  1. FA is calculated a little differently in Japan. In America it is based on how much MLB service a player has but in Japan the time is counted starting at the draft date so players usually reach FA earlier (and younger). Another twist to Japanese baseball free agency rules is that players must decide whether or not to entire the domestic (Japanese) draft. If they do then they are locked in for 8 years. There was some speculation that Shonei Otani (sp?) (an elite talent) was going to bypass the Japanese draft and enter the international free agency market (intending to sign with an MLB team) but nothing ever happened. But they clearly need to make the choice before that draft because after that their rights are owned for 8 years. I'm not sure how Kershaw or Scherzer being available in a trade is relevant. The posting fee is a cash payment to release someone from a contract/league while a trade is an exchange of players. I highly doubt the MLB ever allows teams to post a player (basically sell off) prior to FA. I could see (and would like) a change in free agency eligibility eliminating the whole service time game. That would be awesome actually.
  2. For me the questions are more about the hit tool and showing enough power to rack up doubles and triples with 5-10 HR's. Basically I need to see more Jose Reyes potential than Billy Hamilton (speed and walks with questionable hit tool, defense and little power). Obviously he won't be Reyes but maybe Rollins/Furcal.
  3. I think this could be the standard reply to 80% of the proposed trades on here. I have never understand why people think they can add up a bunch of guys that a bad team doesn't want while including one decent prospect to get a better prospect.
  4. I think people need to consider that Doumit isn't a worthless player. The problem is that he didn't have a role on the Twins since they have several guys that shouldn't play in the field and they are rebuilding. Doumit is not worth 3.5 M to an NL team but he does fill the a role on an NL team better than an AL team. He's a pinch hitter from both sides of the plate. Doumit isn't a great option as a starting DH but the Braves weren't going to sign a guy that is capable of being a full time DH. It should have also been clear that the Twins weren't going to outright cut/DFA a player like Doumit. Gilmartin is nothing but AAA depth (not terrible) but not likely to contribute in the majors. I'm just impressed that the Twins didn't have to kick in any money in the deal. It actually isn't important but it does make Gilmartin mostly irrelevant.
  5. That might be the point.
  6. You misunderstand. It's not that they don't have any money to add a bat, it's that I think they are almost too focused on pitching. There's still a lot of time left this offseason but a lot of deals and trades have already happened.
  7. Doumit won't be flat out cut. The Twins won't cut a veteran like that. Perhaps at the end of spring training if he 'loses' a position battle but it's even more likely that Doumit is still on the roster for several months next summer.
  8. They wouldn't have that option. Their NPB team would hold their rights for X number of years and MLB would honor that.
  9. You have misread my post. Restricting the Asian players to the MLB draft or the very restricted int'l FA spending caps would kill the flow Asian players to the majors. And that's the only way the system wouldn't favor big market teams (a prior complaint in this thread) since these players are essentially FA's. This posting fee limit will do nothing to restrict the flow of Asian players to the majors. 20M is still a huge amount of money for these Japanese teams and their choices are limited to this year, next year or completely losing him (no posting fee) if they want to maximize their domestic revenues. It's actually rare that a team would post a player before the next to last season of there contract but Rakuten was planning on cashing in early in case of injury.
  10. I don't understand how you can think it's not worth attempting to upgrade one of the worst offenses in baseball. We aren't talking 5-6 year contracts here. For example Corey Hart signed a 1 yr contract with the Mariners in an absolutely awful park for RH'd power hitters. Additionally the Twins have so many marginal players starting currently that it wouldn't be difficult to shuffle a player around when an elite prospect comes up. I don't see any reason to not sign someone to a 2-3 year contract NOW because we need to see how Polanco handles SS this year. He's 2-3 yrs away and not an elite prospect. There are reasons for not signing Drew but this definitely isn't one of them.
  11. This system isn't broken. These players are basically FA's with an additional posting fee that must be paid. And large market teams always have the advantage when it comes to signing FA's. And there is no good argument why 25-30+ yr old professional Asian ballplayers should be restricted to signing with bad teams or small market teams. They certainly shouldn't be required to enter the draft or be subject to the international FA salary limits. Both of those solutions would kill the flow of the Asian players to the majors.
  12. Do you honestly think somebody needs to be an impact bat to make the Twins offense better? We are talking about a team that projects to start Florimon, Plouffe, Parmelee, Presley and two young, unproven hitters in Pinto and Arcia. I also find it strange that you make an argument that most of the MLB ready pitchers as trash (they aren't great) but think it would be difficult to upgrade the offense in FA or trades. The Twins offense is not full of MLB starting caliber players and I would project them as a bottom 5 offense in the majors. I also have no idea how you can spin signing Drew as a negative and then list a bunch of crappy prospects (Santana is a utility player, Michael absolutely sucks and Polanco is 2+ years away) as an argument against signing Drew. I don't have a problem with the pitching moves made although Pelfrey is lackluster but it isn't mission impossible to upgrade one of the majors worst offenses that is full of marginal MLB players.
  13. The only problem with the offseason is that the Twins have ignored adding anything to a pretty bad offense. Long term this could work out since the Twins best prospects are hitters but 2014 could be an awful year offensively.
  14. Perhaps they wait another year (he's a FA in 2 years) until they post him but 20M is huge for Japanese teams. For example Rakuten's entire payroll in 2009 (the latest year I can easily find) was only 20M. 20M certainly isn't a song for them.
  15. I would trade Burton (old and fairly priced), Thielbar (not very good) or Pressly (not very good) for a solid piece. Tonkin I keep (good potential) and Fien (very successful with numbers to back it up).
  16. Worley has had more success than Diamond. I think people forget that he has had only one bad season following minor surgery after throwing 260 good innings of baseball. This is not a cut that you make over 4 months before opening day especially when you have a roster with Colabello, Mastro, Fryer, Escobar, Albers, Johnson and a couple of other marginal options. Are you suggesting that Swarzak can only be a long man? If he's actually good then you can promote him to a more important role.
  17. The same used to be said about Ryan.
  18. Just because a roster decision regarding Duduno/Diamond/Worley needs to be made by opening day that doesn't mean that the decision should be made in December. In addition it's possible that a starting pitcher goes down with an injury in spring training opening a spot and it's also possible that one of the starting spot losers makes the team as a long reliever.
  19. Even more frustrating is when he gets upset when you evaluate a trade offer as such. He offered Dominguez/Pence for Stanton last week.
  20. I don't care who at this point but they need to bring in a veteran that can catch 60-100 games regardless of Pinto's possible injury. Suzuki and Buck are at the top of my list so hopefully one of them ends up here.
  21. If you want to get a big payday the following year then it might make sense to sign with a team that has fewer roadblocks to playing time. I'm guessing Kubel likes his chances against Parmelee, Colabello, Doumit, Presley, Mastro and basically any other option the Twins can throw out there in the DH/OF mix aside from Willy and Arcia (AAA?). It's too bad this wasn't one of the years where the Twins didn't have any decent DH option because this would be a great match. but even though it isn't a great match it's still a great pickup.
  22. Lackey got 5 years and a similar option might be the enticement to a team to sign Garza for five years since they know will get an extra year if he loses a season to TJ. It really isn't a bad option for Garza since he gets the guaranteed money.
  23. The problem with this deal isn't Pelfrey but rather timing. If the Twins make a deal for Pelfrey now then it eliminates them from signing/trading for a better pitcher that falls through the cracks this offseason. I can't believe he's not signing this offer. He doesn't seem like an attractive FA but perhaps he actually wants a 1 yr contract while TR wants to lock in 2 yrs at what he perceives as a discount.
  24. Instead of a traditional vesting option I would give him the same option that is in Lackey's contract. I definitely like Garza more than Pelfrey but at a certain point I start to prefer keeping those long term dollars available for another offseason. Signing Bailey next year isn't even possible if the Twins have locked up Garza, Nolasco and Hughes for 3, 4, and 5 years for example.
  25. Arroyo at 3/36 is just silly. I would much rather have Pelfrey at 2/12 (latest offer).
