  1. Parmelee was starting in RF. Doumit was starting at DH. Plouffe was starting at 3B. Arcia was young and is probably the only realistic backup if someone got injured. Long term the Twins have a lot of OF'ers in the system but that doesn't mean you can replace 3 OF'ers by opening day. I think Ryan might have preferred to trade Willy instead of Revere but he had a good offer on the table. At that point you can't delay trade talks and try to set something up for Willingham. He was probably hoping that Willy could have a nice year and trade at the deadline but that isn't happening now.
  2. I think they were shopping Span aggressively because they had Revere. I think they also put Revere out there but didn't plan on trading both of them. Once that happened Willy was removed from the market and might not have been actively on it while TR was working on a Span/Revere deal.
  3. In reality though none of us know what was or would have been offered but I remember several that flat out wouldn't have traded Willingham last offseason for a myriad of reasons. And those same people insisted that he wasn't injury prone. The injury doesn't bother me much right now since it guarantees Parmelee full time AB's and might get Colabello some part time AB's. Willingham is a nice bat to have in the org next year but it's possible that the Twins could have gotten a decent prospect if they had shopped him harder. I think the Twins focused on trading one of their 2 CF'ers to free up playing and they ended up trading both because they liked the offers. At that point they weren't going to trade a 3rd OF'er in one offseason.
  4. In addition to different rankings by different teams and online 'scouts' I also think it is better to sign many guys in the 500K-1M range than just targeting the top guy. So far the Twins have one of the top guys and they have signed 1 more mid range guy with enough bonus money for 3 more mid range guys. One reason that I think the Twins zero'd in on Diaz is that he fits the classic slugger profile. The might lack MI and SP'ing prospects but they don't have a lot of classic slugger prospects either. Everyone on the team doesn't need to be able to sprints...
  5. Those are really good packages for him. We're talking about guys that are top 25ish prospects and 3 of them are critical needs for the Twins. Castellanos is just really good. Another guy to add to that list is Kyle Crick from SF. Good upside.
  6. I love it how the team signs a top talent and people still complain about them being cheap. They have also said that they will spend all of their bonus pool money. This comes a year after signing Minier and Thorpe and spending all of their bonus money. I think some will never be happy.
  7. You guys really need to take Bogaerts out of all offers for Perkins (and whatever filler you put in). I would trade perkins for Barnes or Webster. I would trade Perkins for Castellanos - I don't care if he's another OF'er. He's a potential middle of the order RH'd bat. It's a bit of a reach but I would trade Perkins for Alen Hanson and a borderline top 100 guy. Don't dismiss hanson because he was #61 (or something) on a preseason list. he will be a borderline top 25 prospect next offseason and he plays SS. Perkins is a 30 yr old pitcher. he might be great for 5 more years or he might blow out his UCL. Prospects are risky but 30+ yr old pitchers are not exactly safe picks either.
  8. When did the Braves and Cards rebuild? The Nats rebuilt through the farm, 2 elite #1 picks, stole Gio for spare prospects and signed one significant FA. That FA has been a bust. All three of these are poor examples of using FA as part of rebuilding. They are using FA to add to pretty good teams. The Pirates/Royals are poor examples but not because the Royals' recent prospects busted. The reason is that for over a decade they completely neglected their farm systems. They weren't active in int'l FA. They repeatedly took lesser talented and cheaper draft picks. They stunk at the MLB level and they stunk at the MiLB level. About 5 years ago both teams got serious about their farm system and started spending big money on overslot picks and int'l FA's. The Royals prospects have disappointed (it happens) but the Pirates have the best record in baseball (they are a bit lucky) due to homegrown players and MLB castoffs.
  9. Okay... 90% money and 10% relationships.
  10. I will be the first to criticize this offseason for the Twins. They could have spent more money and done it better but FA isn't where you build a team. I wanted the Twins to acquire some better stopgaps that could actually have trade value. An example of this is Jason Frasor who could add some depth to the bullpen and either be traded himself or make it easier to trade Perkins if a really good deal is on the table. Ironically everyone's favorite whipping boy this offseason has performed better than almost every starter in the <70M price range. In fact the Twins have made several nice FA moves the last two seasons and haven't been burned in FA either.
  11. A counter argument to the Royals/Pirates is the Cubs/Mets. For the better part of a decade they have been adding older, breaking down FA's, rushing prospects to help now and trading prospects for help now. And this has resulted in really expensive losing teams that were built on terrible foundations. Both teams are now shedding payroll and have started building a farm system recently. Prospects can bust and they will bust in the Twins system but it's how you rebuild.
  12. And he just hit a HR to extend his hitting streak one more game.
  13. kepler already is a borderline top 100 prospect and Polanco is probably in the top 150 at this point. These kind of prospects aren't exposed in Rule V even if it doesn't make sense for a team to draft them and keep them in the majors all year.
  14. Harrison and Walker go deep as life w/o Buxton is okay for CR.
  15. It's a risky move but people were talking about giving guys like Saunders 20-25M/3yrs. If the scouting reports actually match his stuff then 60/5yrs is not a bad deal. This team needs to add pitching talent that can help the team long term. Picking up non-elite 30+ yr olds for 8-10M/yr doesn't really do much long term. A 26 yr old with pretty good stuff would be a huge get for the Twins even if it is risky.
  16. I like Colabello more every week and I really hope some playing time opens up after the trade deadline with one or two players getting traded. I am patient enough to wait a month though.
  17. Being this bad is bad luck but he also wasn't that good in Cedar Rapids. He had an okay K rate there as a college pitcher (more developed than the competition) and typically K rates drop as they move up. 3 starts don't mean anything but I think he moves back to the bullpen in a year. Same for Melatokis.
  18. Gallardo does not interest me. He looks like he is falling apart and his perceived value is much higher than his actual value. Getting Cliff Lee would be awesome but that's just not happening.
  19. We have a total of 4 teams in Taiwan's pro ball league but we had Manny for 2-3 months.
  20. I'm a prospect and a draft guy but I strongly dislike this idea. If somebody wants to make the argument that you don't sign a bunch of mediocre veterans that will block prospects then that's okay even if it costs you a couple of wins. If someone suggests trading veterans to add minor league talent then that's okay. If someone suggests playing a prospect over a veteran then that's fine. If someone wants the Twins to lose simply to improve draft position then I disagree. I know that you are going to spin this but losing for the sake of losing reinforces a bad precedent.
  21. I think kepler was unfairly dropped because he started the season late. He was in my top ten before the season and that didn't change regardless of the hot starts of Polanco, Walker, Vargas, etc...
  22. I would actually like Parmelee to play everyday right now but imo you start doumit/Willingham/Morneau almost all of the time trying to build up their trade value before the deadline. There's only one other place for Parmelee to play and Arcia is a must start. That's why Parmelee's best spot is in the minors getting regular AB's for a month. Hopefully the Twins are able to trade one of the veterans and parmelee comes back up to start for the final 2 months.
  23. So all of the teams in the AL East are above .500. Is there a bias involved still?
  24. One of my favorite players all time and I'm enjoying his season on my fantasy team. He's always been a very good fastball hitter and off speed pitches move less in the dry, high altitude air so this success shouldn't be a complete suprise. Now if he can just stay off of the DL.
  25. I don't think it matters who is linked to Zapata. There are only 3 teams with more money to offer him unless someone trades for bonus pool money. Most of these prospects will sign with whichever team offers the most money.
