  1. This doesn't surprise me at all. My arm hurt a little after watching video of two of Twins RP'ers from last year draft (I think Bard and Chargois). I understand why they are tough to hit but their mechanics did not look good at all.
  2. I'm surprised at how many negative posts there are about the Morneau trade (mostly dumping) considering that there were an almost equal number of criticisms of the FO for not doing this exact thing a couple of days ago. I would have just kept Morneau but this trade isn't a travesty. This is his trade value. And I think Presley is a better 4th OF'er option than some give him credit for. He's a bit redundant with Mastro around but he has only played 10 games this season. And CF depth killed the MLB Twins this year.
  3. Archer's BB rate was over 4 (career - 5.01 BB/9) at pretty much every stop in the minors. I saw him pitch earlier this year and he has a lot of movement on his pitches. Right now he's getting a lot of swings helping him out but that will change (my opinion). I think he might be a solid 3/4 pitcher (with downside) but Garza is a good 2/3 on a playoff team. Stating that Lee has a .750 MiLB OPS is a lazy analysis. It's only that high due to a .380 BAPIP last year. In the high minors he's striking 20% of the time and projects to have very little power. He can be an MLB caliber SS with good defense and a .650 OPS. Solid player. Like a better version of Florimon. An analysis of this trade shows that the Rays traded a very good pitcher for two players that might be okay and contribute 3 years later. This is not the kind of move that I want the Twins to be making when they are a playoff contender. In fact I want the Twins to make the exact opposite moves when they are a playoff contender. And I would be extremely disappointed if the Twins (with Target Field) were setting up to trade a Cy Young candidate 2 years before he hit FA. Everything that is being praised about the Rays in this thread is the small market mindset that the Twins used in the Metrodome. This should not be the SOP going forward.
  4. Please stop holding the Rays up as an example of how the Twins should do business. I would be pissed if the current Twins were trying to run a playoff team on 50-60M budget like the twins from a decade ago. For example I would be pissed if a 90 win Twins team was trading away a Cy Young caliber pitcher like Price. I also would have taken 3 yrs of prime Garza instead of the a talented pitcher that has no clue where the ball is going, an all glove mediocre hit SS and a crappy OF'er. It has worked for the Rays to trade a few pieces away while still contending but that doesn't mean that is the route the Twins should take when they return to playoff baseball. The biggest reason that it has worked is that the Rays did a great job and built a stacked farm system (mostly with pitchers). They have had guys like Niemann, Hellickson, Cobb and Moore to put into the rotation. That's what the Twins should be copying instead of running a playoff baseball team on a shoestring budget.
  5. YES And that's why they are personally scouting him in Japan?
  6. Do you really think that the team would solely base their player evaluation on one player that failed? The same offseason that the Twins signed Nishioka they bid 7.7M on Iwakuma. He came a year later (A's didn't sign him) and has been excellent for the M's. It also seems that Japanese (and other Asian) pitchers fare pretty well in the US.

    Syria

The problem is that the UN is powerless. It's the right idea since no single country should be in a position to decide which conflicts are just/unjust. The problem is that the UN members have self interest and it stalls any significant action. In this case it is Russia and possibly a few others. Do not want any part of Syria. Stay out.
  8. Plouffe has been just awful for 2 months and I think his time as a starter is coming to an end. A 3Bman that can play MI does have a place on a roster if he's only a LHP'ing masher. He replaces the 2nd futility IF'er that the team loves to carry when it doesn't have 3 catchers. Of course he will probably have a 10 HR September now.
  9. Kubel has pretty much no value to the DBacks. He probably isn't even playable considering AZ's OF depth. Morneau still has value to the Twins. it's one thing to DFA (and get basically nothing back) a bad player that has been part of your team for 2 years and completely sucked for one of them. It's another to DFA one team's favorite players of the last decade that is actually better than any option they have. Making that move to get a fringe prospect and save a 200K doesn't do anything for the org and adds to the negative PR (casual fans) for the club.
  10. It's a blind bid and the best offer wins. And the team only wins the right to negotiate. As a comparison the Rangers paid a 51M posting fee for Darvish and signed him for 56M/6 years. Tanaka is obviously not Darvish but teams are throwing money around so I wouldn't be surprised if it took 30+M to win the posting fee. I have no idea if he's worth it but they are at least checking him out so that's good.
  11. Not to mention that Avery kind of sucks. I'm glad that the Twins were asking for a legit prospect for Willy. I find it funny how many on this board felt that Willingham shouldn't even be on the block before the season began and now many think he should be given away for nothing. Or that some think the Twins don't spend enough money and that they should send Willy packing for basically nothing in return. willingham is the kind of veteran gamble the team should be taking while the prospects are coming up. He's cheapish with one year left on his contract and I really don't want guys like Arcia and Sano pressed into the 3/4 spots in the order like Hicks led off this year.
  12. I think you just keep Willingham, possibly part ways with Morneau and reduce Doumit's playing time. He's the one guy that is a legit middle of the order bat that can allow Arcia and later on Sano to bat lower in the lineup and take some pressure off of them. Just because the Twins are rebuilding doesn't mean they should have 8 young players and Mauer in the lineup. At this point I might bring back Morneau as well since Parmelee isn't hitting anywhere this year. He isn't having a great year but at least he's an actual MLB hitter. Put Mauer at 1B against lefties and Doumit behind the plate those days.
  13. Nobody ever said Sanchez wasn't a good pitcher. This year he is elite and that wasn't predictable at all. A reasonable person would have projected him to be in the high 3's this year considering a move to the American League. And then declining a little in each year of his contract. But that doesn't really matter since it would have taken a 90M offer to make contact and possibly 100M to sign him. This is not the neighborhood of pitcher that you would have replaced Correia or Pelfrey with. And I'm more interested in guys like Tanaka or Guerrero since they are likely available for less than half of that.
  14. Sanchez was a good pitcher but he wasn't 80-100M good before this season. And that price range isn't at all comparable to the 5-50M group of pitchers that have mostly pitched between average (a stretch at that) and awful. Correia and Pelfrey compare very favorably to almost every pitcher in that group even though they were cheaper. The seasons that Corriea and Pelfrey have had are not unreasonably good compared to their career either. I'm not sure people feel like everyone needs to be labeled as a Ryan lover or hater. I have been quite critical of Ryan in the past and will continue to be. I won't be critical because Ryan didn't sign a bunch of declining veterans that aren't part of the long term plans for the sake of spending money. By not doing so the Twins are actually in a position to make a splash after one of the 3 big int'l FA's mentioned in this thread. That doesn't mean they will do it but it's more likely than if they had 50M tied up in Edwin Jackson and Joe Saunders. And they wouldn't be much better if they had signed these (types of) FA's.
  15. gordon is a legit 1st rd'er but Forbes is mouth watering.
  16. A 3rd high upside SS in the top half of the first rd to go with Turner and Gatewood. I don't care if HS'ers take 3-5 yrs to make it I like the upside. Several arms look real nice also. 15. Ti'quan Forbes, SS, Columbia HS (MS), Ole Miss commit Quick Take: Athletic 6'4 prep shortstop has huge potential: he racks up hits in games off top pitching and is one of the youngest players in the draft class.
  17. His future is utility man so it probably makes sense for him to have played 2B and 3B quite a bit before getting to the majors.
  18. Yet the Twins have forfeited CF this year.
  19. Sounds easy... I hope you realize that Correia and Pelfrey are pitching similar to most of the pitchers in the <50M price from the last two seasons. Yes, there are a few exceptions but for the most part this tier of pitcher has a 4.25-5.50 ERA. there is no doubt that Ryan could have spent more money and even have spent it better but we most likely would have gotten similar production from a sexier name unless the Twins really went all in on Greinke (my actual suggestion). Sanchez moved to the AL and is by far having his best season ever so that wasn't exactly predictable. The biggest problem with Pelfrey wasn't signing him but rather starting him in the majors 10 months after TJ. He has actually been decent in the second half of the season.
  20. One more year I think. Kepler shouldn't move to first permanently anytime soon but splitting time between 1B and the OF is a good plan. Why? Because the team is loaded with OF'ers so his path to the majors could be at 1B and transitioning from OF to IF is not an easy one.
  21. An author pretty much loses any credibility when he puts 8 1st or 2nd year players in a starting lineup. He further loses credibility when he thinks that will be the best team in 2015. I'm hoping that a few prospects are lotto hits and are establishing themselves as above average MLB'ers in 2015. I also think 2015 is when we start getting excited about the Twins again.
  22. Would you really complain if the Twins signed a likely #3 starter that was 25 yrs old? I absolutely wouldn't.
  23. I hope everyone actually read the article and realize that this is only the opinion of Tom Powers and not the org. So far Sano is showing that he can at least play the position and Plouffe has done nothing to show that he should be part of the long term plans at 3B. After Plouffe there is almost nothing at 3B for the Twins. Romero isn't a starter and Harrison's defense is just as suspect as Sano's. If the Twins had an .800+ OPS average or better fielding 3Bman that was part of the long term plans then Sano would likely be ticketed to 1B. but, umm, yeah...
  24. I think it's incredibly meaningful. It shows just how incredible Sano's season is. He is tops on the list that includes anyone and everyone. Maybe you don't like isoP but a similar list of pretty much any stat that included all players (including older players) would show a similar list of flameouts and AAAA all-stars.
  25. Ugh just kill me now. Matt Harvey of New York Mets has partial tear in elbow - ESPN New York Somehow I still have a decent rotation without Harvey. I think most teams would be happy with Sale/Holland/Garza/Lackey/Buehrle/Estrada.
