  1. 8M is pretty reasonable for a fringy top 100 prospect. The correct term to use is prospect. It's possible that he is only a utility player just like it's possible that Rosario never makes it as an MLB starter. He could also be a solid MLB player. Just because a team is willing to spend on prospects doesn't mean that breaking the bank open on fringy prospects is a wise idea. 8M I like but 20-30M on him a little silly from the information that is out there.
  2. That is kind of the worst case scenario actually. That probably means that the Twins are picking 5th in a 4 player draft and are left to choose between the next tier of players that would like to be guaranteed a below slot deal at #5 instead of taking a chance and falling to #10.
  3. Crawford doesn't appear to be a big fan of Turner's. I dislike these reasons for drafting Turner - fast track, speed and defense. He doesn't have to hit 20+ HR's but I want to read that he can hit.
  4. Same difference. The bottom half of the top 100 and the next 50 prospects aren't considerably different. The main point is that he is a decent prospect but he's not a great prospect and he got a substantial guaranteed sum. I think it's foolish to drop 20+M guaranteed on fringy top 100 prospect when a proven player as good as Ervin Santana could probably be had for 40ish M.
  5. I'm assuming the Sox would be looking for a B or C prospect as part of save face salary dump. A little bit like the Twins did with Hardy. It's not really important who the prospect is but it seems that they have kind of decided that De Aza isn't going to be on the team next season.
  6. And I would be against any moves for mediocre starters with Corriea/Pelfrey upside. Santana would step in as the Twins best starter and I'm in favor of that for the relative bargain that is possible.
  7. The Rosario comp is not meant to be a player comp but rather valuation comp. Diaz is a bottom half of a top 100 prospect type in my book. Is that worth 20M guaranteed since you don't have to give up any other assets? It will be interesting to see where he gets ranked next offseason (if he doesn't play much for the Cards) after a season of likely AAA ball and some time in the majors.
  8. Why are the names of Santana, Saunders, Pelfrey and Blackburn used in the same sentences? Right now adding depth doesn't do anything for the Twins rotation. Adding a pitcher that is better than every other starter (only Nolasco is close) would be a good get for this club.
  9. It should send them a message that this team isn't waiting for the nextnext year or the nextnextnext year to start winning. I would consider Santana to be the Twins best starter with Nolasco close behind. He's the kind of guy you add to the rotation - Pelfrey not so much. And despite everyone's concern that a good pitching prospect is being blocked that is not the case. It's extremely unlikely that the Twins make it through the season w/o an injury or two. In addition to that it should send a message to Gibson and May that they need to pitch better to get called up and even then they might have to wait their turn. Meyer isn't going to see significant time (>100 innings) with the Twins this year anyway after last season's injury. The unfortunate odd man out would be Deduno imo. many didn't expect him to be ready this spring but he's back pitching and doing well. At this point it looks like the 5th spot is his while worley and Diamond (still has a chance) compete for a bullpen spot or pack their bags. This is precisely why the Pelfrey move was so questionable at the time. It wasn't about the money but rather that it tied up another rotation spot with a no potential arm. Coincidentally Pelfrey makes about the same amount as Santana's 4th year.
  10. If he was a game changing shortstop then he would have gotten triple+ what he got. This isn't a bad deal and he could outperform this. What it comes down to is how much are you willing to pay for a prospect? I would value his prospect value and ETA roughly similar to Eddie Rosario with a better chance at being a SS and a little less bat. Would you feel comfortable giving a prospect like Eddie Rosario 20M guaranteed to add him to the org? In the past you could acquire extra talent in the draft or in int'l FA but most of those loopholes were closed in the last CBA and guys like Diaz are one of the only forms of prospects that can be added that only cost money.
  11. I think we saw last year that Hicks could do worse. Even if Hicks is up and getting AB's the Twins still don't have answers elsewhere in their OF. I think De Aza is going to get dumped because the White Sox have more or less committed to Eaton, Viciedo and Garcia in the OF with Konerko, Abreu and Dunn at 1b/DH.
  12. The Twins currently do not have any depth in the OF. In fact it's a position of weakness imo. Opening day lineup Presley - CF Arcia - RF ? - LF Willingham - DH This is pitiful despite Buxton coming up soon and there is still room in the OF especially since Willy is likely on the way out. Even if you're an optimist regarding Hicks there is still room in the OF for the next couple of seasons. And De Aza is sneaky good.
  13. Catcher is a bit different than other positions though. They always get days off and they are always dinged up. Having depth is good even if it's a no upside veteran.
  14. It's not based on a single player. It's based on the fact that young players routinely struggle. And when the backup is Eric Fryer then that young player is going to feel considerably more pressure because he knows that he is the guy. If Pinto is in a 50/50 playing time arrangement with Suzuki then he's getting plenty of AB's and he's getting days off to process all of stuff that is going on around him. This is especially needed as a rookie catcher that supposedly still needs work defensively.
  15. Did you enjoy the CF situation last year? Suzuki was brought in to give the team some depth. If Pinto struggles then the catcher situation for the Twins gets really ugly, really fast without Suzuki. I have no problem with Pinto catching half of the time this season as he adapts to the majors.
  16. A SS with a short swing that can chop it should have no bearing on the Twins draft. The things that will determine if the Twins draft a SS at #5. Can Turner drive the ball? Can Gatewood hit the ball? I read in between the lines of last year's scouting report and this has been my biggest concern about Gatewood. I think the original comment was something like 'his swing is beautiful in batting practice with everything that you want but it hasn't translated to in game dominance'.
  17. I think they might be overlooking Pinto some but this is a reason to temper your expectations this season with him.
  18. I also didn't like how that was handled. It sucks for Tim because this league requires a lot of extra work. I guess he just assumed (and was pissed) that people were ignoring him. I have spent most of my draft repicking the players that I wouldn't have dropped in the first place but whatever.
  19. I actually think the Fielder/Freeman trade was brilliant. Mostly because of Brantley though. He's actually a solid player that is much more than waiver wire fodder.
  20. I think you misinterpret my skepticism regarding those 3 hitters. Skepticism doesn't mean that you disregard them and move on to lower upside pitchers or pitchers with even more to prove than those hitters. I find myself rather liking Turner after being one of the first skeptics on the board. Drafting a potential Ellsbury at SS is worthy at #5. He does need to convince scouts that he has that much pop in his bat though. I am more confident in his defense lately though since it sounds like he is solid at SS but he has plus defensive tools and could be a plus defender at SS.
  21. The problem with this strategy is that the HS pitcher's control, secondary pitches and overall risk are all worse (typically) than Beede's. Another month of this and Beede will certainly be in my top 5 although he wasn't there before the season. I'm not as convinced that they all look good. Turner - I have argued for Turner in this thread but he does actually need to show some pop in his bat to be the #5 pick. It's not that he needs to hit X number of college HR's but he needs scouts to project to hit 10 HR's and plenty of doubles in the majors. Jackson - I need to be convinced that his bat is that good instead of him getting a significant bump simply because he plays catcher. Maybe he sticks at catcher but he needs to be drafted for his bat. Gatewood - He needs to transfer his outstanding tools into game performance. Again I don't care if he sticks at SS (it would be a bonus) but he needs to show that he will have a legit MLB bat if he's being drafted at #5.
  22. Catcher concussions should be the final impetus to a much different solution than just carrying more catchers to spread out the beating. If catcher concussions continue to be as bad as they have been recently then something more substantial has to be done for the players. Force all runners to slide and I don't think they have even begun to tap into better helmet/mask technology.
  23. The problem isn't that Plouffe is the starting 3Bman for the Twins. The problem is that the Twins starting lineup is filled with avg to below avg players. Dozier is headed into the season as one of the better hitters and he will barely top .300 OBP. On a good team Plouffe and Dozier would fill the bottom of the lineup.
  24. 3rd catcher - just say no And Pinto hopefully isn't DH'ing that much. I expect Pinto to hit very well for a catcher but it's unlikely to be impressive as a DH. I HOPE somebody is able to outhit Pinto as a DH but that might be wishful thinking.
  25. I don't think the service time is the big issue here although it does guarantee the Twins more of Sano's prime. the big thing that I see is that it gives a really young prospect a little time to adjust and learn about baseball. His raw skill has pushed him faster than most prospects in any org but he is still 20 years old. I really hope that Sano uses his time better than Liriano though.
