  1. Rookie league numbers only mean something if you are failing. It has nothing to do with age since most of the players are simply not talented. There is almost no way that he skips Elizabethon. He seems very raw and very young while being good but not exceptional in the GCL. Nice lottery ticket to have though.
  2. I think it's clear that Escobar is the guy next year but I would be surprised if he OPS'd over .650 and had an OBP over .300 next season. He's a stop gap guy that is not awful.
  3. I'm just hoping that TR realizes that he is going to have a lot of players making the MLB min all over the roster and comes up with a plan to spend wisely. With so few actual positional needs (Vargas and Arcia should be given every chance to play for example) I hope that he concentrates that money into 1-2 positions. I'm not in the spend for the sake of spending nor do I think all of that money should be committed next offseason but if there is a good match then I hope the Twins become even more aggressive in FA.
  4. SS is not the least of the Twins problems. It's not if Escobar and Santana regress but by how much. I think Escobar shows that he's a utility player next year. Santana might be playing CF and will likely have spent 2 years off of SS and it might not be an easy transition back. the problem with signing a FA SS or making a trade is that these moves usually require overpaying by a substantial amount. I wouldn't be surprised if Cabrera got 50M this offseason. He's a decent pickup for a contender that is going for it but he's not good defensively, he's not great offensively and he will be 30 soon. Arcia and Vargas should be given every opportunity at DH and OF next year. I wouldn't necessarily call it a position of weakness although the production has been weak this year. I think the Twins should spend some decent money on a 2-3 year OF option (like Markakis).
  5. I hope that neither Garver or Turner are starting for the Twins. Pinto is in a tough spot. I think he ends up with a Ryan Doumit career. Not quite good enough at hitting to be an everyday player not at catcher and not quite good enough at catching to be an every day catcher.
  6. I don't think Asdrubal will be a buy low this year. I think he will get a nice contract based on reputation. Peralta is a comparable player and he got 56M after getting busted for steroids. I have no idea what to think of getting Hanley. It won't be cheap at all. He is injured all the time, has been inconsistent and is on the wrong side of 30. OTOH he's one of the few potentially elite bats available and dropping an elite bat into the middle of all of the high upside prospects takes the pressure off and could give the Twins a really strong lineup. I would not be against moving Hanley to 3B and Sano to RF. It's possible that hanley could stay sort of healthy at 3B and just focus on being a slugger. Getting Hanley has a 0% chance of happening though. Signing FA's could happen (despite other threads stating otherwise) but Hanley is everything (risk and high commitment ($$$)) that the Twins avoid.
  7. They have patched the team together with mediocre vets while waiting for the farm system to produce. You can't just press a magic button and have AA/AAA loaded with ready to be called up prospects. That is how most teams rebuild. it will be interesting to see how many mediocre vets are brought in this year. There really isn't a lot of room for them since quite a few prospects are in the majors or are on the verge. I'm hoping for 2 quality FA signings (OF and SP) and not much else. Pablo is an unrealistic target imo. He's going to get paid pretty well on name value alone. Plouffe is the stop gap 3Bman and really not that bad. No reason to pay big bucks on another stop gap and then force Mauer to the OF.
  8. I have found it surprisingly difficult to do anything in the loser's bracket. You have one more rd of playoffs and so far the top 2 scores this week are in the loser's bracket instead of the championship bracket. Good luck.
  9. I would be very interested in acquiring a good starter this offseason. You are right that there are very few holes to fill. C/1B/2B/3B/DH are locked up. No team should pay for RP'ers. Good SS's are almost never available. That leaves picking up an OF bat and SP'ing. Despite having options the starting pitching is full of question marks. Hughes - good gibson - not great but solid Nolasco - red flags on this guy until he is healthy and effective for the next 12 months. I have my doubts. Milone - is next year's version of Worley/Diamond/Blackburn/Silva/KC/Pavano. If things are good then he's alright and if he's just a little off then it's a disaster. May - a good prospect but not a great one Meyer - a great prospect with injury/durability red flags I almost certainly know that the Twins won't be shopping in the Lester/Scherzer market but Iwakuma (?), Shields and ESantana are out there. The Twins have 60M committed (plus Plouffe in arb) and almost no holes to fill. I would go after a potential #1/2 because they have options for #3/4/5 starters and they don't have anywhere else to spend the money.
  10. I'm not sure I would use the Marlins as an example of success since they blew out their Cy Young's arm in just over 1 season. He had thrown 51 innings by May 9th this year. That's what happens when young players are in the majors instead of at AAA. In AAA this year the Twins were able to pull Meyer early instead of going for the win. Meyer's arm is always going to be an injury concern but he appears to (still) be healthy.
  11. 26 plate appearances don't negate the fact that he has a .517 OPS this season and .613 OPS for his career. He's a backup that you pretty much hope you don't have to play aside from pinch running or as a defensive replacement.
  12. No, Meyer's 2015 season is more comparable to Gibson's 2013 season where everyone wanted him to open the season in the rotation and he didn't get called up until the middle of the season. Gibson already had two months of service time (in 2014) so it would have been more difficult to play the service time game with him. I don't care if Nolasco and the Twins say that he is healthy. The rest and rehab route is rarely effective even if a pitcher comes back for a short time. I can think of one pitcher (Ervin Santana) that avoided TJ after going the rest and rehab route. Brett Anderson delayed for 1+ years but ultimately he had TJ. Regardless pitching is thin next season although it's better than recent seasons.
  13. Jordan Schafer is not good at baseball. He isn't a good stop gap if you mean that he should start until Bux or Hicks come up or play 2-3 times/wk. His value is backup CF'er, pinch runner and defensive replacement. And you hope that he doesn't start many games at all. Guys like this are freely available every offseason.
  14. This is what we have seen before but a not at all what you are talking about. Meyer will be a victim of the service time nonsense and won't be an option for opening day. If anything the Twins are setting up to have a rotation full of holes again instead of too much pitching. that leaves the Twins with Nolasco Hughes Gibson Pelfrey May Milone Pelfrey stinks but he will get a shot. According to thebaseballcube May went on the 40 man right before the Revere trade and was optioned in 2013 and 2014. Milone went on the 40 man at the end of 2011 but was never optioned to the minors (2011/2012) and didn't use an option year. He was optioned in 2013 (for 2 weeks) and in 2014. He still has an option. So the Twins have 6 bodies for the opening day rotation. 1 of them will be <1 year into the UCL rehab route (ticking time bomb). 1 of them stinks and 2 of them have options (not including Gibson). Meyer is available in June and will almost certainly be needed by then. Imo this is not a problem and imo pitching depth is still a little shaky. The Twins certainly better not avoid FA starters this offseason because of this non-existent problem that they have.
  15. Let's consider the irony. Almost the entire board complains that the Twins are playing veterans during a rebuild and expects every 30+ player to be traded but some also complain that the Twins aren't making big splashes into FA every season. The fact is that the Twins have only had a few seasons to be able to spend money in FA since Target Field opened. For the most part they have sucked during that time and they still aren't the Yankees or Red Sox. They won't be able to spend their way out of the cellar. Making any conclusions about a team's willingness to spend in FA based on a handful of rebuilding seasons will not give you an accurate conclusion. FWIW - The 2012 offseason was even worse than the 2013 offseason for SP'ing. There was buehrle and C.J. Wilson (15M/yr) and Edwin Jackson. I'm certainly not going to criticize anyone for not spending silly money on average at best (and potentially much worse) starting pitching. You could criticize him for not making brilliant moves like trading a setup guy for a cheap average starter (Travis Wood), for picking up a young failed prospect (Arrieta) that has turned into a stud and a new failed prospect (turner). But he actually has been doing this with his best trade chips by adding May and Meyer while buying low (not bargain bin) on Hughes. the Twins still end up with too many flyers on pitchers without stuff but there has been an organization shift and stuff is actually considered in the draft, trades and FA now. It's progress.
  16. Unrealistic expectations. Bargain bin doesn't equal the 20th highest FA contract in an offseason. It's not a massive splurge but it is not like shopping at Goodwill.
  17. Parmelee had a nice hot streak and other than that he has been terrible. His numbers just continue to drop. At least he's going to get a lot of AB's during the next month and a half to make this obvious.
  18. Adam is nothing like the soft tossing Gilmartin. He's more like Pressly (Rule 5), Welker, Pryor, Hoey, etc... Interesting bullpen arm that throws hard but hasn't gotten good results yet.
  19. Just say no to Pinto in the OF. He's a 20 runner on a 20-80 scale.
  20. Harper is having a poor season this year. Something is clearly off but let's not forget that he's still just 21. A lot of top prospects are still in AA ball at that age. For example Buxton is one year younger than him and just made it to AA. Taveras is a couple of months older. Baez a month younger. The point is that I wouldn't discount 30-40 HR seasons just because he is struggling at age 21 during an injury plagued year. Perhaps I should be trading for him this offseason in fantasy.
  21. And they added Milone to the 40 man so due to trades it should be 1 open spot. There are guys that can be DFA'd though.
  22. I don't have any problems with the Willy trade but people need to stop acting like there are decent prospects to play out there. Maybe Hicks is up and plays every day but I'm not convinced that is the best for him. I like the idea of Buxton coming up for September but I don't see it happening with the importance of service time now. And Arcia is currently injured. Schafer or Nunez with Parmelee is going to be getting starts out there. Awesome.
  23. Congrats on winning your division and facing me in the 1st rd. Lucky for you Stanton felt called out about my comments regarding the team limping into the playoffs.
  24. I thought we had to temper our enthusiasm.
