  1. Suzuki - Deal. I don't think he will want an unreasonable amount. I like Pinto but the Twins have no depth at catcher and if Pinto struggles or gets injured the Twins won't be worrying if they catcher slinks back to a .260 hitter but rather they will be worrying if their catcher hits .160. Morales - No Deal. I'm bullish on Vargas and Morales/Mauer completely block him. I think he's a guy whose body is older than his actual age. That injury a couple of years ago really messed him up. Willy - Deal but not now. Trade him now but look to bring him back in the offseason. I don't see him getting a multi-year contract and despite the Twins depth of OF'ers in the minors they have almost nothing at OF in the majors. Another year of an experienced middle of the order bat would be nice. Dozier - whatever. My preference would be a deal giving the Twins cost certainty during arb years and reward Dozier with some guaranteed money (perhaps a little more front loaded than his projected arb money). BUT THEY SHOULDN'T TRADE HIM unless they are completely blown away.
  2. The problem is that there aren't a lot of singularly great 16 yr old prospects like Sano. Additionally even the best international FA's have a poor track record of success. Aside from MCab 15 years ago the top 20 int'l FA's have done very little in the majors and aren't very good prospects. http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/prospects/international-affairs/2011/2611342.html A lot of that list is still in the minors but Thorpe and Polanco would easily be considered better prospects than all but Gary Sanchez (Heredia vs thorpe could be argued). Most of that list would rate below Felix Jorge. Those are 3 examples of prospects that the Twins acquired in their spread the chips around quantity over quality approach. They were all acquired for 250K-1M.
  3. Swarzak didn't have trade value over the offseason for the same reason that Duensing doesn't have trade value now. RP's with below avg K rates are not valuable trade chips. The best you can hope for is an A ball player that profiles as a utility player or RP'er.
  4. This thread wasn't really about pushback to keep Anderson as pitching coach. It was more about applying blame and credit equally. If you are going to blame Anderson for failing to make mediocre pitchers into a solid rotation/bullpen then you should also give credit when a pitcher shows an improvement. If you don't think Anderson (and pitching coaches) has that much of an influence on pitchers that improve then the same is true for pitchers that struggle. Thrylos's list is an awful use of statistics. At least half of the pitchers on there didn't make a meaningful contribution to their next team. Eyre... Seriously??? Some took half a decade before becoming a valuable member of another team. Balfour for example. There are probably 5 at most pitchers that showed significant and unexpected improvement after leaving the Twins.
  5. It took Gomez 5 years to post a .700+ OPS. And he had a better offensive starting point that Hicks. The lesson that should have been learned was that Hicks looked really raw and he should have stayed in AAA last year and this year.
  6. Except he isn't the same pitcher. He ditched his slider (according to fangraphs and Pitch F/X) and is throwing a cutter (a lot). These are substantial differences in how a pitcher is approaching the game and it probably wasn't Hughes doing it.
  7. I think the twins are hoping that Eddie Rosario can be the CF option instead of a Jon Jay type. I would be very surprised if he doesn't get 2 months in CF this year.
  8. Except it doesn't. OPS, wRC and wOBA are much better. http://projectprospect.com/article/2009/07/09/barrel-awareness-correlating-team-hitting-stats-with-runs But more importantly the thing that matters is what a player will do for the rest of the season. Hicks simply isn't hitting the ball at all. His hits are not hard liners and the only thing making his offense look halfway respectable is all of the BB's. So going forward does he continue to struggle to hit the ball? Does he continue to rack up the walks? My guess is the team isn't optimistic on either of those.
  9. For whatever reason his Toronto (AAA) stats show up on the Rochester statsheet. I thought he was gone also but wasn't keeping that close of watch on the minors this year. But that just reinforces my point further. The Twins have almost nobody left to call up if they jettison Parmelee. Romero would be a nice story sometime. He is getting close to 10 years in the Twins system.
  10. My interest in Hicks has increased since he has given up SH. Clearly he needs time in AAA to work on this but he has tools at least. I wish people would stop using 25 PA sample sizes as evidence that Hicks is doing better since time X. He's had like 5 hits in that time. All he needs is a couple bloopers and he looks 'average' over 25 PA's. I was at the Texas game (possibly his first day giving up SH) and he had a couple of hits but he also made a couple boneheaded plays also. I can't remember what but stuff like getting picked off or doubled off. I wouldn't be surprised if part of the Twins angst is that he's not only playing poorly but he is also making the bad rookie mistakes. Those might be tolerated if you are playing well (like the suzuki example) but perhaps unfairly they will get blown up if you are doing terrible.
  11. Parmelee's future with the Twins is being able to take advantage of an AB here and a game there to show that he has some talent. He will certainly be glued to the bench for awhile (and deserves to be) but Willy, Mauer and Morales (maybe Arcia) will need days off. Right now the bench consists of Nunez, a backup C, and likely Fuld. that shouldn't be mission impossible to work his way to the top of that heap. He has dug himself a pretty big hole though. Larkin/Bush is an optimistic future upside at this point. He's a lefty so he could be fairly valuable if he could hit decently in a limited role. I'm guessing that he's DFA'd by the end of the month though. The Twins have literally no hitters left on the 40 man roster to call up after Pinto. Herrmann, Fryer, Colabello and Vargas. Kepler and Polanco have no shot at being called up. Mastro or Rosario (DOrtiz possibly) will likely see time but need to be added to the 40 man (not mission impossible).
  12. Why are we excited about a 31 yr old RP'ing prospect? It's too early to convert Meyer to a RP'er. If you do it now then he won't be able to handle a full season's innings next year. I'm not sure the Twins can give KC away despite his one solid start.
  13. I think I predicted that KC would pitch a gem in late April when there was a similar thread calling for his head. He did and we were blessed:cry: with another month. The thing is that he isn't truly bad (SSS so far). The problem is that he isn't really good either. It is time to give May a shot though.
  14. No, you don't mess with the players that are doing well. Dozier and Willy stay where they are at. Morales stays behind Willy. The 'bad' version of Mauer still has a .336 OBP. He will come around.
  15. There isn't a huge difference in value between CF and 2B. Especially when most analysis said that Rosario played a tolerable 2B. VARGAS!
  16. and Correia tosses a gem. Welcome to one more month of KC.
  17. There is a singular reason that he is playing CF. Aaron Hicks and the disaster that CF has been the last two seasons. He was projected as a guy that could stick in CF but would be a better corner OF'er. He was not considered a long term answer in CF due to Buxton, Hicks and Revere already being in the system and 2B was a big position of need. Ironically CF is the current position of need so he's there and I wouldn't be surprised if he gets a shot in a month or two.
  18. Burdi is not several years away. We should see him by next year at the latest. And this year is possible.
  19. RP'ers only throw 15-20 pitches in a game. It's going to be difficult to develop a 3rd pitch and use it enough that it is remotely effective. Using a single time that a college hitter squared up and hit a high 90's heater doesn't mean anything. Nobody should expect anyone to never give up A hit. Statistically speaking college hitters weren't squaring up anything against Burdi this season. He gave up 15 total hits in 32 IP. The ONE hit you saw was an aberration and not worth slowing down Burdi's rise to the majors.
  20. You can only remove one of these guys from the rotation. There's no guarantee that Johnson or May are actually better and if they need to be sent down the team is setup to cycle through a bunch of mediocre AAAA starters. Deduno/Correia have not been great but there are worse options. Correia is actually the same pitcher as last year he is just having trouble stranding runners this year. Obviously Meyer is the guy everyone wants up and I want him up also but all indications are that he won't be in the starting rotation at the end of the season.
  21. I want to read more about Romero. He has flown under my radar so far.
  22. I don't expect the team to spend all of the money it could next season so a 1.5 yr commitment does not concern me at all. tbh it's almost perfect. If it works out they have him locked up through 2017.
  23. His ERA's the last 4 years 2.97 4.16 3.78 3.99 His velocity is actually up this year (mostly in the bullpen). He's K'ing more batters. He's 26. The Twins should be getting this guy regardless of his bad 2 month start. May probably isn't better than him and Meyer will create space in the rotation when he's ready.
  24. Basically yes. If he signed then he couldn't play in the CWS and players aren't giving that up.
