  1. Law touches on an important and unfortunate fact about drafted RP'ers. They look like high floor guys that can make it to the majors quickly but they have an awful success rate. I still remember the year that 4 or so of them were drafted in the first rd. Perry, Schlereth, Fields and Gutierrez. None of them have had much success in the majors. And this is a story that typical repeats itself year after year. Some guys like Storen are successful but they are in the minority of a so-called high floor group. Sounds good in theory and I agreed initially in 2012. And then I watched a few videos of the drafted RP'ers. There was a reason that a couple of them were RP'ers. I have no idea how they survived pitching the limited number of innings in the bullpen in college. Just awful mechanics. I would not call myself an expert but it looked painful just to throw the baseball for them.
  2. A little early to say that but I wasn't impressed (in one start). but in the 2nd rd do you take someone that has okay velocity and a good secondary pitch (or two) or a guy with good velocity and needs work on his secondary pitches. At least Eades has a strong arm.
  3. I might have seen the same game. He threw easy but was only hitting 88-89 (once at 93mph). It has been noted that the scoreboard gun is slow but Eades was sitting 91-93 in the same game. I was pretty bullish on him and it's possible that he just needs to press reset this year. Velocity could be down for a number of reasons although I'm always a little skeptical of rk league fastball increases like stated in the OP. Sometimes I think these are 'I saw one pitch in the mid 90's' instead of 'consistently hitting mid 90's'.
  4. I saw his 5/29 start and I cannot remember one time that he fooled a batter with a changeup or breaking ball. He has a pretty good fastball (91-93 on the scoreboard) but that was it. He should be doing better in the low minors since the fastball should be enough there but I'm not sure if he will be successful in the upper minors and above without better secondary pitches.
  5. None of this means his command is good. Let's call it effectively wild.
  6. Delmon Young had tons of raw ability as does Arcia and he provides an excellent example of what COULD happen if Arcia continues to swing at everything. It's hard to be a successful MLB player when you have a 6:1 K:BB ratio (MLB career). I'm extremely bullish on Arcia because of natural raw ability but hitters like Arcia also carry downside and it's silly to simply look at a few HR's and say that the downside doesn't exist.
  7. They have only made two picks...
  8. Here is the Twins next pick - raw HS lefty - http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/highschools/2014-mlb-draft-scouts-size-up-6-foot-5-battlefield-left-hander-nick-wells/2014/06/04/d562af1e-eb3d-11e3-93d2-edd4be1f5d9e_story.html If he's gone then perhaps they go in a different direction taking a solid hitting college OF'er. http://m.mlb.com/tex/video/v33211325/draft-report-nick-torres-college-outfielder They like their Nicks.
  9. K's and BB's don't always tell you a lot about a player's command. It's easily possible that college hitters would swing at pitches on and off the plate because he has a 100/90mph fastball/slider. The good thing is that MLB hitters MIGHT also swing at everything he throws.
  10. I would trade him for Ervin Santana since you asked.
  11. Kanzler is a guy that you like to watch play baseball. 100% effort all the time.
  12. Goodrum was a really raw athlete that still needed to learn how to play baseball. Even when he was drafted they mentioned that he might move to CF if he didn't figure out defense. He's done alright but that's not Gordon at all.
  13. Perhaps but 91-93 sounds about right for Eades. He wasn't throwing that fast I don't think.
  14. They just can't say no to RP'ers. I won't get too worked up about this but if they draft one more (1st 5 rds) this place will explode.
  15. The DBacks own the draft. Shipley was a great pick last year and Touki is a great one this year.
  16. Or he never really had more velocity. He hit 93 once (I missed half of the pitch speeds). Other than that one pitch everything was 87-89. He throws real easy and he is a really lean kid so it's not time to give up on him but he isn't very interesting until you see something from him. I agree with Shane. Eades isn't a very good prospect. He had a solid fastball (91-93mph) that overpowered the low A hitters but I can't think of one changeup or breaking ball that made a hitter look foolish. Not one in 5-6 innings and these are hitters that aren't prepared for good off speed stuff.
  17. no power and a poor hit tool. He isn't going to hit enough at any level. He would be more comparable to Dee Gordon although not even that good.
  18. Vielma is not comparable at all to Nick Gordon.
  19. He wasn't competing with Hanley for the SS job. Hanley was set as the starter there. He was competing for a job at 2B and the Dodgers weren't going to move Hanley around all season if Gordon didn't win the job. but I don't think Dee Gordon will hit much. I think Nick Gordon will hit plenty.
  20. The Twins should do whatever it takes to stay affiliated with Hartford. It's not easy to find top rate facilities and I'm not sure I would like to see the Twins move to the Texas League or the Southern League.
  21. This is unlikely given the setup of the draft. For example the Cubs have already saved big money and they make their 2nd pick before the Twins and will certainly take somebody that dropped.
  22. Buxton Sano Meyer Stewart Gordon
  23. I would have preferred Jackson but I am not disappointed with Gordon. This is a very good pick imo.
  24. Arcia is all about raw ability right now. He'll survive on that alone but he must mature as a hitter over the next couple of seasons to become a real middle of the order threat. I see a lot of similarities to Delmon Young. He also had tons of raw ability. He just never matured as a hitter.
  25. Not really. He could slid if he got past the White Sox. Cubs are talking about saving some money and I'm not sure the Twins would have sacrificed extra money/picks for an overslot deal. I think the Twins will have their choice of Gordon and Jackson. And they will take Gordon. I would take Jackson.
