darnell, Pino and Albers (different names but the same crap) through the bottom of the rotation once again.
  12. There's no reason you can't do both. The Twins bullpen is awful. Perkins and Fien are the only RP'ers actually worth their roster spot. A few others fill a role but offer very little long term. They could easily find room for a guy like Gregerson as a setup guy and promote any of the prospects that have upside.
  13. Brian Dozier is much better than Gordon. I would have sent Danny Santana for Heaney.
  14. Santana isn't depth. He would signed as a #1/2 for this team. yes, he could get injured and completely collapse like 2014 Nolasco but if you dismiss every FA for that reason the Twins should never sign anyone anywhere ever. Signing guys like Pelfrey is depth and pointless though.
  15. The goal of a rebuilding team is to add talent wherever they can without blocking prospects. Gregerson is really good and he becomes a trade chip in a year or two. I would have had no problem if the Twins signed Gregerson.
  16. He would step in as the Twins #1 or #2 pitcher. that's a big upgrade and I'm alright having enough depth that May/Meyer/Berrios are actually blocked by good pitchers. It's a long season and pitchers always get hurt or disappoint.
  17. That's the argument that I have been making for the Twins to spend some money.
  18. Somebody is going to miss out on the top pitchers this offseason and ante up the prospects for Hamels. I would without a doubt trade any one of the Twins pitching prospects for Hamels. This isn't Vance Worley moving to the AL. Worley's comparable is Dillon Gee. Hamels is like a better version of Anibal Sanchez. Instead of getting much worse as predicted he got better when he moved to the AL.
  19. The White Sox show how to rebuild by using money in addition to prospects (typically discarded prospects).
  20. Nice evaluation based on 29 out of 274 starts.
  21. If Greene is a #5 then Gibson is a #6.
  22. No K's and mediocre stuff are a bad combination. No K's, great stuff that needs work and was 19 in full season ball. Basically he's nothing like those guys. Lewin Diaz is a guy that hasn't been mentioned. He will be in rookie ball and a year behind Minier but he has upside. I really like thorpe if he can come back healthy.
  23. Or perhaps a realistic rap when it comes to comparing him to a guy (and trade value) like Shelby Miller. At no point did I say that gibson wasn't going to be a solid pitcher for the Twins.
  24. It's taken this many seasons to rack up 42 WAR. Even if you don't like WAR that seems to agree that he was good for a long time but not great. Plus there are going to be way too many players on the ballot (unless changes happen) for a guy like Hunter to gain support. Jim Edmonds will be on the ballot in a couple of years and he has better stats in CF.
  25. Alex Rios is no different than Torii Hunter. He's younger but he's still very old for a baseball player. He had a worse offensive season in a much better offensive park. He also plays bad defense according to the same stats that people are grading Hunter by. In addition to that the Twins are likely trying to convince him to come to MN for a year to rebuild value and he looks elsewhere. That leaves the Twins with nothing.
