The Revere pick partly had to do with signability but it also had to with the Twins really liking him and the fact that their 2nd pick was #92 (Danny Rams). He might have been available but that was a risk.
The overslot picks had a higher chance of success than slot picks and it only cost money. For years all of the small market teams were cheap. Teams like the Pirates and Royals frequently went underslot on their top picks but suddenly something clicked for some of the small market teams and they started pumping big money into the draft and built up strong farm systems. The Twins were one of the last teams to realize this in the draft and the international market.
Perhaps this needs highlighting for those that think Gordon's hit tool is subpar. He's not going to be tulo with the bat but he also isn't going to Elvis Andrus, Everth Cabrera or Alcides Escobar. And the defensive reports continue to get better.
I only found 5 Twins in the 20/20 club (could have missed one). Hunter is the only guy (2x) that you didn't mention and he did it twice. Versailles was the closest miss being one HR short. Dozier is certainly going to fall off of his 30/30 pace. Those HR's are going to become doubles but the good news is that the rest of his stats say that he will be a good player. It will be interesting to see if Dozier is destined for a low BAPIP (like Hardy) or if he has actually been unlucky. If he has a normal BAPIP he picks up about 30+ pts of BA but he has a pretty low track record of low BAPIPs.
Wouldn't it have been easier to write an article about not building a team with bad players? Twice in the last 3 year the Twins have had the 25th ranked offense. Did the author think the Twins would have been better if they had some defensive wiz's in the corners?
Even if Pinto is playing 2/3 of the time then the backup is still playing 50-60 games. When you put in a guy like Fryer for those 50+ games then you make the team worse. And the Twins become even worse if ONE injury occurs at an injury prone position and Fryer/mystery man are catching all of the games. Having depth at catcher is essential.
You keep him at catcher this summer and next year. By then you should have enough info on him about whether or not he will be a catcher and how much slower he would have to go. The other alternative is the old move Mauer to 3B angle for a catcher. It's also been mentioned for Jackson and it would retain defensive value and probably move him along faster. I also have little confidence that Sano will remain at 3B for a long time.
Because w/o Suzuki the Twins have Pinto and nothing at C for the near future. I cannot understand why people want to make the Twins worse unless there is a really good prospect involved. Perhaps people think we are talking about a big extension. Suzuki could be extended relatively cheaply (<2/10 for sure). He might even get one guaranteed year and an option year.
The Twins have Nunez and Santana (and one of kubel/Cola) on the bench giving them enough flexibility. What the Twins need is a pinch hitter since it's almost a guarantee that the pitcher will be PH for 1-2 times/game. I can almost guarantee that we will see Herrmann/Nunez getting some PH's during those 2 series.
Big week for me going 4-0 (unless MCab hits a GS) and knocking off a couple of the 2nd tier contenders. TRad is just steamrolling the league with his 5 #1/2 pitchers. My roster of #3/4's is completely overmatched on paper.
His defense isn't that good (not a plus skill) since that article said the same things that were said about him while he was a Twin. Poor routes, good speed to make highlight catches and a noodle arm.
I don't have a problem with the trade despite the pumpkin that Worley turned into but I think it's a bit early to call May a middle of the rotation starter.
How exactly is Vargas young (almost 24)? Why is it a bad thing to call someone up for a week or two to sit on the bench? This isn't disrupting his development.
There is no rational justification to getting rid of Suzuki right now unless the Twins can land a good prospect (top 150ish). He started out his career as a very good catcher and if he has merely returned to anything close to 2010/2011 levels then he is a great option as a part time catcher. At a time when the Twins have almost no catching depth at the MLB level or in the upper minors. Getting rid of him opens the door to some truly dreadful options behind the plate with just one injury to Pinto. And that's if you want Pinto behind the plate every day.
I disagree with this 'they would benefit with more AAA time' thought. They each have 3-4 full seasons of minor league ball and there are things to learn at the MLB level even if they don't play every day.
Let's not jump the gun on May yet. He has K'd a lot of hitters but he has a 4.44 ERA as a Twin. Revere OTOH is exactly who we thought he was. A marginal CF'er that only does two things well (hit singles and steal bases). And right now he isn't even hitting singles.
It has to do with projection. Kevin Slowey had similar stats and destroyed the minors. many pitchers destroy the minors but lack the pitches to be good in the majors. Obviously Nola has better stuff than Slowey (a 2nd rd pick) and played against higher college competition but at the end of the day the most important thing for a draftee is projects in the majors.
Why are we talking about DFA'ing Willingham when the Twins have gotten no production out of their OF'ers? IF Parmelee keeps hitting then there is still room for Willingham. Colabello and Kubel are showing that they are expendable or bench guys. Arcia will spend some time in AAA but even when he comes back up there is room on the team for guys that can actually hit.
The trick is getting hitters to think it will be a strike and that might take time to master (in AAA) depending where he is at with the pitch. I honestly wouldn't have a problem if they called up Meyer tomorrow. He's a 24 yr old college starter with 2 successful seasons of pro experience and pitched in AA last year. I'm also not going to be concerned if he spends 2 more months in the minors and gets called up in July.
John Manuel posted an interesting mock at BA today. (I don't think it's been mentioned yet). 1. Rodon 2. Jackson 3. Aiken 4. Freeland - mentions that the Cubs are looking for a college starter 5. Gordon - Kolek/Gordon mentioned 6. Nola 7. Kolek - specifically mentions the high number of hard throwing HS draftees needing TJ as one reason teams might avoid him. I like Gordon a fair amount but I would prefer Jackson or Kolek if they are available.
I think it's ironic that many people are concerned with how many DH types the Twins currently have that can actually play the field not horribly but wanted the Twins to keep two tubby guys that shouldn't even own baseball gloves on the same roster. That article might make it sound like it was Morban for Ortiz but rosters become a mess when there are two DH only guys on them.
We're going to have KC for at least two more months. He's going to throw 2 solid games and buy himself more time to rile up the TD board. I really don't have a problem with the Twins picking up 1 guy like KC or Pelfrey to fill out the rotation. The problem is that they have 2 of them. They also picked up KC immediately in FA 2 years ago and they signed Pelfrey when there were still very good options available in FA. I remember a thread where several people on here believed that the Twins couldn't pick up Ervin no matter how cheap he was because Pelfrey had the last spot. Ervin has been awesome. Pelfrey not so much.
They have 2 weeks exactly to get healthy because I want to see as many of them healthy as possible when I visit. Hopefully the rotation works out so I can see Kohl Stewart because that would be sweet.
