  1. If you were going to do this then it would be completely different than 4 man rotations in the 60's and you wouldn't be counting on your starter to go 6 innings either. You count on your starters to get you through 5 innings and then depend on an 8 man bullpen (possibly 9 men) to finish games. The goal also isn't to keep the Hernandez and Martis types out of the rotation but simply to reduce the amount of innings that the starters throw. In 2013 the Twins starters were 1.75 runs (measure by ERA) worse than the relievers. A 4 man rotation would get to the more effective bullpen quicker since starters wouldn't work as deep into games. In theory it could work but in reality it is probably a disaster. I also wouldn't like this as a fan. I don't want to see the starter getting pulled in the 5th inning almost every game.
  2. there is going to be some silly money thrown around and a lot of wtf's are going to be mentioned Tanaka - 52M posting fee and a 6/70 deal Hughes - 4/44 Jimenez - 4/60 Haren - 2/27 Kazmir - 2/20 Garza - 5/90 E Santana - 4/68 Morneau - 2/13 choo - 5/90 Ellsbury - 6/120 Cano - 8/225 McCann - 4/60 Granderson - 5/75
  3. This is kind of my point. It took 6 years for Tampa to turn it around. If the Twins can get a very good starter for nothing more than money and a prospect that is unlikely to turn out then they are on the road to being a good team faster. And there is nothing about this that means they won't continue to build the farm system. Here's a thread where many people are prepared to trade someone as good as Dozier/Rosario plus another prospect for a pitcher similar to Jimenez. I would strongly prefer to give up a 2nd draft pick than an actual really good prospect.
  4. You can add Holmes to your list at #5. Sitting at 93 is more than adequate considering he has two other good pitches already. I agree though that the list was a little underwhelming but I like 4 pitchers in next year's draft at this point and could settle for Gatewood so I think the Twins will land someone I like.
  5. It is always nice when someone more knowledgeable brings up the concerns that I have been bringing up. It will be interesting to see how this draft shapes up next summer. The Twins should end up with a potential star at #5 but it might not be a pitcher. I can live with that if the Twins end up with a potential star. That's really the important part for me.
  6. They don't let us play like that anymore. That was an epic thread.
  7. People make way too big of a deal out 2nd rd picks. Yes, it's nice to get another pick but I would trade an overwhelming majority of the picks (#20-75) the Twins have made in the last 7 years for a 3-4 years of a guy like Ubaldo. It's a deep draft but a majority of the picks in the second half of the first rd and second round are busts. The Twins can start building their rotation instead of getting a likely bust who would be 3-4 years away from contributing if he overcame the odds. Additionally the Twins have a stacked system. They need to start putting an MLB team together where they are adding prospects to a solid team instead of completely counting on prospects for the rebuild.
  8. Let's step back a little bit. If Hughes is offered a 4/40-4/50M deal he will certainly take it over a 2 year deal regardless of when he becomes a FA again. He also will be a lot of more interested in a one year deal so he can re-enter FA again next season. Someone like the National's would give it to him.
  9. For good ones they are. Hughes has a mixed track record but he will be in demand this offseason and if he can get 4-5 yrs then he will absolutely go for it. It is not a reason to be concerned that he thinks he has already peaked.
  10. Gurrerro already signed with the Dodgers. The Twins are reportedly interested in another Cuban SS (Almedys Dias) but he can't sign until February. They are also interested in cuban pitcher Despaigne. I'm a little optimistic that they sign a Cuban but I'm also prepared to be disappointed.
  11. I wouldn't be concerned if he wanted a 4 yr deal. 4-5 year deals are the standard for pitchers. Typically pitchers want the most guaranteed money although sometimes a pitcher wants a ONE year deal so he can get a longer deal the following offseason.
  12. I'm all for signing Hughes. He's a risk but he is a guy that could substantially improve. It's likely that he is at least a solid starter and it doesn't sound like he will get unreasonable money. And getting out of Yankee Stadium should help a lot especially since it seems hard to hit a HR to RF in Target Field. HR/FB% at home is 13% and 7% on the road.
  13. Scouting reports are also relevant. He has a long swing that might have trouble with MLB pitchers. He is an MLB caliber player but it's debatable just how good he might be. I think it's more likely that he's a .250 hitter with a .310-.320 OBP. He will hit some HR's but I don't think he will be all that good.
  14. I was making a joke. Additionally you don't need as big of a velocity difference when you are bringing a 95-100mph fastball. There is very little time to adjust with pitches that fast.
  15. he does have a 10mph difference so i think that is adequate. I think it's also less of a concern when the CU is almost as fast as the rest of the Twins starters' fastballs.
  16. He without a doubt starts in the minors. Just because he is better than several of the MLB starters doesn't mean he should be on the opening day roster. Prospect promotions shouldn't be dictated/rushed because of the MLB roster. These videos match with the rave reviews that Meyer has gotten all season. It just comes down to health and control but he's that potential front of the rotation arm that the Twins are looking for.
  17. I have problems with the 2 main rallying points against the ACA. The first: the tax on medical devices is always brought up. I think that by adding 30-40M people onto insurance the additional sales will pay for these taxes several times over. the second: Mandated healthcare: There seems to be an outcry against mandating that individuals have insurance. I can understand this but at the same time individuals are terrible at their financial planning. As a whole young people won't see a positive return on their coverage but that is the wrong way to look at it. I don't buy collision auto insurance when I buy a new car just because the insurance company requires it and I expect to profit in the long run. I buy it because I cannot afford to total a 20+K new car. The same is true with health insurance. Young people shouldn't need to visit the doctor that often but bad stuff happens. How many young people can afford a 250K operation/treatment following a severe injury? And the gov't is giving people an opt out that is not horribly expensive unless you are really rich. I'm just not buying the main rallying points by the republicans on this one. I naturally align myself with conservatives and don't like big social programs (this is huge) but the republicans are fighting a losing battle on this one and they are going to look silly in hindsight. FWIW - I currently have national health insurance in Taiwan. It's not perfect but it is the correct direction to go.
  18. They are addressing it by adding Stewart, meyer, May, Berrios, Gonsalves and Thorpe in the last 2 yrs to the minors system. Yes, they went the opposite direction by adding Corriea and Pelfrey but they weren't going to teach the other MLB starters to K batters with mediocre stuff. It will take time.
  19. Several Japanese and Cuban players sign contracts that specifically grant them free agency when the initial contract is completed. I have wondered if baseball was going to eliminate this but they can still do it since Guerrero did it on his contract with the Dodgers. I'm still unsure if the posting counts or not towards the luxury tax. I wouldn't be surprised if it was prorated but I don't know.
  20. I don't think Rodon would be cheap if he was falling. Giolito received a large bonus despite being picked late. Right now I'm pulling for Kolek to fall to us but it's going to take 1-2 guys to step up and put themselves solidly into the top 5. I'm still trying to figure out just how much power Turner has. Right now it sounds like his best arguments are that he's really fast and he plays SS. He obviously has more power than a guy like Billy Hamilton (the type of pick I want to avoid). I would be quite happy with a Jacoby Ellsbury (minus the 32 HR season) type of player (at SS). I'm just concerned that if he misses that upside then he's a fairly ordinary hitter and the only redeeming thing is that he's a SS.
  21. This is a nice little shot at the stat geeks. Of course you want somebody up there that wants to drive in the run but Walker has a 4:1 K:BB ratio and that is showing that he is expanding the strike zone quite a bit and not making the pitcher come inside to him. I'm not sure I really want a hitter up there that is swinging at bad pitches or swinging through good pitches to hit. I will take a walk over an out. Like I have said before this kind of plate discipline (4:1 K:BB) does not project well especially for a college player that has played a half+ appy league season and a full low A ball season. The Twins don't need to promote him but as long as he moves slowly he will be discounted on prospect lists (not important to the Twins).
  22. I'm talking about plate discipline and it's not just K rate. BB rate and K:BB rate are other important Harrison does K a little too much for me to really like him but he walks more than twice as often as Walker. In the majors there are even more plate discipline stats to look at. My favorite stat is swing% on ball out of the strike zone (is he looking for his pitch or helping the pitcher out) but that isn't available in the minors.
  23. Usually guys looking for this type of deal want to be on a playoff contender for the extra exposure. Like Edwin Jackson and Dan Haren.
  24. The stats agree with you but 3/42 seems crazy for someone with mediocre stuff and 2 poor seasons. I could live with 2/20ish but not much more. I saw him pitch a few times this season. Early in the season he was throwing his 88mph fastball right down the center the of the plate (the 5.61 ERA). It was sad to watch. Later in the season he was hitting the edges better but I honestly have no idea how he gets 8 K/9. Nobody should be swinging and missing that much at his stuff.
  25. If you aren't paying more than 12M/yr then you aren't getting a good pitcher and the Twins will be shopping in the Correia/Blanton/Saunders neighborhood.
