  1. It's not collusion. BB greatly overrates prospects and he's hell bent on gutting his team. The strange thing is that he's selling off players in their prime. I go with the opposite philosophy and collect 30 somethings for peanuts. I think there is actually a chance that Stras wrecks his arm within 3 yrs so I can understand trading him but he didn't get much in return and I would definitely prefer McCutchen. The funny thing is that Zunino isn't actually all that good. He doesn't have an elite bat and probably fits into the .280 15+ HR tier of catchers.
  2. So far I think this is top team. I'm competitive but Stras and Moore have not been great.
  3. Colabello with another HR (14). .369/.431/.664/1.094 This is such a great story and I wish there was a logical way for him to get some PT on the Twins but there isn't much room for a 1B/DH or even an OF'er.
  4. I think the fascination is that he's better than Butera. Herrmann is alright as that backup everything guy but he does hit like a catcher.
  5. We are doing all of this so we can swap Dozier for Romero? This really doesn't make sense at all. Maybe if it was swapping Dozier for Sano in a year but there is practically zero benefit to get Romero into the lineup. Additionally Plouffe seems to have all the wrong skills to play 2B. I don't get to see many Twins games in Taiwan but his agility seems to be below average. That's going to be further exposed turning double plays. His arm is strong but he has an accuracy problem. At 3B he can usually step and throw towards his target but at he will have to catch, turn and avoid baserunners on double plays. He will also have to take a little off of his throws or else the 1B man will have to handle rockets and taking a little off can create more accuracy problems. I think Plouffe slides an OF spot in a year or two as a tolerable starter (placeholder) until something better comes along. I don't think 2B is in his future at all unless it's as a once/week fill-in.
  6. I'm disappointed at how poorly they did in FA and wanted the Twins to sign the best pitcher that 3/35 could have bought. Instead they got Correia and Pelfrey. Pelfrey has been awful but Correia is producing on par with almost everyone that signed in the 10-50M range and some of those pitchers have been dreadfully awful. They could have spent more but the product on the field wouldn't have been much better unless they spent way more. But I am against 5-6 yr megacontracts at this stage. I will be hoping for a big contract like that when the team is clearly on the ascent. Part of a rebuilding team is getting young players that might be part of your future playing time. People seem to be completely missing the point of rebuilding. Signing more veterans means less opportunity to see if Dozier/Escobar/florimon/Plouffe are capable IF'ers. One of those guys is probably better than a reasonable FA target that would be on a 1-2 yr contract and gone or declining. The Twins also have the opportunity to get Hicks/Arcia/Parmelee AB's. For Parmelee it's almost his last chance to show that he is an MLB'er.
  7. C - Mauer 1B - Davis 2B - Cano - if you are playing to win then you take Cano because he's better than kendrick (Pedroia could be argued though) 3B - MCab SS - Hardy - not a lot of options - solid bat and great defense OF - Trout OF - Crisp - he's just having a great season OF - Bautista - this spot is up for grabs with about 5 guys DH - Ortiz SP - Verlander
  8. The reason that RBI to opportunity is nearly identical despite Mauer being the better hitter with RISP is that Morneau hit a lot more HR's and gets an RBI for hitting himself in. But really RBI's are meaningless. A hitter on the Yankees will get more RBI's. A cleanup hitter will have more RBI's than a #2 hitter.
  9. Spending that money now means that you won't have much to spend when the pieces are falling into place. that should be obvious. Your Royals argument is worthless. They have been the most incompetent org in baseball for 2 decades (along with the Pirates). But it's cool if you want to dismiss rebuilding the right way because of 2 inept orgs.
  10. I think you need to do a little reading about food sensitivities and intolerances. If someone is sensitive (as Justin claims) to certain foods then it can benefit them a lot to eliminate them from their diet. This is actually one additional explanation for his issues the last several years.
  11. You don't shop in that range when you are a 100 loss team. I think they should shop in that range when they start putting the pieces into place to contend. Why? Typically the last 1-2 years of a big FA contract like that are when the FA pitcher has declined considerably. Rather inconveniently those years would be lining up just as this prospect core was getting established. I think it's much better to wait and have that level of pitcher when the young core is getting established.
  12. Broxton went from elite closer to garbage pretty quickly. It shouldn't be a surprise that the Royals didn't get much for him based on half of a good season.
  13. Last year everyone complained that the Twins took a bunch of RP'ers. That's how they got the velocity. This year people are complaining that they took starters. Every pitcher is going to have flaws especially once you get past the first rd in a weak draft. Eades (2nd) and Gonsalves (4th) are decent picks so I'm not sure why criticism is warranted.
  14. Span was on the trading block because he was the type of asset that could bring in a very good starting pitching prospect. People can say that the Twins should have Morneau, Doumit and other guys on the trading block but those guys bring in marginal prospects. If you want to add good prospects then you have to give up good players or draft them.
  15. Nobody is saying that you force a deal for Perkins but this team needs good starting pitching and a 30 yr old closer is a luxury for this team. I would love to keep Perkins but this is one of the best ways to add good starting pitching to the team. The Twins could certainly do better in FA but it's difficult to add good pitchers in FA unless you are shopping in the Greinke/Sanchez neighborhood. Many of the FA pitchers that so many argued for this past offseason have been borderline (or completely) awful this year.
  16. I think we have been saying this for the last two seasons. At some point we might have to accept that this is the Morneau that you are going to get.
  17. Plouffe is very relevant since Sano may or may not make it at 3B. In addition Plouffe is versatile enough that he could move to almost every position on the field. Hopefully he avoids the up the middle positions though. For a team with as many question marks as the Twins that is a player that you want to keep since he's cheap.
  18. Right now they need starters more than anything. You have to give something to get something and Perkins is the best trade chip to add another really good arm in the minors. I would also put Willingham on the block. After that the rest of Twins have very little trade value.
  19. Clete Thomas is just organizational depth. He doesn't deserve to be part of the playing rotation other than the fact that he is the only player capable of playing CF on a daily basis. He will play until Hicks comes back and then he can rarely play as the 4th OF'er until Mastro is back. The Twins do have one too many players in the RF/LF/DH/1B rotation but that's not the end of the world.
  20. In unrelated news I watched The Real Deal record the final out of a game on TV last night. This was in Taiwan's 4 team pro league but we have Manny.
  21. Stewart Meyer Gibson Berrios May is in an entirely different tier for me and I might even consider ranking another pitcher ahead of him. This also isn't underrating Gibson and Berrios. I think both of them are easily top 100 overall prospects but Meyer and Stewart are top 50 (approaching top 25) prospects. The Twins might not have the pitching depth in the minors but four pitchers in the overall top 100 is a claim that not many teams can make.
  22. Gibson is underrated but I will take Meyer and Stewart above him. I would also bump Stewart into the #3 spot.
  23. And that happened in a year when MLB payroll dropped from the previous season.
