  1. I will not be happy if Gatewood is the pick at #5 even if it's an underslot deal. His hit tool is frightening. He has awesome power but there's a high likelihood that he becomes a complete bust.
  2. I completely understand the card collecting phenomenon. It's almost like an addiction and should be treated the same imo. There is no logical reason to do it because you are going to lose money even if you worked your butt off selling them (which nobody wants to do). It's almost like thinking you are going to win at the casino. I gave away 10-20,000 baseball/football/basketball cards 5 years ago. I had picked out anything interesting but almost everyone of the cards has no value other than sticking in bicycle spokes. I don't think the strike had anything to do with the decline of the baseball market. Until the late 80's there was a finite amount of cards available but after that there were dozens of different brands and mass printing of those brands. I think it would be great if people started collecting cards for the right reasons. For example buying a team set every year of your favorite team(s). Or maybe starting a collection of favorite players. This would be very cool.
  3. He (and Florimon) got off to a hot start last year and both cooled off considerably. They project him to finish with a .692 OPS because that includes his really lucky start to the season. From here to the end they project a .252/.290/.351/.642 line. He's a stop gap until something better comes along and ideally a utility player in the long term. I laugh every time I read about Escobar having upside.
  4. The argument to take Gordon should not be because the Twins need a SS but rather that he is in a virtual tie for BPA. Unfortunately there is a big drop after the top 3 pitchers. I think we are talking about a player with an All-star ceiling.
  5. Not sure if you have noticed but Polanco is back at SS. Him moving off of SS had to do with two things: A 2nd SS with a better arm on the same team and Polanco having an average arm. He's back at SS now because his bat is much better than Goodrum's currently and he has a much better chance at making the MLB. Gordon has a great arm. He is incredibly athletic and will be even if gains 20 lbs. He also gets good marks on his current defense. He's about as close of a lock to stay at SS as any SS that is getting drafted. As far as I can tell the only SS that you would ever be in favor of the Twins drafting is a 25+ HR hitter that is almost a guarantee to move off of the position.
  6. How on Earth is this comparable to the Harris or Lamb deals? How can you not like the Span deal? That extra year on the contract and the cost certainty played a big factor in getting a top pitching prospect in the trade. The Blackburn contract was a little silly from the get go. He wasn't going to get any better than his two best seasons. Dozier is looking like an occasional all-star at the very least. The closer a player gets to FA and the more that player wants for buying out FA years.
  7. I will worry about the Twins having too many good DH's when the Twins actually have too many good HITTERS. Not everyone of those hitters will work out and I'm not convinced that most of them can't play somewhere in the field.
  8. He will fill out a little but I don't think anyone expects him to be (close to) 200 lbs. He should easily be mobile enough to play SS. He should easily have enough arm. I guess there is a chance that he could freak out like Casilla anytime he has to make a routine play but he's a near lock to stay at SS.
  9. My opinion is that you are misusing stats to show success. Almost all of your cases against Anderson don't actually show much sustained success after leaving the Twins.
  10. I need to be reassured that Jackson is a legitimate bat only prospect that might stick (very little additional draft value) at C or 3B. Gordon is significantly more raw as a hitter but Jackson needs to show that his bat is fairly polished and the only question is whether or not he hits his upside (.850-.900 OPS). I'm not convinced that Jackson can become a regular all-star because the competition level is too high. If Gordon hits then he could be a perennial all-star. Holmes is the guy that most intrigues me right now outside of the top 3 and the 2 HS hitters. I'm not completely sure what to think of him yet.
  11. The reason that he will be there is that there are 3 guys in front of him that have ace pitcher upside. He also has higher risk which is why I'm still leary of him but when the alternatives are #3 pitchers (Aaron Nola gets a Mike Leake comp - good ERA and 6K/9) then he's in consideration. I also have no idea what you have been reading but there are no doubts that he can stick at SS. A lot of the guys you have listed had doubts in the draft.
  12. That list is hilarious. You have basically made an argument that very few pitchers succeed after leaving the Twins. In some cases you have cherry picked numbers and shown success in small sample sizes. Ayala - pitched himself out of the majors after leaving the Twins. Came back a few years later and was good in mopup time Eyre - is this a joke? Livan Cressend (58IP with CLE) Fultz - are you implying that the Twins should have stuck with a 31 yr old pitcher with no MLB success? Humber - less than 200 effective IP before being one of the starters in baseball Lincoln - 112IP before turning into a pumpkin Mijares - 38 effective innings with KC Redman - K rate plummeted and had one good season with FLA before sucking Romero - you left out his Angels stint where he was so ineffective that he was dumped Thomas - never was effective Beimel - nice career. I'm not going to fault anyone for cutting an 88mph LOOGY after 1.2IP Breslow - was a strange cut but I'm not sure that was Anderson's fault. He was effective here. Hawkins - cherry picked stat since he was basically the same after he left. Garza - 130 innings at the beginning of his career. Most people would expect him to get better Dickey - Yes, he everybody knew that a 35ish yr old knuckleballer was going to turn into Cy Young Lohse - He didn't become a good pitcher until the 6th season after leaving MN Balfour - clearly Anderson's fault that he was always injured as a Twin. Took him 5 years to become good. Crain - was pretty good as a Twins aside from an injured season and a season where the wheels fell off.
  13. I'm thoroughly sick of Manziel. He might work out as a QB but I think I would love to hate him as a Viking.
  14. This is painting with a broad brush stroke. Just because nobody is projecting Gordon to hit 25+ HR's doesn't mean that he isn't going to hit. I still need to be reassured that Gordon can be a .290/.350/.440/.790 hitter with plus defense at SS. That is a likely every year all-star if it happens. I think that is a high enough ceiling but I'm still concerned that the hit tool is raw. There's also a good chance that the Twins will be drafting in the top ten again next year.
  15. People said that the Span extension was also unnecessary at the time for the same reasons. Having that extension in place was one reason that Span was able to be flipped for a top pitching prospect. I think locking in his arb years and one FA year are a very good idea. There's something to be said about taking care of your young players for improving clubhouse morale. It's really not that much money and it could end up saving the Twins some (a lot of money) in the long run.
  16. .322/.379/.432 His numbers are that good so far this season. Obviously that will decline but he has cut his K rate in half this year. The big question will be if can continue to hit and continue hitting when he gets promoted. It's always good to have depth even if Dozier/Rosario are ahead of him.
  17. Jewscott is the Godfather lambo is the Kung Fu Master
  18. I think you are making a massive leap that he won't hit much just because his two weakest tools are hit tools. And the Twins don't have anyone that fits the same profile in the majors or minors. Polanco is the closest and probably only guy that is remotely close and he's not that close. Nobody should have any expectations that he's going to be a .290+ 20-30 HR type SS. Somebody in this thread threw out Tulo's name in support of taking him several pages back. The questions that need to be answered is just how good the hit tools are. I saw one site that had him with a 40/55 (current/future) hit tool and lower power tool. He's crushing HS pitching but that doesn't mean anything. Everybody that gets drafted in the 1st rd (and definitely top 10) should destroy HS pitching.
  19. I doubt that will be the case by the end of the season. Escobar doesn't have a chance to OPS .700 while Plouffe OPS's .700+ and is a disappointment. there's also a chance that things click for Plouffe and he becomes a less streaky solid hitter (.750+ OPS). I think the Twins should start Santana 4-5 games/wk and rotate Escobar in wherever there is an opening (even CF if he's not horrible).
  20. The good news is that his defense is good enough to make the majors (high floor). The lesser news is that his 2 weakest tools are hit and hit for power. the hopeful news is that he has actually made some mechanical improvements this season instead of just beating up on significantly less talented pitchers. Right now he's probably in my top 5.
  21. They are better than 66 wins which is needed for top 5. 75 wins gets them to the 11th/12th pick. that's in reach but I feel more comfortable predicting a few wins lower.
  22. There are 10-15 teams that have a 2nd pick before the Twins and are in a much better position to make that happen.
  23. they are better than last year but still not very good. I can't wait for next year's offseason debate when the Twins end up with the 11th/12th pick and would have to forfeit it to sign any notable FA.
  24. Yeah, it's not as if the Twins have a choice between Hoffman and significantly lesser player. TJ is usually successful but there are numerous examples of MLB players that just didn't come back as good as they were. He also wasn't a can't miss before he got injured.
  25. this thread is funny.
