  1. Sorry, I exaggerated since I remembered more 500K price tags for 200-300K guys like Barrie but they have been signing alot of 200-300K guys and it seems like they have done a pretty good job picking them. One thing that is very strange (and frustrating) about the Twins is that they took an unusual path signing Sano, Kepler and Polanco in one offseason and then they cut back until 2012 when teams had bonus pools. At that point they started spending more (pretty much their entire bonus pool). I know the discussion was about 1 - 4M prospect vs 5 - 800K prospects but is there really a difference between a 200-300K prospects and 500-800K prospects? Can they really be dismissed as cheaper guys? 2013 - Diaz 1.4M, Tapia 550K, Martinez 340K, Molina 300K, Barrie 250K, Balbuena 175K, Gomez 150K, Herrera 135K, Verkerk ? 2012 - Minier 1.4M, Thorpe 500K, Hu 220K, Silva 175K, Tovar 100K, Quezada 150K 2011 - Gonzalez 650K , Silva 370K, Perez 300K, Romero 260K, Jorge 330K That is 5 interesting prospects that have recently ranked in the top 25 (on someone's list) out of two years of signings. I am certainly not going to complain about these cheaper guys.
  2. At least it was Altuve that was voted in as the starter. He is having an excellent season. I would take Dozier over him but it isn't like Omar Infante was one of the two 2B on the team.
  3. I feel conflicted.
  4. So how do you split up the minutes for the bigs and who works well together? The only pairing that definitely seems like a bad idea is Pek and Dieng. Towns and Bjelica seems interesting long term since both can hit outside shots but Dieng/Towns could form a formidable duo. I still see no way that the Wolves can move Pek. His contract isn't as bad (still bad) since the cap is exploding but nobody wants to tie up cap dollars either. It is too bad that the Wolves couldn't have pawned Pek off on the Knicks before they spent 54M on Lopez. Phil Jackson is doing awful things in NY and the Knicks are going to be rebuilding for the next decade.
  5. The team definitely has to roll with Santana after giving him the contract. Money matters. Likewise Hughes wasn't going anywhere. Every argument for May can also be applied to Gibson so he stays. Milone has been awesome in June even if this could end similar to Pelfrey. Yes, it's easy to say that Pelfrey should have been bumped but I find it hard to believe that would happen after the Twins have stuck with him for so long and he did so well at the beginning of the year. The question will be how quickly May gets back to the rotation. And what happens if Nolasco is ever deemed healthy.
  6. Remember when some thought that it would be a good idea to give Pelfrey a qualifying offer after the season? It is frustrating that May is bumped from the rotation but this is not unusual. Hopefully this is nothing more than 2-3 week move and May gets regular 2-3 inning work as a long man. In addition to that hopefully Ervin starts out strong. It will be tough to watch Ervin struggle after bumping May. I think Ervin is a good pitcher but it is tough to say what will happen after missing half of the season.
  7. this is a misreprensentation. They have been signing one guy for 1-1.5M each year and at least a couple of guys in the 500+ range. They haven't been spending their 4+M yearly int'l bonus pool mostly on cheaper guys. They have been spending it on one reasonably priced top 30 guy (Minier, Diaz for example) and then a pile of 500-800K guys.
  8. Tulo would be a great get despite the money owed to him. There are very, very few ways to add top tier SS's and the Twins have a steady stream of min wage (500K) prospects to plug into the roster and keep the overall payroll number down. The problem with a Tulo trade is that they are going to want a significant prospect package (even if reduced recently) for him. I would instantly trade Arcia and a Tyler for him but the Rockies instantly say no.
  9. Polanco was signed for his glove. The fact that there has been no doubt that he would stick in the MI means that they were correct. That doesn't mean that he was projected to have plus defense at both positions. Polanco is a very good prospect but I don't see him as the type that can skip AAA after 100 AA games as a 22 year old and be successful in the majors. I also doubt he plays better than Escobar right now. Speaking of Escobar: .670 OPS in May and .830 OPS in June. Why are we even talking about Polanco for the present?
  10. So you are asking for Kevin Martin? 20 ppg, 39% 3pt and 5 3pt/game If you are asking for somebody younger or somebody that plays decent defense then you are talking about a possible all-star that is getting a max offer in FA. But this has been what I have been talking about for months especially every time someone mentions trading Martin. I am a little bit more optimistic that a lineup of Lavine, Wiggins and Towns (Muhammad off the bench) could hoist enough 3's to space the floor. None of them are volume shooters but each of them could develop into a solid to excellent outside shooter.
  11. I don't think Graham is going back to the rotation. Why put him in AAA and he gets put into a line behind a couple of other starters with a solid MLB rotation? My hope is that Graham turns into a really good 7th/8th inning option and solidify the back end of the bullpen.
  12. Yes, maybe gilmartin could have been kept over some other roster fodder but I am not going to fault the team for not keeping an 88 mph lefty with middling MiLB success. I am very intrigued by Graham and I loved that pick and what he has shown so far.
  13. I am surprised but Vargas continues to struggle and the Twins need a legitimate bat to DH. Maybe Sano is ready although I would have liked for him to get one more month in the minors.
  14. Here is what I see for playing time (the numbers probably don't add up) 1 - Rubio 32 min - Jones 16 2/3 - Wiggins 30+ - Martin 25-30 - Muhammad 15-20 - Lavine 15-20 (I wish Martin the 15-20 minute guy that can carry the 2nd unit scoring load but I think he will remain a starter) 4/5 - Dieng 30 - Pekovic 25 - Towns 25 - Bjelica 10-15 Payne - Bennett - Garnett - Hummel - Budinger get scraps until injuries happen I don't think they get 30 wins this year but this is the base of a roster that could get 30-40 the following season but a lot depends on the development of the young players and how well the players mesh together. I am encouraged a lot by Towns being able to play like a 3/4 as a 7 footer. He might end up as a PF that can give the Wolves a lot of defensive options (going big or small).
  15. Castro is good but I am not trading a player of Sano's potential for a Castro level player. Sano might bust but I will take that risk.
  16. I would like Sano to get one more month in the minors. That gives him almost an entire season in the minors and then 2 months in the majors. It won't hurt if his playing time is a little inconsistent at that point.
  17. Not only were they needs but also the BPA (arguable at least). The team really didn't need two 2nd rd pick talents either and instead were able to fill a need with talent. I thought they were going to make a deal with Portland for their pick since they were rumored to be shopping it.
  18. Except Kyle doesn't have a 100% GB rate. that's impossible. His really good GB rate still makes it 53/47 that it is a GB or a FB. If he is getting 5.5 K/9 then I'm not optimistic that he is ever going to be better than a 4-4.25 ERA guy and that guy has an unlucky season with a 5+ ERA every once in awhile. Hopefully he continues to K more like he has in June because then things get interesting.
  19. Excellent. And maybe Bjelica is going to happen. Things are looking up.
  20. That's why one fills a position of need and the other doesn't come to the US for a year or two.
  21. Forget about getting value back for Bennett. At this point just be happy if you can move him without sending something of value with him. I think he stays and gets buried on the bench behind the 3 C's that take up most of the minutes at the 2 big spots. Adding Bjelica to the mix adds another big. Every day I like Towns more and more. I have really underrated his shooting since he stayed in the paint at UK. He sounds like a 3/4 that is also a dominant defensive big. That is potentially ridiculous.
  22. The 2 2nd round picks really aren't a problem. Take the best PG that is available with one and the best euro guy to stash for a year or two in the Euro league. Rozier has some fans and might last to the 2nd rd otherwise I guess a Harrison twin is a solid pick especially with Towns as the #1.
  23. Raise your hand if you wish the Wolves were mentioned in the Boogie Cousins rumors. #1 pick and another asset or two like Muhammad. I am glad that the Wolves are at least locked in on Towns though. Not sure how the lineup will work since it's almost guaranteed that the Wolves won't be trading one of their C's and most likely will be playing 2 of them often but I guess the first victory is that they might have talented players on the floor everywhere which is an improvement from previous seasons.
  24. Let's wait and see if he can break the model for a relevant sample size (like multiple seasons). That isn't to suggest that there aren't players that can break the model but players have single seasons where their ERA is lucky based on previous seasons. In Gibson's case we don't have a lot of previous MLB data to work with though. In some ways I think Gibson's rollercoaster 2014 season is in due partly to the low strikeout rate. He puts a lot of balls in play so he is going to have some days where the balls find holes or fall in for hits leading to big innings. I actually find this troubling that people are suggesting that a quote like this suggests he is a FIP/xFIP rulebreaker. There is nothing hard to understand about what is wrong with this quote. 27 K's are 27 outs every time unless the catcher screws up (a very small chance). 27 groundballs result in 6-7 hits (.240 BAPIP on GB's). There is nothing in this quote that suggests he can sustain a better ERA than FIP/xFIP.
  25. It's a shame that Stauffer didn't work out since I have always pulled for him since he screwed up his shoulder (labrum I think) between the draft and signing his big league contract. It was almost an Aiken situation where the Padres (justifiably) lowered their offer by a lot but still signed him. But he had to go. I think people will be surprised by Polanco. I don't think we will see him taking a lot of pitches. Just because he doesn't strike out much doesn't mean that he will be taking a lot of pitches. It won't be as severe as Ben Revere but when Polanco swings he makes contact. Between this and at a minimum acceptable defense (MI) he has a fairly high floor. Decent pop in his bat (although not true HR power) give him pretty good upside. And before the host of angry replies come. He will likely average 5-10 HR/season but could have a season or two of 15+. Of course I would have put Dozier in the 10 HR/season category and he is averaging 20.
