  1. If Meyer was as ready as Trout and would have even close to the same impact then he should be up. If the Twins were acting like a legitimate contender this offseason then they should have signed Ervin Santana and Drew which would likely have had a bigger impact than an extra 5 starts from Meyer. An extra 5 starts from a rookie pitcher are not going to be the difference maker. There's no guarantee that he doesn't get lit up since he hasn't even been that sharp in AAA so far. The frustrating part is that he's likely to spend more than half a season in AAA as the Twins throw spaghetti at the wall and see what sticks.
  2. Wasn't that last year?
  3. Can we seriously stop this nonsense? Every time I critique a player negatively it is considered that I am dismissing him from the conversation. The problem that the Twins face is that I see 3 pitchers and probably Jackson that have set themselves apart from the pack. Gordon is in the next tier but I'm not the biggest fan. And I don't subscribe to the he's interesting because he's a SS. Take the best player and worry about having 20 All-Star OF'ers later. A lot of guys can produce in HS (20 games) and still be all tools. He might be riskier than taking a HS arm this high in the draft.
  4. agent: Scott Boras It's unlikely that Meyer has a contract before he reaches arbitration but the important deadline (opening day) has passed. I have always contended that too much focus has been on the Super 2 deadline and not giving the player an extra year of arb. Teams certainly do it but that's just being cheap and taking advantage of the system. If a player is playing like an all star then pay them 5M in arb. The important thing is that his FA has been delayed by a year by not being on the opening day roster. I will trade 5+ starts this season for 30+ as a potential star in 6 years.
  5. I think people need to realize that suzuki posted a pair of excellent seasons at 24/25 and wasn't actually that bad the following two years (close to a .700 OPS at catcher). The strange thing is if he can break this downward trend (2 very good years, 2 fairly good years followed by 2 bad years).
  6. You certainly leave him at catcher for 2 seasons. At that point they should have some idea how much slower the path to the majors is at catcher and if he would be a liability there.
  7. The early knock on Gordon is that his brother might not have more power than Revere. That isn't and never was true of Nick. The question is though just how much power will he develop. He's definitely not going to be a Tulo type SS. From what I read I see more of what we expected out of Starlin Castro. .280+, 10-15 HR's and 10-20 SB's with solid defense at SS. One of the big problems with him at #5 is that he is all tools. Kind of like Aaron Hicks in some ways. He's the kind of prospect that could take 4+ years to get through the minors and turn average. Or never make it. tbh I have Gordon as a higher upside/lower floor version of Trea turner. I find it ironic that Trea Turner is now out of the conversation for some of you that were making a case for him. He's having basically the same season except his BAPIP dropped from .390 to .300 this year.
  8. I'm not even sure the Twins made an offer in the offseason. I also remember 3/45 but I think it was made during the season or in spring training. Basically the Twins had to make an offer to show that they tried but they didn't really make a serious offer. Now he's turning 39 in July and he's still going.
  9. He could do less damage... KC will get some more time (both will) since he actually pitched well sometime in the near past. Pelfrey has been all kinds of horrible except some some selective slicing and dicing of last year's splits. I would love to see Deduno back in the rotation with Mike Pelfrey relegated to the Eyre/Bass/Gray long man role until he gets some batters out.
  10. David Bromberg didn't get a chance despite easily leading the Midwest league and the FSL in K's. Leading a league in K's means that the player was healthy, didn't get promoted and can strikeout hitters. You will notice that Bromberg and May were also in the top 3 in BB's during those years. There's no doubt that he's a prospect but he's not a great one. He is imo as ready as he'll ever be though. Obviously he can refine and improve his game but we're talking about a 24 yr old with 700 MiLB innings. I also don't understand why everyone has been obsessed with this Keith Law quote. As pointed out earlier almost every scouting report has been saying these things forever.
  11. This is exactly what I was talking about when I said that he's as ready as he will ever be. The problem is that I don't think he's a really good prospect.
  12. People seem to forget that he was also fairly patient in April last year. The problem is that at no time has he shown that he can hit the ball or avoid striking. Right now he's walking a lot so people can look at his .300ish OBP for encouragement. Last year he hit 6 HR's in one month which basically saved that entire dreadful month OPS wise. At some point he needs to actually start making solid contact with the ball regularly. Right now I'm putting his realistic upside in the starting caliber player on a bad team. Carlos Gomez turned into a good player so anything is possible but Hicks has looked much worse than Gomez offensively.
  13. You just took a small sample size and made it smaller. It was pretty obvious to some going into the season though that Plouffe was the least of the Twins problems this year. And it would be nice if he took another step forward this season and become a Willingham/Cuddyer level player for the Twins.
  14. I continue to be unimpressed by Hicks and continue to lower his ceiling that others keep touting.
  15. Neither Meyer nor May are at a point where they need to be called up but they are ready to be called up. They are both 24 and have pitched in AA. Meyer doesn't have many innings at advanced levels but he wouldn't be damaged by some exposure at the big league level. He might not stick the first time around but he's the type of pitcher that could take off like some of the other young MLB pitchers have in recent years. Mays is getting close to as ready as he will ever be after 700 MiLB innings. His problem is that he isn't a very good prospect. Oops I forgot about that extra year since it was a completely pointless signing in the first place. He still completely stinks and I would have no problem with him moving to the bullpen until an injury happened.
  16. Nolasco and Hughes aren't going anywhere anytime soon. The Twins spent big money on them and they will be starting. Correia is basically doing what he did last year with a little higher ERA so he will stay. Gibson obviously isn't going anywhere. Pelfrey has been awful in every aspect and is only signed for this year. I could see him getting swapped for Deduno in the bullpen after another start or two if this continues. Both May and Meyer are ready to be called up but Meyer won't be called up because of super 2. May is as ready as he will ever be but I don't hold much optimism for him. I also don't think anything is hurt by either of them spending some time in AAA but if injuries happen there is no reason either of them couldn't be called up.
  17. This would have been the case 20 years ago but now money is a big decision maker. The Twins will keep Meyer down until July to avoid super 2 arb. Additionally the Twins have 4 high paid veteran pitchers and Gibson that will get an excessive number of chances. And Deduno will likely get the first shot at starting in the case of an injury or ineffectiveness.
  18. It's been mentioned before but I do not like Billy Hamilton at all. He can't hit. My team is rolling along behind a juggernaut of an offense. Hopefully the pitching holds it together this season though. Stanton might be breaking out into a top 5 player. Out of all the prospects I have traded I wish I had Bogaerts back addressing my SS position. I kind of forced that one for the Panda. I also wish I had some great prospects to trade this year as teams decide to rebuild when they don't need to.
  19. Great report on Meyer and bacon on a baseball uniform must be an awful experience for any player.
  20. I agree that in hindsight it was an awful decision but that's the key - hindsight. People look at Ortiz's MiLB stats and say that he could flat out hit but ignore Lecroy's MiLB stats that said he could flat out hit and then ignore that he basically replaced Ortiz's Twins production when Ortiz was cut. The Twins clearly made the wrong choice but there wasn't room on the roster for two tubby DH's.
  21. I also can't think of a HS age draft pick or int'l prospect that made a good case to be promoted. Moses, Plouffe, Parmelee, Hicks, Sanchez, Morales, Benson, etc... To get a promotion the prospect needs to perform and for the most part Twins prospects didn't do much for almost a decade. The only one that I can remotely think of is Revere but I think he got hurt in the 2nd half of his Beloit season.
  22. I know that almost everyone is fixated on the pitching in this draft but Alex Jackson is sounding like a beast.
  23. Extraordinarily awesome. You can kiss your money goodbye but that doesn't make the action any less awesome. And the money is the least important thing if you do hit on the longshot odds.
  24. Billy Beane has been doing this for years with AAAA positionless sluggers. He hit paydirt with Jack Cust but mostly he just clogged his roster with guys that couldn't field and didn't hit much either. Collabello
  25. The biggest reason for the myth is that most of the Twins early round prospects performed poorly or met expectations. There just aren't many cases of a prospect making a case of 'you need to promote me'. Arcia is an example of a prospect who did this and he flew through the system.
