  1. Casilla had amazing raw talent but he couldn't make enough routine plays to be pretty good defensively. That wasn't driven by Twins, that was all on him. Dozier deserves to be mentioned as a candidate but he hasn't spent enough time in the majors to get an award like this (he just isn't well enough known) especially when there are several other very strong candidates.
  2. How is this a problem? I see Sano having a historical season when compared vs anyone and everyone that has played in the FSL and EL. It doesn't matter if they are much older, incredibly lucky compared to their careers or one of the best young players in the game.
  3. Bring it home for BYTO. Billy Buck's team is solid but very beatable. My team had a cold week and my bench was awesome so I missed out on a lot of points.
  4. Sano has 1284 MiLB AB's and a .287 isoP. And his isoP is trending upward so I'm not concerned.
  5. Looks like I'm a goner and ironically the deciding factor was my Jose Fernandez - CarGo trade. Jose will probably be shut down at some point but he's been awesome and CarGo is hurt.
  6. I don't think you really understand the AFL. It's full of top prospects.
  7. This has complete disaster written all over it. They are going to have a difficult time smoothly transitioning from the last trilogy with a new actor already. Toss in the Superman vs Batman angle and the movie will just become a mess. Throw in a little (too much) Affleck and it's a disaster. The biggest problem with Affleck in the role is that he doesn't become Bruce Wayne. Bruce Wayne becomes Affleck (ick). The same thing happened when he was Jack Ryan. That was awful. I also can't see Affleck as badass Batman. There will be sucky one liners when he is kicking the crap out of someone. I can't think of any Affleck roles that I liked since the 90's and probably the only reason I liked those were because he was a supporting role in all of those movies. I was hoping for a new Batman that didn't have Bruce Wayne like the final Dark Knight movie setup. This would have brought some new angles to the film.
  8. There should be no issue sending buxton to AFL unless he is getting worn down. It certainly doesn't look that way considering the way that he is playing. I don't remember who suggested but the AFL is not for flawed players. It's like a AA all-star league and the Twins usually have to send flawed players because they don't have much for talent in the upper minors. Hicks had a historically bad month and followed by 3 decent months although there are some big concerns in the plate discipline area. He will be option A for CF next year with Mastro as a backup and Buxton probably being a midseason callup.
  9. There are several loopholes that can explain why the Cubs/Rangers did what they did. And maybe some others. 1st - Once you have started incurring penalties then you might as well break the soft cap by as much as possible since the penalties don't get worse as you spend more. IIRC the Cubs signed two top 30 talents after they had spent their allotted money. 2nd - you don't lose your cap space the following season so they can trade it away. 3rd - The penalties only affect one season. So the Cubs probably signed as many prospects in one year as they would have if they in 2 normal years. Those prospects will also be one year closer to the majors since it takes int'l 16 yr old a long time to make it.
  10. Of course there are exceptions but the big one is simply the act of throwing a ball overhand. Going from pitching every 7 days to every 5 days and longer seasons make things even worse.
  11. I think I might lose it if one more person says don't sign him because he won't stick at SS and the Twins already have Rosario. I like Rosario a lot but he's not a guaranteed thing and you can't even say that Rosario will hit better than Guerrero (or vice versa). I think most would prefer signing Abreu but I wouldn't be surprised if Abreu got 80M while Guerrero is probably in the 30-40M range.
  12. I don't think anyone has mentioned it but Rosario should be eligible to go to the AFL (I think). I can understand Sano making a case for a September promotion due to being an otherworldly talent. Rosario doesn't. He's good but the AFL would be better and then let him spend 1/2 a year in the minors next year while letting Dozier prove himself. If Dozier keeps hitting and playing good defense this is a good problem and I don't think it's an issue to move Dozier over to SS when Rosario is ready.
  13. I disagree. HS and even college players simply don't log as many innings as minor and major league players. Someone with poor mechanics can avoid an injury with a lighter workload. They can also survive in HS and even college w/o throwing as many breaking balls which put more stress on the arm. I'm sure that there are some cases where tinkering causes injuries but bad mechanics are usually bad mechanics. I remember watching video of the relief pitchers from last year's draft. I wasn't against converting RP'ers to starters but I couldn't understand how a couple of those guys would last with a starters workload. My arm hurt just watching them and 2 of those picks have barely pitched this season.
  14. I wouldn't exactly use Ryan's track from more than a decade ago against him. They were basically operating with a zero int'l FA budget at the time. They weren't even signing the 500K guys (AFAIK) like Jorge, Thorpe, and Miguel Gonzalez at that time. Based on this thread getting 4-5 prospects from that group along with a top talent is seen as a disappointment.
  15. Aren't a majority of the Twins prospects in A ball? If the Twins went the Stanton route then they would have to follow this move up with 2-3 other blockbusters. For example trade half the farm for Stanton, sign Cano (only elite player available), sign JJohnson (hope for the best) and trade for another solid pitcher. Even at this point the team is still full of holes. For the Red Sox trading for stanton makes a lot of sense.
  16. You probably need to include Duensing and Casilla.
  17. I think we need to wait until the signing period is actually over and we know how much money they have spent and who they have actually signed. It's also important to remember that in int'l FA it's usually better to have quantity rather than only a couple of top signees. I can understand the initial disappointment though.
  18. I actually think you call up Sano for September and make it very clear that he is starting next year in AAA and will only play a little. There are possible financial ramifications (less so if he goes back to AAA next year) but September callups were great exposure to majors. A nice reward for top prospects and also for the fans even if they didn't play that often. It's really too bad that counting days (arb clock) has become so important for franchises.
  19. But it continues to show just how bad he is as a player. I was very happy when that trade happened.
  20. I find 'follow the Cardinals (or any other team) model' to be rather generic and even misleading. The Cardinals success in the last decade was built around a lucky late rd pick (Pujols), an ace that had been released by the Jays with 5.00 career ERA and later drafting/developing an ace (Wainwright). When you have that then it makes a lot of sense to trade for Holliday, sign Beltran and any other going for it move they made. The don't have that and aren't even close. Perhaps Sano or Buxton become that stud to go with Mauer and they find a way to find some pitching but it's not as simple as 'just follow the Cardinals model'.
  21. I said it before but the Twins need to worry less about what position a player plays and get good players. Hopefully they can find MI'ers and SP'ers but they need talent. Singling out a position or two leads you to overlooking other good values.
  22. Nobody should have expected Gibson to be an ace ever.
  23. Some guys take this don't spend on a rebuilding team bit too far but most simply don't want to be committing 12-16M/yr for 4-5 yrs on guys that probably will be below average by the end of their contracts. Edwin Jackson I'm talking about you. Buehrle don't act like I can't see you. Guerrero is rumored to be available for less and he is in his prime right now. if the Twins like this guy then lets spend some money.
  24. He routinely got lit up in AAA early in the season. Overall his numbers were okay but things could have been ugly in the majors. Or we could have had more of this 6+ERA that he is currently putting up. I think Gibson starting in the minors and staying down for as long as he did had to with him not looking great even though he threw some nice games.
  25. Your arguments so far in this thread: A) If he can't play short then I don't want to block Rosario We got burned by Nishi so maybe the Twins shouldn't pursue high dollar int'l FA's. C) He will be 26/27 and sat out 2 years. This is pretty standard for Cuban FA's. It sounds like you would argue against using an entire avenue of player acquisition to make the team better. D) 27 teams aren't rumored to be in the mix so there must be something wrong with him. This is actually pretty common in Cuban and even normal FA. Only one team was in on Puig and the rest of the baseball world (FO's and writers) thought the Dodgers were completely crazy signing him for 40+M. Obviously the Twins will have to scout him and they will have significantly better resources than any of us but the fact that they are interested has me interested.
