  1. The Twins should be targeting whichever top talent is still available at #5 regardless of position or HS/UNI experience. The hope is that there are at least 5 elite talents in the draft. Last year there were 4 imo and the Twins got the 4th which happened to be a HS'er. This year it looks like there are 3 pitchers in that mix (Rodon, Hoffman and Kolek) with Turner, Gatewood (seems like he could drop this spring), Jackson and a couple of others that could rise. but the pool of elite talents could change considerably before the draft. All of them should be on the radar but whether or not they are 1st rd'ers or top 5 picks is unknown.
  2. willingham won't be the small part of a platoon. If Sano is promoted Plouffe and Kubel would likely platoon and Willingham would move between LF and DH.
  3. Despite Colabello being a fringy MLB'er I am a big fan of him. His one chance at a roster spot is as a RH'd bench bat but that actually works out OK since Kubel has a chance at winning the DH role. It's not impossible to have a bench with Colabello, Mastro, Escobar and Suzuki. You kind of need someone to platoon with Kubel and Mastro should not be that guy. Parmelee kind of ends up being the odd man out since he's a lefty. Either he needs to beat out Kubel or Arcia starts in AAA imo.
  4. The problem with Herrmann is that he definitely doesn't have enough bat to not play catcher other than as a warm body. Primarily a lack of power for a non-catcher. Defensively reports are all over the place. If I actually felt confident that he was decent at catching I would like him more. But that really isn't the big issue that I have with Herrmann as the backup catcher this year. The big issue is if Herrmann is the backup is that there is almost no depth behind him anywhere in the minors until you get to Stuart Turner. Catching is a tough job and it's very likely that a catcher misses significant time. Pinto/Suzuki/Herrmann/Fryer in the MLB and AAA gives the Twins at least some depth
  5. The Twins should not for any reason carry a 3rd catcher but that doesn't mean Fryer should be DFA'd. I would like Fryer and Herrmann in AAA as depth. There are other guys that can be DFA'd.
  6. This is where the disconnect lies. Nobody is arguing that the Twins should take a HS player. They are disagreeing that there should be a preference towards a college pick. The Twins should consider ALL potential picks that are worth the #5 pick. There are college pitchers, HS pitchers, HS hitters and college hitters that are in the mix at #5. Eliminating a talent like Kolek, Gatewood or Jackson from consideration would be foolish for the Twins.
  7. When I think of a top 25 prospect in a strong and deep org I typically think of someone that is interesting in some way - tonkin/Goodrum/Jorge/ZJones. Gilmartin throwing 86-87 is completely uninteresting. If it helps maybe I should say he's not a prospect at that point.
  8. You continue to reference articles from a decade ago using draft data from 2 decades ago. That had some relevance a decade ago but it doesn't matter when you are talking about individual top of draft talents. At #5 talent needs to evaluated on a case by case basis. It would be extremely foolish to form an opinion 7 months before the draft that ALL high school players should be avoided at pick #5.
  9. Who is giving up on him? People are just saying that he's a bad defender.
  10. If his velocity stays at 86-87 he's barely a top 50 prospect. The problem with everyone's optimism is that in his 'good' season he still only struck out 6.5 batters/inning in AA.
  11. It's surprising that they would pay 1M when the max salary is only 300K. I don't think it's likely that Colabello comes back and is able to sign a guaranteed MLB contract. It's more likely that he goes to Japan if he is able to. 1+M is not uncommon for foreigners there.
  12. I would prefer to have Hermann and Fryer as depth (plan C and D) rather than plan B in case a rookie struggles. I could care less if Herrmann goes to AAA for an entire year (or forever).
  13. During the season when Baker got injured there were apparently remarks that Baker needed to toughen up and play through it. He later completely tore his UCL. MRI's are good but they don't show every strain.
  14. I can't imagine the payday is that good although I imagine he will get paid higher than the MLB min if the posting fee is 1M. I think Chris could be pretty successful in the Korea (or Japan). I'm not so sure about the MLB but he seems like a type that could put up some big numbers against AA/AAA competition. I don't disagree with this move but I find it ironic that TR is basically selling a player.
  15. Willingham's trade value is higher if he's healthy which is more likely at DH. I would like the Twins to sign another competent bat that hopefully plays better defense than Willy. Not much left aside from Morales and Cruz. And neither of these players are worth a 2nd rd pick for the Twins. Hopefully Arcia is ready to be up full time with the Twins. I'm optimistic long term about him but not in the short term. After that DH/LF will likely be rotation of Willy, Parmelee, Presley, possibly Mastro and eventually Plouffe. I am not a fan of this but other than a trade there aren't many options other than waiting for Buxton, possibly Rosario (moves to LF), Vargas and the rest of the prospects. I would like to get Jesus Montero if he's available relatively cheaply.
  16. Usually the extent of those scouting reports is referencing that Arcia played some CF in rookie ball. I think the visual observations from his time in the majors are a lot more relevant.
  17. I think I got more talent for Charlie Morton. At a certain point I think you need to run veterans like CC into the ground.
  18. That data was from 1.5 decades ago and it seems that it is not accurate any longer. Buxton and Stewart seem to be thought of pretty highly.
  19. But you're still ignoring that Lough also sucks. And don't even try to spin it that Lough sucks less. He sucks and isn't anything more than a bad 4th OF'er.
  20. You overrate Correia. he's a 4.50 career ERA pitcher (almost always in NL pitcher friendly parks) that has pitched 198 innings once. Blackburn was actually better during his 2 good seasons and then he fell apart. That's what happens to these fringy MLB'ers.
  21. There is absolutely nothing about this trade that indicates the scouting department thinks Gilmartin is a good prospect. I'm sure they will publicly say that he is someone that they have targeted for a long time but it doesn't change his mediocre prospect status. I would consider him a borderline top 25 prospect. Worth having but nothing to get excited about or even likely to be a MLB contributor.
  22. A .285 hitter that takes a walk with 40double/10HR power and 50+SB with acceptable SS defense is an "impact" player. Not to mention that he is a college player with a higher floor and is closer to the majors. I wouldn't have a problem if the Sox took Turner because then it becomes more likely that one of the top pitchers drops.
  23. I think it's borderline hilarious that people are trying to declare a winner and a loser in this trade.
  24. It's called prospect evaluation. Gilmartin is not a very good prospect. Even in his good season he didn't strike out many batters and his upside is the Correia, Blackburn or Diamond type of pitcher. He might make the majors and he might be fringy capable starter or reliever for awhile but it's more likely that he doesn't make contribute in the majors. And that's the point. This trade isn't about the prospect return. It's about moving Doumit in a trade (and the salary) instead of unceremoniously DFA'ing him (that wasn't going to happen).
