  1. That's kind of my point with Lincecum. The Twins absolutely have to sign someone this year and every option has flaws. the guys I like are Tanaka, Garza and Lincecum. It remains to be seen if the Twins will spend 100+M on Tanaka and I don't see any chance that Garza returns.
  2. Konerko would be a fine signing if the team didn't already have Willingham and Doumit filling the role of aging players that shouldn't play in the field. 2 of those types is probably too many and 3 is just silly for a rebuilding team.
  3. I want the one that projects better at the MLB level. Poor plate discipline has derailed too many prospects that had great MiLB stats.
  4. Opponents have a .243 BA against so you're not actually using any stats to make your argument. 2012 was a bad season and then he improved his BB rate. The big thing that has hurt him the last two years is HR's but this is something with a sample size of 20/season. And at the end of the day the Twins basically need to sign someone. Tanaka is likely getting 100+M. Garza isn't coming back. Kuroda is really old and he will resign with the Yankees. Hughes is someone that is intriguing but he has actually always performed. Josh Johnson pitches about 80 innings/season. Nolasco has always underperformed. Haren has really gone backwards and has fairly mediocre stuff if you watch him. Pretty soon you will find yourself shopping in the Correia/Saunders/Blanton neighborhood. If these questions didn't exist about Lincecum he would be getting a 100+M contract.
  5. Nobody was making statistical decisions based on this year's L/R splits. His stats hitting lefthanded reinforce Hicks' biggest question mark coming up through the minors. He has always struggled from the left side of the plate.
  6. Harrison neither stumbled nor excelled this season. It was a nice season and scouts love his swing but questions remain. Looking at John's rankings, there is not anyone below him that I would move up above him. He kind of reminds me of this guy - Matt Davidson - Matt Davidson » Statistics » Batting | FanGraphs Baseball - A HS 3Bman with questionable defense and a good bat that hasn't failed nor dominated yet.
  7. It's okay to say that you don't like strikeouts. I understand the concern about lack of velocity but looking at HR's is a pretty small sample even if it's over two seasons. It's one reason that xFIP is popular.
  8. I wouldn't have been against signing Abreu but my eyes (in person) saw a youngster that moved like a 32 yr old with a really long swing. He has put up some ridiculous numbers in international competition but that international competition wasn't always MLB caliber and sometimes that is the step where long swings get exposed. I'm also hoping that the Twins are hanging onto their cash to make a good pitcher signings and possibly even add a Nick Swisher type. Obviously Choo will be very expensive but I would love Mauer/Choo back to back with guys like Buxton/Sano/Arcia/rosario surrounding them in a couple of years.
  9. Until he proves he can hit from the left side, he is a 4th OF'er.
  10. I would give up a 2nd rd pick easily for Lincecum. Lincecum is not 2008/2009 Cy Young Lincecum but his K's and swstr% (important stats for me) are both great and possibly double the typical Twins pitcher. He had an awful 2012 but he's been plagued by bad luck (Hr/FB% and LOB%). tbh - I would be more interested 3-4 yrs of Lincecum at 50ish million (I am on my own here I know) than spending 100+M on Tanaka. the better option would be to get both. that is impossible though... Josh Johnson is somebody that doesn't interest me unless we are talking 2 yrs 20M (or less). In a year or two he's going to be compared to Rich Harden. Great pitcher that just can't stay healthy. 1000 innings in 8 pro seasons and he's missed over half of the last 2 seasons.
  11. The problem is that this plate discipline doesn't typically improve. Typically it gets worse due to pitchers with much better secondary offerings. The other problem with your RBI theory is that hitters that swing at bad pitches because they are trying to drive in runs are going to keep doing that as they move up in the minors. Regarding some other posts about Walker vs Harrison: We have been through this before. It's not Walker's age that is the issue but rather that he played 3 yrs of college ball so he should be more advanced than HS kids almost the same age. Walker is definitely intriguing but poor plate discipline and play in low A ball prevent him from being ranked really high despite his nice power. Additionally I like Polanco more than Harrison but that is more due to defensive value and Polanco's ability to make contact. It was nice to see some pop from him but I don't expect much power as he moves up. However he looks like a potential .285/.335/.385 MLB hitter. With solid defense that is an average to above average MI'er. Harrison has a sweet swing but his K's and modest power stats keep him from being ranked in my top 10.
  12. Possibly but that high profile teenager is subject to the int'l signing rules and would get <5M guaranteed and then have to wait several years in the minors before making the MiLB min for 3 more years before hitting arb. Not exactly a quicker path to the big money.
  13. I could probably tolerate a Correia type contract since he's roughly that level of pitcher and the Twins are short on actual MLB capable pitchers. But regardless of his quick return from TJ and the hope that he will do better next season he literally has no upside as a starter. He's 30 (in January) and literally has no upside beyond innings eating #4/5. A significant multi-year contract would work out as well as the Blackburn contract. tbh I want nothing to do with a guaranteed 2nd yr (like Corriea) but I'm already resigned to the Twins bringing him back and that's what it will take. If the guaranteed money is >15M then this board will be unreadable for a week and i will likely contribute to that nonsense.
  14. I think that new posting system is a pipedream. Why would Japan agree to it since it could result in substantially lower winning bids?
  15. From everything I have read he should be the Twins 3rd or 4th pitching acquisition that they can send to AAA if necessary. Spending 20+M on somebody like that seems silly. Now if we are talking about 5ish M then I am interested.
  16. Imo a 7.8/3.9 K/BB is rather pedestrian for a minor league RP'er that isn't young for his league. They aren't even that good for an MLB RP'er.
  17. He's a guy to watch since he's a hard thrower and sometimes those guys just click at some point in the majors and become really good. Or they just suck like Hoey. I think he falls into the 2nd category and I'm not very interested.
  18. I have no idea what you are talking about in the first paragraph. His K and BB rates have been consistent (mediocre) throughout the minors. Even if he gets a cup of coffee his upside is so low that he shouldn't rank anywhere near a top 20 list.
  19. This whole Ibarra argument is about a 24 yr old RP'er that typically walks 4+ batter in 9 innings? If you are a relief pitcher, kind of old and walk 4 every 9 innings then you better be striking out 15/9 in the minors. He had a nice ERA but I'm not sure if he is in my top 10 relief pitchers in the org.
  20. Miller was a top ten talent and he fell due to signability. The Cardinals simply were the team that made the choice to go way overslot to get him. That isn't really a scouting find but rather a popular strategy employed by 8-10 teams. Unfortunately the Twins avoided that strategy for the most part.
  21. In fairness let's use the correct numbers. 148M.
  22. Don't worry they will spin this as a positive and play this game again in February.
  23. His numbers were significantly better previous seasons. the issue is the recent injury and velocity loss and that he has never shown starter durability. You go after him hoping that he bounces back but this should be the 3rd or 4th starter added and you expect him to start him in AAA.
  24. 1) Agree but I think they are prepared to spend a lot more than people think but not as much as other teams. 2) I could see this happening but I'm indifferent to it. 3) I think we will see a 50M contract on a solid but not really good player 4) I'm already dreading the epic Sano opening day battles but I don't think there is any chance he is on the opening day roster. 5) I really hope that the Twins don't feel the need to get rid of an effective RP'er because of 2M. There's close to 50M available and it's not going to be spent anyway. Not surprisingly Duensing's numbers improved last year since he hasn't been jerked back and forth between the rotation and bullpen.
  25. If the Twins were even remotely close to the position that the Tigers are currently I would love for them to sign a guy like Cano and I wouldn't care about the 2nd half of the contract. But that's the whole point of signing elite players to mega contracts. The team needs to be able to take advantage of the first half of the contract when that player is elite. The Tigers could be a mini dynastry with Cabrera, Fielder and Cano in the lineup and Verlander, Scherzer, Sanchez and Fister in the rotation.
