  1. The only thing I care about at this point is that they spend the money on legitimately good players instead of spending silly money on players that are as good as Corriea. I don't even care what position the players play as long as they are legitimately good.
  2. You are greatly overvaluing a 2nd rd pick if you are going to eliminate some very good players from a very competitive FA market.
  3. Guys that can toss <4.00 ERA's are that good. You also greatly overestimate the Twins rotation both next year and down the road.
  4. It should have been painfully obvious that Liriano needed a change of scenery. He was quite talented but there was considerable friction between Liriano and the staff and I don't we would have seen that great season (2013) if he had stayed with the Twins. It would have just been another painful season of watching a talented pitcher underperform. This is the type of pitcher that the Twins should be looking for this offseason. Sometimes guys just need a change of scenery to get back on track.
  5. I think you are over relying on advanced stats. Nolasco has a 0.62 difference between his xFIP and his ERA over his career. I don't know why he underperforms xFIP but it's pretty clear that xFIP, FIP and fangraphs WAR are not the evaluation tools to use for Nolasco. I also like Jimenez regardless of the 2nd rd draft pick required.
  6. I'm not sure what past history you are looking at but this isn't really true. Teams that are horrifically awful (like the current Twins) see their attendance nosedive. The Twins fanbase have so far kept coming to the games but that has more to do with a decade of winning teams, a new stadium and the upcoming All-Star game. If the Twins continue to be horrifically awful for a couple more seasons then attendance will nosedive like the late 90's.
  7. I am deadset against Nolasco if the contract is for 5 years (or even 4). that's just silly money for someone that has had ERA's of 4.48+ for 4 out of the last 5 years. I would strongly prefer a contract extension to Correia and that shouldn't be viewed as an endorsement.
  8. A 3 yr deal for Arroyo? Really? The bullpen is incredibly cheap by almost every measure.
  9. The roster will be made up of all of these prospects that are coming up that won't even be in arb yet. The only way to come close to an easily justifiable 125M payroll is by signing FA's. They could sign a bunch of Arroyo's every year to spend that money or they could sign a couple of really good ones instead.
  10. The only problem with getting Garza is that he's probably getting Anibal money and then some. Anibal was younger and had slightly better numbers but Garza has been successful in Tampa. I'm okay with throwing a big pile of money at Garza, Tanaka or Ubaldo even though the Twins won't. And there is still plenty of money to sign another pitcher next season if there's one available.
  11. The optimist in me wants to believe that the Arroyo talk is about securing a solid pitcher while a bigger splash is made later in the offseason. The realist in me believes that this offseason will be about acquiring some veteran players that make the team less embarrassing but not actually good (or younger). I really don't have a problem with Arroyo but this is a lot like signing Correia last year. Rather uninspiring but it maintains the mountains of payroll flexibility for the next decade.
  12. Kepler's season wasn't even that bad considering how little experience he had before signing with the Twins. He was considered a longer project than most. The other really encouraging thing about his season is that his BB and K rates are really good while he showed some power. His statline looks bad due to a .254 BAPIP. Adjust that up to .300 and he would have had an awesome statline.
  13. You just listed 4 players that shouldn't be starting OF'ers. Willingham should start at DH while at best you could get a solid platoon out the other guys. That leaves you with both Hicks and Arcia starting and both of these players might be best off starting out in AAA.
  14. I disagree and think it's beneficial to the rebuilding. It's finalized and the Twins can start making other moves with Mauer set in one position instead of not being able to sign player X (like Abreu) to a longish contract because they have to keep the spot open for Mauer in 1 or 2 or 3 or X number of years. And this is exactly the reason that the Twins had zero interest in Abreu (imo). this move also makes it more likely that Mauer is still really valuable during the Twins resurgence.
  15. The thing is that the Twins arms stack up well against the Pirates arms. Heredia is a big name only. Kind of like Deolis Guerra when he was traded for. He's been pushed but he doesn't strike anyone out while walking everyone. It's not too early to judge McGuire. I didn't like him that much in the draft and I still don't. Meadows is a different story.
  16. I don't think people have much of a problem with that. The problem is that there are six marginal hitters in the lineup. In addition to that two of the three good hitters (dozier and Arcia) could slump. It could be the worst lineup in baseball.
  17. I think the last couple of seasons have made it brutally clear that you cannot have too many solid but unspectacular arms.
  18. Sign DeRosa.
  19. I'm not as high on Kingham, McGuire or Hansen as you are. And Glasnow is a complete boom/bust type. They might stick at #5 but I like the other 4 teams more.
  20. I don't have a problem with taking advantage of the RH/LH but this team needs some better hitters than Shane's projected lineup. That team is closer to 50 wins than 70 wins imo. For example it's inevitable that some of these guys will be starters next year but this simply cannot be the #4-9 hitters on opening day. Please let there be more talent on the roster than this next season.
  21. The basic blueprint Sign a good pitcher - Tanaka or Jimenez but I could settle for a Hughes type Send Doumit packing for anything (or basically nothing if necessary) - Joe says he wants to catch so Doumit is expendable with Pinto as a half time backup/starter Keep Willy until deadline as a middle of the order bat to take pressure off of Arcia and Sano. And he could have a nice season Trade Perkins IF there is a top prospect available for him. At a minimum top 50ish regardless of position. Sign a FA OF'er - this doesn't seem like a good choice but this is where the talent is this offseason. If you are going to spend money then go after somebody good. And even though the farm system is stacked with hitters the MLB team sucks at hitting and prospects bust all the time. Start Arcia and Hicks in AAA because they have some issues at the plate that need some work. Bring them up in June/July if they look good.
  22. During the middle of the season I thought the Twins were a definite #1 but them being in the 3-5 range has nothing to do with prospect disappointments but everything to do with just how ridiculous the Cubs and Astros systems are becoming. Bogaerts still qualifies for the Sox but Gerrit Cole doesn't so I don't think they are top 5 w/o him.
  23. The Twins won't be held back by lack of prospects. They will be held back by never having enough effective MLB'ers to add prospects to. Ubaldo only costs money and a what likely amounts to a marginal prospect. Adding an above average arm is exactly what this team needs (now and 3 years from now). I already showed draft results for the Twins (and the entire MLB) is really sketchy once you get close to the 2nd rd. And even if that pick turned out it will probably take 3-4 years to even make the majors. I think you are also prematurely jumping the gun by saying that someone won't be effective at age 32.
  24. This is a really simple calculated ranking that is only looking at 5 prospects (and graduated prospects) from each org and doesn't include recent draft picks or top rk ball talents. Additionally Buxton and Sano don't score in the top ten of assets since they were playing in leagues further away from the majors than other players even though they aren't that far away. It's difficult to even get upset considering how simple of a list it is. However it is amazing how strong some of these farm systems are. Top 3 isn't even guaranteed.
  25. It also doesn't work like your proposed change (or someone else's). It was mentioned that if things were pay as you go then costs would be driven down. That's true but the quality of care and amount of preventative care would drastically decline. Doctors and hospitals would start really cutting corners to attract patients since they are now price shopping for everything and people would just skip preventative care (huge long-term consequences). And when someone needed a big dollar operation due to injury or other non-lifestyle illness they simply wouldn't get treated due to not having insurance. Either they would die or they could end up disabled and unable to work. there are massive issues before and after the ACA but the previously proposed system (possibly by you) would be a horrendous step backwards. Do we actually know that E-room visits and regular doctor visits have the same fees? Taiwan (I have National Health Insurance here) had the same fees initially and that was a giant screw-up (obviously) but they raised the E-room fees and my friends had no problems getting admitted into the E-room almost immediately when I took her. basically it became a non-issue.
