  1. Fenway isn't some kind of hitter's paradise for lefties so there probably wouldn't be that much of an effect. His home/road OPS's (3 yrs) don't show a scary split either. Additionally you could look at http://www.hittrackeronline.com/detail.php?id=2013_4262&type=hitter 10 of his 14 HR's (19 out of 25 in 2012) would have been HR's in 20+ parks in baseball by their estimation. I will take their estimates over your WAG. It seems like most of the arguments against Salty are not actually factually based. We are talking about an easy .700+ catcher that deserves to be behind the plate (Doumit absolutely does not). If somebody prefers A.J. then that's fine but I'm just hoping they bring in somebody and 3/30 won't even make a dent into the available budget to find a starting pitcher or two.
  2. You should actually check his splits before leaping to conclusions.
  3. Peralta isn't worth this deal imo but St Louis just suffered through 450 PA's of Pete Kozma. One of the other options for the cardinals was a forced trade of one of their top young pitchers for a SS. I might not be a fan of Peralta but I completely understand this move by the Cards.
  4. I'm willing to take risks and I would love to sign him but locking up a pitcher that has never thrown a MLB pitch for 150-200M is silly regardless of the team. Especially when there are some questions in the scouting reports.
  5. he has 3 years of .740, .740 and .804 OPS's. I will take the .740 OPS from a solid defender for 3/30 anyday if it means that Doumit and Fryer rarely appear behind the plate. I like Pinto but he could easily be a huge disappointment.
  6. I have read numerous scouting reports that say Tanaka is not as talented as Darvish regardless of what his stats are or a couple of unnamed scouts trying to hype him up. Tanaka is a really good pitcher but in no way is he worth 21-29M/yr before he has even thrown an MLB pitch.
  7. I won't like you until the like button comes back.
  8. I think you need to take a different dose of reality. I would be absolutely shocked if the Twins had TOO MANY good starters at any point in the future. Good pitching prospects close to the majors still have high bust rates. And a lot of those prospects that you named aren't even close to the majors.
  9. Some corrections are needed. He has spent 3 seasons starting over half of the Red Sox games. Your link must be from >3 years ago. In his down seasons he still has put up a .740ish OPS. He doesn't have ridiculous home/away splits. Fenway is not an easy place for a lefty to hit either. It has a reputation as a hitter's park due to the Green Monster in left field.
  10. A) Mauer's catching skills had declined even before he moved. He was terrible at stopping balls in the dirt although he was probably pretty good at framing pitches. Mauer caught less than 1/2 of the games over the last 3 years while Doumit caught 50+ games in his two seasons. C) The catcher can only do so much. The pitchers have been awful. having Doumit behind the plate didn't help though. I'm not against a guy like A.J. but Salty is my preferred target even if he reverts to .235/.300/.450. That's fine for a catcher that seems to be solid behind the plate. 3/30 is not going to block the Twins from getting any pitcher that they really want.
  11. You just wish something like this would actually happen. Adding a good starter (Garza, Ervin or Ubaldo) shouldn't be out of the question. Adding a solid catcher could actually happen. Another starter like Hughes is unfortunately unreasonable for this FO. But that's not the greatest Twins blueprint ever. Subtract out Hughes and Joba and sign Capuano (2/14) and a legitimately good hitter like Choo (5/90). Completely unreasonable to expect but that gives you a nice lineup with Mauer, Choo, Willy, Dozier and Salty with Sano, Buxton, Rosario, Hicks coming up. And it's a survivable pitching staff - Garza, Capuano, Correia with Meyer and Gibson coming up and enough money to spend next year.
  12. You have to spend money wisely to be a good team. McCann is not wisely spent money for a rebuilding team. Perhaps this contract could be justified if a team was looking for one player to put them over the top but that definitely is not the Twins. Almost every other soon to be well paid FA makes more sense for the Twins.
  13. Tanaka is not Darvish though. Darvish was in another tier when he came from Japan. That should even out the new market (2 years later). If someone goes Dodgers nuts on bidding then you have to let him go regardless of the good match. And I don't really expect the Twins to be serious on Tanaka. I just hope they get one guy better than Arroyo.
  14. Quantity doesn't trump quality.
  15. I would sign him for 3/30. He's a good player and it solves the problem at catcher and possibly gives the Twins a trade asset in Pinto.
  16. I like the Perkins for Webster deal. Or Henry Owens. I also like matt Barnes quite a bit 9as a 2nd piece). The whole point of trading Perkins should be to bring in someone that is under contract longer than Perkins. Jackson and Porcello are FA's in 2 years.
  17. If the Twins signed McCann then they would be in the same situation as Mauer this offseason (needing to move from) well before the end of the contract. If the Twins spend big on a non-pitcher this year (which they won't) it should be for an OF'er. Regardless of the Twins OF prospect depth that is where the FA offensive talent is.
  18. I would love to sign Tanaka but only in the 100-125M range. 150-200M is completely crazy. Why not spend 60-90M on Jimenez, Garza or Ervin?
  19. My concern isn't really with Pinto but rather that there is no Plan B at catcher. It should surprise nobody if Pinto fell flat on his face as a rookie in the majors and needed some AAA time. We have seen this before most recently with Hicks and Dozier. What I'm scared of is that this could be a repeat of the CF situation last year.
  20. Capuano is fine in the Corriea mold. He probably a little better but I'm a little concerned about the NL West in a pitcher's park move to the AL. You sign a guy like this to get you through the next couple of year's respectably. If Capuano is available for 2/10-2/14 then this is a far better move than going after Arroyo for 3/36.
  21. This isn't really true. Guys have to actually make it to FA for it to be true and Price actually has 2 years left before free agency (I said 1 earlier). If the Twins could work out a Price trade involving Meyer and Rosario with a HUGE extension locking him up then I would do it instantly. The Twins won't be able to spend all of their available money for the next few years and Price will likely be 2x-3x more valuable than Meyer and Rosario over the next 6+ years. But this kind of move goes against everything that the Pohlads and TR believe in and I don't think Tampa does it unless Buxton/Sano are involved. That's why I mention the Rangers. They could dangle Profar for Price and then be the last team standing in the Cano sweepstakes. They probably couldn't lock him up but a Price/Darvish/Holland/Harrison rotation with Fielder/Cano/Beltre in the middle of the lineup could make them WS favorites.
  22. The Twins will be lucky if the All Star game bump offsets fan indifference for the lousy baseball that the Twins are playing. Attendance has dropped from 40K/game in 10/11 to 34K/game to 30K/game last year. They just flat out need to play better baseball otherwise that is going down further. But that is no excuse to spend 20-30M/yr on a pitcher like tanaka for 6-7 years. That is insanity.
  23. This is a fantasy trade (as in not a chance of happening). There is no way the Twins can pull this off w/o including one of Buxton or Sano and there isn't any indication that Price is signing a long extension (that I have read). Perhaps a team like Texas pulls it off but I'm guessing that Price reaches FA next year. I would hope that the Twins would open the vault for him but even that's pretty unlikely.
  24. There's no way I would pay 150-200M for Tanaka. Even if it was a 7 year contract we are talking about 21.5-28.5M/yr. that's silly money for a non-ace (upside) that has never thrown an MLB pitch.
  25. I'm comfortable with someone other than Mauer. I like Pinto's potential but I don't like him as plan A when plan B is Herrmann and plan C is awful.
