  1. Rosario and Vargas go yard.
  2. It will be interesting to see how much money they saved with their first pick (Dozier) but if they were also able to sign Manaea, Reed and Denney it would be a very good draft.
  3. Considering how much of a longshot these guys are it is tempting to take all of that money and pile it into one prospect. Especially one that is a late first rd talent. note for others - to make it happen they have to draft a player and sign them way underslot (like 50K). One team did this last for several picks.
  4. 5% of 8.2M is 410k. If the Twins are going to get one of the tough signs then I think they will need to punt their 4th and/or 5th rd picks to do it. I doubt Stewart signs for underslot and I wouldn't be surprised if he snagged a little of the extra 5%. You can make a solid argument that he needs to sign but there is an even better argument that the Twins need to sign him. I would be very surprised if the Twins took any tough to sign picks from here on out. I'm interested in which guy will be this year's Rosario, Walker, Goodrum or Morales though. At this point I don't even care what position they take. I will take anyone that has a shot at working out since 3rd+ rd picks are longshots.
  5. I wish that MN could have retained the North Star rights. I haven't lived in MN since the Wild were formed and I have never embraced them although I'm barely a hockey fan. Those jerseys only look like UND. Too much green and the yellow was a distinguishing feature.
  6. you are mixing up compensatory picks and competitive balance picks. The Yankees get a pick because they lost Soriano and took the risk of offering a 13Mish one year tender to him. In previous years they would have gotten two picks in this situation.
  7. This is going to get messy. I'm not sure how the MLB can suspend this many players with this much money being involved. Their current contracts shouldn't be affected but future contracts definitely could be by missing 50-100 games. I'm also not sure how this can happen without basically going to court or at least some sort of arbiter where the players can defend themselves. This is not what the MLB needed.
  8. Another argument is that Buxton is performing much better than Sano did in the same league (different home park) last year. Or that prospect rankings take more into account than just stats. It is basically splitting hairs at this point though.
  9. It's a good strategy when you have young players that you want to get a lot of AB's for their development. The last thing you want is another young player that is either sitting on the bench every game or stealing AB's from other young players.
  10. I gave Sano the nod this offseason since he had excelled in full season ball while Buxton was only a great scouting report with mixed rk ball success. Buxton has pulled into the lead now but both of these prospects are top 10 overall prospects which is awesome. Will anyone that was ranking Buxton 5th in the Twins org or lower this offseason come forward?
  11. Buxton 4/4 with a 2B/3B and Polanco 4/4 with two 2B's as CR puts up 10 runs in the 4th. There were zero HR's in the 10 run inning.
  12. I think this is the case of small sample size and selective memory since there are only a handful of successful Asian pitchers in the majors. Dice K had arm problems for awhile and later got TJ. Fujikawa (possible Cubs closer) is headed for TJ. Wang (Taiwan) completely shredded his arm but didn't have TJ I don't think. I'm sure there are a lot more examples but they were fringy MLB'ers that are easily forgotten about.
  13. I have no problem with having a 2nd player that can actually play CF on the roster. It really is a non issue imo and Thomas is actually perfect for the role because there isn't even a reason to put him in the lineup and take away AB's from young players that need to be evaluated.
  14. I was talking about something different when I said starting catcher. I meant MiLB starting catcher. Koch has very little chance at being an MLB starting catcher but he is a solid catcher that can help a minor league team. What I consider an organizational catcher is basically a bullpen catcher that ends up playing because someone needs to catch. If you can avoid it then you try not to put multiple affiliates in the position where they are starting these guys and on the surface if Koch was promoted both CR and FM would be starting fairly awful catchers.
  15. At #4 I'm going with Stewart. There is some uncertainty regarding the top 3 and the Astros but a betting man would guess that they go 1, 2, and 3 as expected. At #43 I will randomly throw out a name like Kyle Serrano. He's a reasonable target but he may or may not be there and there could be a half dozen guys that make sense for the Twins when they pick. I think they will try to go with a pitcher if the talent is available but throughout the draft I can see them picking intriguing guys even if they don't need them (Walker last year for example).
  16. It's not important that a prospect is in Rochester instead of New Britain. He's a solid prospect but he isn't coming up this year unless there is a serious injury and he can make the jump from AA if there was a serious injury. Organizational catchers aren't the same as everyday starting catchers. Plus Koch might be oldish but he has pretty limited pro ball experience. A season in Ft Myers isn't a big deal for a guy that is a marginal prospect.
  17. This really isn't an updated list at all. All they did was take out the players that have exceeded their rookie eligibility as far as I see. So basically this is the offseason list (and writeups) minus a few players. I don't have a problem with Mayo's views but outdated lists that appear current is a problem for MLB.com and I usually ignore them.
  18. I agree that we will see several position players move up by midseason but I'm not as sure about Koch or Pinto. I don't know the entire catching depth chart but IIRC it's not very good. Pinto is in AA knocking on the door and I'm not sure Koch is a good enough prospect to mess with the catching depth chart for every level from appy league to Rochester.
  19. Here's why they are doing it. 1. 7.8M 2. 6.7M 3. 5.6M 4. 4.45M They are dropping Moran's name a lot in the hopes that it shows they are serious about taking him and getting Gray to drop his asking price to 6.7M or lower since it's very easy for Gray to drop down to the #3 or #4 if the Astros pass on him. If Gray drops his asking price by 1+M then I think he's the Astros pick. I don't think Appel will deal and Boras also represents Bryant.
  20. The scholarship is basically a non-factor. He wouldn't be going to A&M to be a college student. He would be going to A&M to be the starting quarterback with a shot at the NFL. I don't think the new commit matters that much though because Stewart would be a year ahead of him and it isn't a firm commitment.
  21. lol - it's not non-existent because we had these other HS pitchers that weren't very good so that means that a legitimately good prospect will also move slowly? Again I'm not saying that Berrios will move quickly. I'm saying that this is a weak analysis that was used recently with several young hitters recently based on hitters that didn't deserve promotions. People are even making the same argument with regards to Stewart. There are some that have argued against drafting him simply because it will take 4+ years for him to help the Twins. That's always possible with a HS prospect but the Twins wouldn't be conservative with him because they promoted Rainville, Waldrop or Boyd slowly.
  22. My only criticism of the Twins draft last year is that they started picking RP'ers one pick too soon. If you change Bard at #42 to a HS pitcher or toolsy hitter it would have been even better. I actually don't have a problem loading up with some power relief arms in the 60+ area of the draft. Duffey and Jones (1SP and 1 RP) are doing alright. But the draft is a huge success based on the frontliners (Buxton and Berrios) and Walker and Baxendale were nice steals late. This draft could be an overwhelming success if everyone of those RP'ers are complete busts but hopefully one of them become a 7th/8th/9th inning guy for the Twins.
  23. If you read more carefully you will notice that I haven't actually lobbied for his promotion nor have I even thought he is going fly through the system. I just asked for you to do a little more analysis than 'the Twins promote HS pitchers slowly' which is based on a non-existent track record.
  24. The draft is setup to help the worst teams as it is. The Twins are getting the #4 pick in each rd and they are getting substantially higher int'l FA bonus money. These extra picks are for permanently low revenue teams (market share) and fluctuating low yearly revenue teams. The benefit of getting a high pick is significantly better than either of these bonuses.
  25. Is it possible to store their business related stuff in Dropbox or something? Or to remotely access their home computer? Dropbox is really easy to setup but I know very little about remote access on computers.
