  1. Escobar has become the new Nick Punto. But he shouldn't be starting at DH/LF.
  2. I think you guys have gone a little bit too much fangraphsy and WARy in this thread. An elite RP'er has a huge impact in a game. Hell even if you use WAR he's a 3 WAR pitcher and IIRC that doesn't factor in the leverage of using your top RP'ers in close games late. To compare him to a middling SP because that SP pitches more innings is a poor argument. Closers themselves are overrated but the ability to shut down games in the 7/8/9 is an amazing advantage for a team to have particularly in the playoffs when you kick your worst (or worst 2) pitchers to the curb because of the extra days off. I would instantly trade Arcia or Meyer (plus others) for Chapman. I would trade both of them for Chapman but realistically it's going to cost much more than that.
  3. You guys are making up this problem called a logjam of pitchers. Good teams have 1-2 capable starters in AAA ready to go when one starter goes down. One reason bad teams struggle is that they are calling up AAAA guys that don't belong in the majors. I don't believe in Nolasco at all. If the Twins could find someone to take half of the contract then I would drive him to the airport (except I live in Taiwan) but I am nearly certain that is impossible. The issue is that he's been sort of effective (not great) and the Twins would have to pay 80-90% of the contract to move him for nothing. That is a pointless move to make in an era where pitchers drop like flies.
  4. Prospects frequently play at 2 levels in a singular season. Few HS prospects advance 2 levels every season outside of the top ones. I know you can find some but the point is that the Twins now have those top prospects that deserve to be pushed like this. Oh, this is a travesty. It takes 2-3 years to go from CR to ROC. The Twins are so slow at promotions.
  5. Berrios was listed in the quote. The Twins are moving almost all of the recent top prospects that are destroying their competition really fast yet some still aren't satisfied. Maybe the running joke can become regardless of well a prospect is doing he can only play in 2 leagues/season.
  6. I went Bregman but I haven't been following the draft as much this year. I think Tate/Bregman with Tucker as a backup if the others are taken would make for a good draft and hopefully the last time the Twins pick this high for awhile. Cameron still intrigues also. Last year I preferred Alex Jackson but Gordon was a 1b pick. This might be the first year in awhile where there is siginificant uncertainty with the Twins pick. Once the Astros passed on Buxton it was a no brainer. Stewart was a near consensus choice. Gordon was widely considered along with Jackson as the correct choices for the Twins although he had detractors.
  7. I can't believe that he has moved so fast. He just turned 21 and is almost a lock for a midseason promotion to AAA. He has now pitched almost exactly 100 innings at each of the full season levels and I would consider that to be really fast for someone that wasn't a top 5 draft phenom (Bundy, Taillon, Kershaw).
  8. Actually the 90% number (portion of his contract) is probably accurate. The only other way to get rid of him and not pay the contract is to take back an equally awful and overpaid player (like Carl Crawford).
  9. I'm still around but not as much as before. Life has made me very busy and although this is a far better forum that is doing things that we never could have dreamed about at BYTO it isn't as closeknit as our 20-30 regulars. That is of course why BYTO isn't around. We were dying a slow death and this place is pretty awesome overall. Here is one of the things that occupies my time - http://theworldisnotthatbig.com/ - I also have an online guide with 75 waterfalls in Taiwan and I'm starting to take trips all over Asia expanding my guide. I leave for Bali in 10 days.
  10. Somebody is advising the FO what orders to give. I'm fairly certain that the MLB pitching coach is listened to by the FO for a good part of their org philosophy.
  11. It's a weak everything shooting team and Flip is an idiot. Wiggins has an outside shot but the rest of that proposed lineup is pretty weak. Muhammad can shoot a little. Towns has potential but I wouldn't expect much shooting the first year or two and see that as part of his long term development. Martin is the Wolves version of Korver. I understand the need to play Muhammad and Lavine but I don't understand the hurry to run him out of town.
  12. Meyer is currently untradeable due to his current issues and injury history. He definitely isn't frontlining a major trade. These kind of trades are unbelievably rare. This isn't even a Garza for Delmon trade where both had played in the majors a little and team needs/surpluses matched up perfectly. Prospect for prospect trades almost never happen especially when the Red Sox starting catcher is Ryan Hanigan. And then making it a multiple prospect trade for a borderline star prospect make it even rarer. Here's the kind of trade that is conceivable. Berrios/Gordon for Lucroy or Sano for Lucroy.
  13. He has more power than either Santana or Escobar but in absolutely no way should Polanco be an MLB middle of the lineup guy. I don't know what has given you this idea.
  14. What the hell is going on with Parker? This didn't have to be a big deal but he is acting upset that we (or rather I) are asking him to follow the rules. He knows the rules, he has broken them every week this season (getting 3 extra wins) and continued to break them this last week after he was politely reminded that it was against the rules. Ben - you can't use Lorenzen as a RP'er despite his eligiblity (unless he is pitching as a RP'er). it must feel good to see Hoffman come back so quickly. I think you are on the path to battling for a playoff spot. I think I'm stuck at the good enough to make the playoffs most years but lacking the true firepower to win it.
  15. I see a problem with having Muhammad and Wiggins on the court together. Assumptions: Towns is picked #1 (or Okafor) and the Wolves can't/don't want to trade Gorgui/Pek. Rubio - PG Muhammad/Wiggins - wings Towns/Gorgui/Pek - the bigs The is an awful team at shooting outside and literally the entire other team is going to be clogging the paint defensively. The problem is that both Muhammad and Lavine have shown that they have decent potential and should play next season. The problem is caused by having a PG that can't shoot and two classic bigs playing down low. Of course I'm not sure if having Martin spreads out the floor enough to make the team better. Maybe Bjelica comes over and gives the team a Euro 4 (outside shooter and scorer) in the style of Dirk/Mirotic that helps. If the Wolves have more offense (especially shooting) from the 1/4/5 spots then Muhammad and Wiggins could be awesome together. Martin should be a 15 minute/gm sparkplug off of the bench next year but I'm not sure it will happen for the reasons you mention.
  16. Santana has had two months and his defense has not been good (not awful) but his bat has been terrible. Escobar hasn't been much better but Polanco is not the answer. 80 games at AA as a 21 year isn't enough to promote him to the majors. He isn't Carlos Correa or a phenom. He might be an answer next year though.
  17. Should the Wolves approach the offseason trying to win games next season? Or should the FO tank in the offseason? Last year the Thad Young part of the Love trade was criticized and ultimately looks awful (Young didn't fit). With a healthy(ier) Rubio, Pek, Martin and an untraded Brewer I think they would have won 25-30 games but they unintentionally tanked into the top pick and might have changed the franchise long term. Obviously it would be nice to redo the Thad Young trade (although the pick is delayed and probably close to #20) but do you absolutely avoid making any moves similar to this during the next offseason. For example do you do anything to trade martin (even include a 2nd rd pick) and get nothing back. Or trade nothing for a solid veteran like David Lee to hold down PF for a year. That would of course depend on what happens with Bjelica and/or Dieng but somebody has to play PF next year.
  18. You can't keep every pitcher in the hopes that they become a decent middle reliever. The K:BB ratio is really nice but his swstr% is really low so it would be a surprise if he continued getting K's. On the plus side his velocity bumped up quite a bit and he isn't a soft tosser anymore.
  19. I wouldn't trade Sano for Hamels. I wait for Loria to blow up the Marlins and go after Stanton. Or some other younger star that has 3 years on his contract. If that doesn't present itself then I move Sano to wherever is available that he can handle (likely RF).
  20. There is absolutely no indication that he would hold back a MLB promotion because of minor league playoffs. It doesn't effect Buxton's MLB path if he spends another month in AA instead of going to AAA. Same goes for Hu. And Gonsalves. And any other prospect.
  21. I would trade prospects but I haven't seen a reasonable target mentioned yet. I don't see them going after a blockbuster deal like Hamels or Tulo. I would probably be interested in something that doesn't involve Buxton or Sano but that won't be enough.
  22. Voting for the All-Stars is a joke but saying who you think All-Stars are is alright. Dozier has the best argument amongst Twins to be an AS starter. It's hard to argue that Plouffe is having a better season than Donaldson and there are another 3-4 3B having similar seasons.
  23. You might consider a guy like Howard in July if he was a FA at the end of the season but you don't want to head into a 2nd season with a player as positionally inflexible and declining like Howard. It's not really a money thing but rather a horrible way to hamstring a roster since you almost have to give a guy like Howard a roster/starting spot. Bringing him in during July gives you August to give him a shot and then rosters expand in Sept and it doesn't hurt if he doesn't work out. I also disagree with whoever said that Howard playing bad defense hurt his WAR value. Howard's poor WAR is from him hitting .718, .784 and .690 OPS's in a notorious hitters park in the NL. Does anyone really think those numbers are going to translate well to Target Field for a lefthander? I would take Ben Revere for one of the Harrison/Kepler/Walker types that the Twins have. I don't care how awesome Hicks defense is. He is awful. I would strongly prefer to have Revere's empty .300 average and peashooter out there. When Buxton is ready he becomes the ultimate 4th OF'er/pinch runner.
  24. I will throw in Duensing. But Howard sucks and Revere becomes irrelevant for the Twins when Buxton is called up.
  25. I would be on board with a Jose Bautista move for Adam Walker, Max Kepler, Harrison level prospects. He is actually good while Howard can't be expected to be better than Vargas or Pinto. He is really that bad.
